# USPS Ground Advantage Cubic rates and how the tiers work

**Ground Advantage Cubic prices a package by its size and zone, not its weight: $7.85 for the smallest tier (0.10 cubic foot) to $27.35 for the largest (1.00), at commercial (label-service) prices only.** Any package up to 20 lb qualifies if it measures 1 cubic foot or less and no more than 22 in. on its longest side. To find the tier, round each side down to the nearest 1/4 in., multiply and divide by 1,728 ([DMM 283.1.3](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/283.htm)).

**Temporary holiday prices.** These include USPS's holiday add-on, from 12 a.m. CT Oct 4, 2026 to 12 a.m. CT Jan 17, 2027, on top of the 8% time-limited increase since Apr 26, 2026. [Prices before Oct 4](https://resellerindex.com/rates/ground-advantage-cubic/#holiday-h)

Zone 9 (Palau, Micronesia and the Marshall Islands) costs the same as Zone 8 in every tier.

## How the tiers work: measuring a box

1. Measure length, width and height at each side's longest point.
2. Round each one **down** to the nearest 1/4 inch: USPS's example is 6-1/8 x 5-7/8 x 6-3/8 in., which becomes 6 x 5-3/4 x 6-1/4 in. ([DMM 283.1.3.3](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/283.htm)).
3. Multiply and divide by 1,728. That example is 215.6 cubic inches, or 0.125 cubic foot: over 0.10, so tier 0.20.
4. Check the limits: 20 lb, 1 cubic foot, 22 in. on the longest side, no rolls or tubes ([DMM 283.1.3.1](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/283.htm)). Who qualifies and how to pay: [USPS cubic eligibility](https://resellerindex.com/usps/rules/cubic-eligibility/).

*Worked examples, computed with DMM 283.1.3.3. Prices: Notice 123 effective Oct 4, 2026, Zone 4.*

| Box | Rounded down | Cubic feet | Tier | Zone 4 |
| --- | --- | ---: | --- | ---: |
| 6-1/8 x 5-7/8 x 6-3/8 in. (the DMM's own example) | 6 x 5-3/4 x 6-1/4 in. | 0.125 | 0.20 | $8.74 |
| 9 x 6 x 3 in. (a small parts box) | 9 x 6 x 3 in. | 0.094 | 0.10 | $8.39 |
| 12 x 10 x 8 in. (a common shipping box) | 12 x 10 x 8 in. | 0.556 | 0.60 | $12.08 |
| 12-1/8 x 12-1/8 x 12-1/8 in. (just over a 12 in. cube) | 12 x 12 x 12 in. | 1.000 | 1.00 | $15.59 |

**Rounding down works in your favor at the top tier:** a box 12-1/8 x 12-1/8 x 12-1/8 in. rounds to 12 x 12 x 12, exactly 1.000 cubic foot, so it still gets tier 1.00. [But a 1/4 inch more](https://resellerindex.com/rates/ground-advantage-cubic/#too-big) takes it over 1 cubic foot and out of cubic.

## Poly mailers and padded envelopes

Soft packs are measured by the length plus width of the original mailer's outside dimensions, each rounded down to the 1/4 inch, and the total can't pass 36 in. ([DMM 283.1.3.4](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/283.htm)). Only five tiers apply, so a soft pack never prices above 0.50. Expandable or pleated mailers are measured like boxes. USPS set these soft-pack tiers on Jul 12, 2026 ([tracker entry](https://resellerindex.com/changes/usps/2026-07-12-usps-ground-advantage-cubic-soft-packs/)).

*Soft-pack tiers (DMM 283.1.3.4, Exhibit 1.3.4) and examples. Prices: Notice 123 effective Oct 4, 2026.*

| Length plus width | Tier | Zone 1 | Zone 4 | Zone 8 |
| --- | --- | ---: | ---: | ---: |
| up to 21 in. | 0.10 | $7.85 | $8.39 | $10.68 |
| over 21 up to 27 in. | 0.20 | $8.22 | $8.74 | $12.39 |
| over 27 up to 31 in. | 0.30 | $8.79 | $9.63 | $15.22 |
| over 31 up to 34 in. | 0.40 | $9.72 | $10.99 | $18.34 |
| over 34 up to 36 in. | 0.50 | $10.24 | $11.58 | $19.95 |

- A 9 x 12 in. mailer: 21 in., tier 0.10, $8.39 to Zone 4.
- A 14-1/2 x 19 in. mailer: 33-1/2 in., tier 0.40, $10.99 to Zone 4.
- A 15 x 22 in. mailer: 37 in., over the 36 in. limit, so no cubic price.

## What changed on Jul 12, 2026, and what didn't

A guide that gives an 18 in. limit or 10 poly-mailer tiers predates these changes. Compare the current [DMM 283](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/283.htm) and [223](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/223.htm) with the Apr 6, 2026 editions in USPS's archive ([283](https://pe.usps.com/Archive/NHTML/DMMArchive20260406/283.htm), [223](https://pe.usps.com/Archive/NHTML/DMMArchive20260406/223.htm)):

*USPS cubic rules before and since Jul 12, 2026, from the Domestic Mail Manual (sections 283.1.3, 283.1.4, 223.1.3, 223.1.4.2 and 123.1.3).*

| Rule | Until Jul 11, 2026 | Since Jul 12, 2026 |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Longest side, Ground Advantage and Priority Mail Cubic | 18 in. | 22 in. |
| Ground Advantage soft-pack tiers (length plus width) | 10 tiers: up to 16 in. was 0.10, then 21, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 35 and 36 in. | 5 tiers: 21, 27, 31, 34 and 36 in. (the same as Priority Mail Cubic's) |
| Ground Advantage box tiers | 10, up to 1 cubic foot | 10, up to 1 cubic foot (unchanged) |
| Priority Mail Cubic size limit | 18 in. longest side, 0.5 cubic foot | 22 in., 0.5 cubic foot |
| Dimensional weight when a box is over 1 cubic foot | sides rounded to the nearest inch, divided by 166 | sides rounded up, divided by 139 |

*The same poly mailer under the old and new soft-pack tiers, both priced on today's Notice 123 (Zone 4), so the difference is the tier alone.*

| Mailer | Length plus width | Tier until Jul 11, 2026 | Tier now | Zone 4, old tier / new tier |
| --- | ---: | --- | --- | ---: |
| 9 x 12 in. | 21 in. | 0.20 | 0.10 | $8.74 / $8.39 |
| 10 x 13 in. | 23 in. | 0.30 | 0.20 | $9.63 / $8.74 |
| 12 x 15-1/2 in. | 27-1/2 in. | 0.50 | 0.30 | $11.58 / $9.63 |
| 14-1/2 x 17-1/2 in. | 32 in. | 0.70 | 0.40 | $12.47 / $10.99 |
| 18 x 18 in. | 36 in. | 1.00 | 0.50 | $15.59 / $11.58 |
| 14-1/2 x 19 in. | 33-1/2 in. | none (side over 18 in.) | 0.40 | - / $10.99 |

Boxes didn't lose tiers 0.60 to 1.00: [DMM 283.1.3.2](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/283.htm) still lists 10, and Notice 123 still prices them. The 0.5 cubic foot cap belongs to Priority Mail Cubic ([DMM 223.1.3.1](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/223.htm)).

## Find your tier

Type the outside dimensions; the tier and price follow the DMM rules above. Leave height empty for a poly mailer.

A 12 x 10 x 8 in. box is 0.556 cubic foot, tier 0.60: $12.08 to Zone 4.

## When cubic beats paying by weight

Each cell is the weight above which the cubic tier costs less than an online Ground Advantage label by weight, up to the 20 lb cubic limit. It comes out the same in every zone, so the rule of thumb is simple: tier 0.10 wins for packages from 1 lb, tier 0.20 over 1 lb and tier 0.30 over 2 lb, and so on up to tier 1.00, over 10 lb. A dense item gains the most: 10 lb in a 9 x 9 x 6 in. box (0.281 cubic foot, tier 0.30) costs $9.63 to Zone 4 cubic, against $15.09 by weight, $13.08 by Priority Mail Cubic and $22.02 in a Medium Flat Rate Box. Under 1 lb, cubic never wins: Notice 123 lists one online Ground Advantage price per zone for 4, 8, 12 and 15.999 oz ($7.33 to $8.95), below tier 0.10 everywhere.

*Online (commercial) prices, Notice 123 effective Oct 4, 2026: cubic tier vs Ground Advantage by weight. "over 4 lb" means a package heavier than 4 lb.*

## Ground Advantage Cubic vs Priority Mail Cubic

Priority Mail Cubic uses the same measuring rules and soft-pack tiers but stops at 0.50 cubic foot ([DMM 223.1.3](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/223.htm)). At the same tier it costs $1.06 to $14.05 more in Zones 1-8, and much more to Zone 9, where Ground Advantage keeps the Zone 8 price. You'd pay it for speed: USPS's Priority Mail objective is 2 to 3 days, not guaranteed ([DMM 123.2.1](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/123.htm)). ## Holiday prices until Jan 17, 2027

USPS adds $0.40 to tiers 0.10-0.30, $0.65 to tiers 0.40-0.90 and $1.05 to tier 1.00 in Zones 1-4, and $0.55, $1.05 and $1.75 in Zones 5-9, from 12 a.m. CT Oct 4, 2026 to 12 a.m. CT Jan 17, 2027 ([USPS, Aug 25, 2026](https://about.usps.com/newsroom/national-releases/2026/0825-usps-announces-temporary-price-change-for-2026-holiday-shipping-season.htm)). Today's price minus the add-on is the Jul 12, 2026 price below. As of Oct 19, 2026, USPS hadn't published the cubic prices that apply from Jan 17, 2027, so we don't show a forecast.

## Questions

### What are the Ground Advantage Cubic tiers?

Ten, by cubic feet: 0.10 (up to 0.10), then 0.20 (over 0.10 up to 0.20) and so on to 1.00 ([DMM 283.1.3.2](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/283.htm)). Prices run from $7.85 (0.10, Zone 1) to $27.35 (1.00, Zone 8), and Zone 9 costs the same as Zone 8 in every tier ([Notice 123](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/Notice123.htm)).

### How do I work out my cubic tier?

Measure length, width and height at their longest points, round each down to the nearest 1/4 inch, multiply and divide by 1,728 ([DMM 283.1.3.3](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/283.htm)). USPS's example: 6-1/8 x 5-7/8 x 6-3/8 in. rounds to 6 x 5-3/4 x 6-1/4 in., 215.6 cubic inches, 0.125 cubic foot, so tier 0.20. Poly mailers and padded envelopes use length plus width instead.

### What is the maximum weight and size for cubic?

20 lb, 1 cubic foot and 22 inches on the longest side, and no rolls or tubes ([DMM 283.1.3.1](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/283.htm)). A poly mailer's length plus width can't exceed 36 in. ([DMM 283.1.3.4](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/283.htm)).

### Did Ground Advantage Cubic boxes lose tiers 0.60 to 1.00 in July 2026?

No. On Jul 12, 2026 USPS cut soft packs (poly mailers and padded envelopes) to five tiers and raised the longest side from 18 to 22 inches, but boxes still have 10 tiers up to 1 cubic foot ([DMM 283.1.3.2](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/283.htm); before: [DMM archive, Apr 6, 2026](https://pe.usps.com/Archive/NHTML/DMMArchive20260406/283.htm)). The 0.5 cubic foot cap is Priority Mail Cubic's ([DMM 223.1.3.1](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/223.htm)).

### What cubic tier is a poly mailer?

Add length and width, each rounded down to the 1/4 inch: up to 21 in. is tier 0.10, over 21 up to 27 in. is 0.20, over 27 up to 31 in. is 0.30, over 31 up to 34 in. is 0.40 and over 34 up to 36 in. is 0.50 ([DMM 283.1.3.4](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/283.htm)). So a soft pack never prices above tier 0.50. A pleated or expandable mailer is measured like a box.

### Is cubic cheaper than paying by weight?

Once the package is heavy for its size. Each tier costs less than an online by-weight label above a set weight, the same in every zone: 0.10 from 1 lb, 0.20 over 1 lb, 0.30 over 2 lb, 0.40 over 3 lb, 0.50 over 4 lb, 0.60 over 5 lb, 0.70 over 6 lb, 0.80 over 7 lb, 0.90 over 8 lb and 1.00 over 10 lb ([Notice 123](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/Notice123.htm)). Lighter than that, pay by weight.

### What if my box is a little over 1 cubic foot?

It loses cubic prices and pays by weight, and over 1 cubic foot by-weight prices use dimensional weight with each side rounded up ([DMM 283.1.4](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/283.htm)). A 12-1/4 x 12 x 12 in. box is 1.021 cubic foot, so a 6 lb item in it bills as 14 lb: $18.18 online to Zone 4, against $15.59 for tier 1.00. Trim it to 12 in. and it fits tier 1.00.

### Can I get cubic prices at the Post Office?

No. Notice 123 prints cubic prices only in its commercial sections, for Ground Advantage and Priority Mail ([Notice 123](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/Notice123.htm)), and retail Ground Advantage is priced "Based on weight and zone" ([DMM 133.1.2](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/133.htm)). Commercial prices come through PC Postage, IBI postage meters, permit imprint and USPS Returns ([DMM 283.1.2](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/283.htm)); check that your label service offers cubic.

### Do cubic packages pay oversize fees?

Not the length or volume fees: those start over 22 in. and over 2 cubic feet, past the cubic limits, and Notice 123's notes under cubic list neither. They do list a $4.50 fee for nonstandard characteristics (a can, a wooden or metal box, some liquids), a $0.25 "Package Quality Noncompliance Fee or Unmanifested Fee" per piece, $7.50 per piece for live animals and perishables, and a hazmat handling fee of $0.00 (Priority Mail Cubic's is $7.50) ([Notice 123](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/Notice123.htm)).

### Do cubic prices go down after Jan 17, 2027?

The holiday add-on ends at 12 a.m. CT Jan 17, 2027 ([USPS, Aug 25, 2026](https://about.usps.com/newsroom/national-releases/2026/0825-usps-announces-temporary-price-change-for-2026-holiday-shipping-season.htm)), along with the 8% time-limited increase from Apr 26, 2026 ([USPS, Mar 25, 2026](https://about.usps.com/newsroom/national-releases/2026/0325-usps-announces-transportation-related-time-limited-price-change.pdf)). As of Oct 19, 2026, USPS hadn't published the cubic prices that apply from Jan 17, 2027, so we don't show a forecast.

## How we built this

The cubic prices are from the current [Notice 123](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/Notice123.htm), read on Oct 19, 2026, and match USPS's [price change file](https://pe.usps.com/resources/PriceChange/Time-Limited%20OCT%202026%20Price%20Change%20-%20Notice%20123%20-%20Final.zip); each equals the Jul 12, 2026 price plus the add-on USPS announced. The rules are quoted from [DMM 283](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/283.htm) as published that day. Comparisons use USPS's published commercial prices; label services can charge their own.
