# What it costs to sell and ship a camera or lens

On a $700 camera, eBay takes $95.60, Mercari $70.00, Poshmark $140.00, Whatnot $76.60 and TikTok Shop $42.00, before shipping. A used camera with its lithium battery has to travel by ground: a 2 lb boxed body costs $8.39 to $13.42 by Ground Advantage at USPS commercial prices (Zones 1-8), the box needs “Restricted Electronic Device” and “Surface Transportation Only” marks, and insuring $700 adds $10.55.

Below: fees at $50, $250, $700 and $1,800, postage, insurance, what Publication 52 requires for camera batteries and spares, and lens-only shipments.

Rates verified on Oct 14, 2026

## Selling fees on a $50, $250, $700 and $1,800 camera

What each platform takes and what's left of the sale price, computed with the same code as our [fee calculators](https://resellerindex.com/calculators/). Fee pages checked Oct 14, 2026.

*What you keep before shipping costs: sale price minus platform fees, no shipping charged, no sales tax. In brackets: the fees. § Whatnot and Etsy: rates from their own fee pages as checked Oct 14, 2026, not re-checked since (see the note below the tables).*

| Platform | $50 | $250 | $700 | $1,800 |

### If the buyer pays $8.91 shipping

Here the buyer pays the commercial Ground Advantage price for 2 lb to Zone 4 and all of it goes on the label. eBay, Mercari, Etsy, Amazon and TikTok Shop take their percentage from buyer-paid shipping too, and Whatnot's and Depop's processing fees cover it; Poshmark buyers pay Poshmark's own label instead.

*What you keep with buyer-paid shipping of $8.91 spent on the label. In brackets: the platform's extra fee because of the shipping charge, and for Poshmark any label upgrade you pay. One USPS price is used for every platform so the fees compare like for like. No sales tax.*

| Platform | $50 | $250 | $700 | $1,800 |
| --- | ---: | ---: | ---: | ---: |
| eBay | $41.59 ($1.21) | $214.39 ($1.21) | $603.19 ($1.21) | $1,553.59 ($1.21) |
| Mercari | $44.11 ($0.89) | $224.11 ($0.89) | $629.11 ($0.89) | $1,619.11 ($0.89) |

| Whatnot§ | $43.99 ($0.26) | $222.19 ($0.26) | $623.14 ($0.26) | $1,603.24 ($0.26) |
| TikTok Shop | $46.47 ($0.53) | $234.47 ($0.53) | $657.47 ($0.53) | $1,691.47 ($0.53) |
| Etsy (vintage only)§ | $43.95 ($0.85) | $224.95 ($0.85) | $632.20 ($0.85) | $1,627.70 ($0.85) |

- **$50:** with buyer-paid shipping, TikTok Shop leaves $46.47 and Poshmark $40.00, a gap of $6.47.
- **$250:** with buyer-paid shipping, TikTok Shop leaves $234.47 and Poshmark $200.00, a gap of $34.47.
- **$700:** with buyer-paid shipping, TikTok Shop leaves $657.47 and Poshmark $560.00, a gap of $97.47.
- **$1,800:** with buyer-paid shipping, TikTok Shop leaves $1,691.47 and Poshmark $1,440.00, a gap of $251.47.

- **eBay:** Cameras & Photo isn't one of the categories eBay's fee page lists with its own rate ([eBay fee page](https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/fees-credits-invoices/selling-fees?id=4822)).
- **Poshmark:** Poshmark sells electronics, but Posh Authenticate excludes them ([Poshmark](https://poshmark.com/posh_authenticate)).
- **TikTok Shop:** TikTok Shop lists Phones & Electronics > Cameras & Photography at 6% ([TikTok Shop Academy](https://seller-us.tiktok.com/university/essay?knowledge_id=5988482086864682&lang=en)).
- Etsy: “Reselling is not allowed on Etsy except for the following items that are handpicked or sourced by sellers” ([Etsy, as checked Oct 14, 2026](https://help.etsy.com/hc/en-us/articles/23948763872151-Does-Etsy-Allow-Drop-Shipping-or-Reselling)), and vintage means “handpicked items that are over 20 years old”. A camera made in the last 20 years can't be resold there, so the Etsy row applies to vintage pieces only.
- Amazon isn't in the table: this site tracks Amazon's media fees only. Amazon's pricing page lists Consumer Electronics at 8% with a $0.30 minimum [(Amazon, saved copy Oct 14, 2026)](https://sell.amazon.com/pricing), and “A product's fee category may not be the same as the category that appears to customers in the Amazon store”. Whether a used camera can be listed there depends on Amazon's own condition and category rules, which this page doesn't cover.
- Amazon's pricing page also says “Bundles containing both a camera device and accessory products are classified under the Electronics Accessories category” ([Amazon](https://sell.amazon.com/pricing)).
- eBay's rate for each category it lists separately, with worked examples: [eBay fees by category](https://resellerindex.com/guides/ebay-fees-by-category/).
- eBay also charges its percentage on sales tax, which the tables leave out: [eBay fees on sales tax](https://resellerindex.com/guides/ebay-fees-on-sales-tax/).
- Whatnot's commission falls at higher four-week sales tiers; the tables use the standard tier, 8% in every category except Coins (Whatnot's fee page as checked Oct 14, 2026).
- § Whatnot and Etsy: the rates, and the Whatnot and Etsy rules quoted on this page, are from each platform's own help pages as checked Oct 14, 2026. Those help centers block automated checks, so we couldn't re-check them for this update; confirm on the platform before you price around them. Etsy, Inc.'s annual report for 2025 gives the same $0.20 listing fee and 6.5% transaction fee on item plus shipping ([Form 10-K, filed Feb 19, 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1370637/000137063726000019/etsy-20251231.htm)).

## Shipping a camera or lens: USPS prices by weight

Media Mail is limited by what's inside, not by size: “Only these items may be mailed at the Media Mail prices” ([DMM 173.4.1](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/173.htm)). The list is books, 16 mm films, printed music, test materials, sound and video recordings, playscripts and manuscripts, printed educational charts, medical loose-leaf pages and computer-readable media. Anything else pays parcel prices, and “If you try to include anything that's not allowed, you (or your recipient) will have to pay higher postage rates” ([USPS](https://www.usps.com/ship/mail-shipping-services.htm)). USPS can check: “the mailing of articles at Media Mail or Library Mail prices constitutes consent by the mailer to postal inspection of the contents” ([DMM 173.2.2](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/173.htm)).

That leaves USPS Ground Advantage as the tracked option: packages up to 70 lb, with USPS Tracking and up to $100 of insurance included ([USPS](https://www.usps.com/ship/mail-shipping-services.htm)).

Cameras and lenses aren't on that list.

*USPS Notice 123 effective Oct 4, 2026. Each weight is "not over". Commercial prices are USPS's published prices for labels bought online; retail is the Post Office counter. Ground Advantage prices include USPS's temporary holiday add-on until Jan 17, 2027; Media Mail has none. Weights are examples: weigh your packed item.*

## Platform labels

A label bought through a selling platform follows that platform's price list. These are the label prices on our [change tracker](https://resellerindex.com/changes/) for the platforms above, from each platform's own page; each note says when that page was checked if it wasn't re-checked for this update.

- **Whatnot.** Since Jul 31, 2026, Whatnot's default label is Ground Advantage: $4.47 under 4 oz, $4.85 under 8 oz, $5.25 under 12 oz, $6.75 under 16 oz, and $7.75 for 1-5 lb at any distance (Whatnot's help page as checked Oct 14, 2026; [tracker entry](https://resellerindex.com/changes/whatnot/2026-07-31-whatnot-ground-advantage-default/)). Over that, Whatnot says “Packages over 5 lbs use zone-based Ground Advantage commercial pricing” ([Whatnot, as checked Oct 14, 2026](https://help.whatnot.com/hc/en-us/articles/46768886074765-USPS-shipping-updates-on-Whatnot-as-of-July-31)), and it warns: “Using Priority Mail or Flat Rate packaging with Ground Advantage labels may result in returned packages and USPS fees of approximately $20 per package”. Buyers usually pay Whatnot shipping.
- **Mercari.** Since Oct 19, 2026, Best-rate Ground Advantage labels cost $7.99 at 1 lb (was $7.48) and $13.99 at 3 lb (was $12.83). Packages over 1 cu ft or longer than 22 in. pay Standard rates: 1 lb goes from $7.59 to $8.99 ([tracker entry](https://resellerindex.com/changes/mercari/2026-10-19-mercari-label-rates-up/)).
- **Poshmark.** Buyers pay for Poshmark's standard label, which covers packages up to 5 lb. Heavier packages need an upgrade that you pay: $5.00 for 5.01-10 lb and $10.00 for 10.01-15 lb. From Oct 26, 2026, Poshmark deducts the upgrade even if you ship on the standard label ([Poshmark](https://blog.poshmark.com/2026/10/08/shipping-heavier-items-how-label-upgrades-work/); [tracker entry](https://resellerindex.com/changes/poshmark/2026-10-26-poshmark-overweight-label-deductions/)).
- **eBay Labels** and other label services use their own prices; this page uses USPS's published prices so every platform is compared on the same postage.

## Insurance and signature on a camera or lens

“Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, and USPS Ground Advantage include $100.00 of insurance coverage” ([DMM 503, Exhibit 1.4.1](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/503.htm)); Media Mail isn't on that list and includes none. Beyond that, “additional insurance may be purchased for no more than a maximum coverage of $5,000.00” ([DMM 503.4.2](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/503.htm)), and “Insurance coverage only covers the actual value of mail contents” ([USPS](https://www.usps.com/ship/insurance-extra-services.htm)). “Insurance fees are based on the item's declared value” ([USPS](https://www.usps.com/ship/insurance-extra-services.htm)). “An item insured for more than $500.00 receives a delivery scan ... and USPS provides a signature as the delivery record to the mailer electronically” ([DMM 503.4.3.1](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/503.htm)). Under that, Signature Confirmation costs $4.15 online or $5.15 at the counter ([Notice 123](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/Notice123.htm)).

*USPS insurance fees for insuring the full sale price, Notice 123 effective Oct 4, 2026 (fee for the coverage amount; $2.80 for up to $50, then by band; $9.05 plus $1.50 per $100 over $600). Registered Mail is a separate service that includes insurance up to $50,000.*

| Declared value | Ground Advantage insurance fee | Registered Mail fee | Delivery signature |
| --- | ---: | ---: | --- |
| $50 | included (up to $100) | $21.50 | Signature Confirmation, $4.15 online |
| $250 | $4.55 | $25.00 | Signature Confirmation, $4.15 online |
| $700 | $10.55 | $28.10 | included with insurance over $500 |
| $1,800 | $27.05 | $31.20 | included with insurance over $500 |

- Insured for more than $500, the buyer “may be required to show an acceptable primary ID before USPS will deliver the mailpiece” ([USPS](https://www.usps.com/ship/insurance-extra-services.htm)).
- Etsy: for cases opened from May 7, 2026, Purchase Protection pays up to $250 of an eligible order's refund and the seller is charged the rest; Etsy suggests shipping insurance for orders over $250 (Etsy's help page as checked Oct 14, 2026; [tracker entry](https://resellerindex.com/changes/etsy/2026-05-07-etsy-purchase-protection-250-cap/)).
- With batteries in the box, USPS says “combining multiple extra services (e.g., signature confirmation and insurance less than or equal to $500) is prohibited when mailing hazardous materials” ([Publication 52, 323.2](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_004.htm)).

## Batteries: what USPS Publication 52 requires

### Two kinds of camera battery

Pub 52 separates rechargeable lithium-ion batteries from non-rechargeable lithium metal ones, which it says are “often used in consumer products such as cameras and flashlights” ([Publication 52, 349.2](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_028.htm)). Lithium metal: “Each cell must not exceed more than 1.0 gram of lithium” ([Publication 52, 349.231](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_028.htm)), and “Each battery must not exceed more than 2.0 grams of lithium content” ([349.231](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_028.htm)). Installed in the camera, a cell over 0.3 g of lithium brings two more limits: “Each mailpiece may contain a maximum of eight cells or two batteries”, and “no mailpiece may exceed 5 kilograms (11 pounds)” ([349.232](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_028.htm)); at 0.3 g or less there's no count limit and the package stays at 5.5 lb or less. Lithium-ion: “Cells must not exceed a 20 Wh rating” ([Publication 52, 349.241](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_028.htm)), “Batteries must not exceed a 100 Wh rating”, and “Each battery must display the "Watt-hour" or "Wh" marking” ([349.241](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_028.htm)); installed, “Each mailpiece must contain no more than eight cells or two batteries” ([Publication 52, 349.242](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_028.htm)).

### A used camera goes by ground

Pub 52 treats a device as used when it “Is not new in original packaging; Is not manufacturer-certified new or refurbished; and/or Has some form of damage or defect” ([349.21(e)](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_028.htm)), and “Used, damaged, or defective electronic devices are prohibited from air transportation” ([Publication 52, 349 (Domestic Lithium Battery Mailability)](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_028.htm)). USPS's summary: “if the items are used, they can only be sent via ground transport (can't go on planes)” ([USPS](https://www.usps.com/ship/packages.htm)). A used camera with its battery goes by Ground Advantage, and the package “must be marked with "Restricted Electronic Device" and "Surface Transportation Only" on the address side of the mailpiece” ([Publication 52, 349.221(e)](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_028.htm)).

### Spare batteries and batteries sold alone

Installed batteries in small numbers need no lithium mark: “Mailpieces containing button-cell batteries installed in equipment (including circuit boards) or no more than four lithium cells or two lithium batteries installed in the equipment they operate are excepted” ([Publication 52, 349.221(d)](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_028.htm)). A spare packed loose in the same box changes that. For a lithium-ion spare, “Mailpieces must display a DOT-approved lithium battery mark ... indicating UN3481, on the address side” ([Publication 52, 349.243](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_028.htm)); for a lithium metal one, “Mailpieces must display a DOT-approved lithium battery mark ... indicating UN3091, on the address side” ([Publication 52, 349.233(d)](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_028.htm)), and “The package cannot exceed the quantity of batteries required to operate the device” ([Publication 52, 349.233](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_028.htm)), so one spare set, not a bag of extras. A lithium-ion battery sold by itself must meet 349.244: “Lithium-ion cells and batteries must be in their sealed packaging” ([Publication 52, 349.244](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_028.htm)), and “Mailpieces must be sent by surface transportation only, unless both mailed from, and intended for delivery to, the state of Alaska” ([Publication 52, 349.244(d)](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_028.htm)); the package needs a DOT lithium battery mark “specifying "UN3480" on the address side” and the words “Surface Mail Only, Lithium-ion Batteries - Forbidden for Transportation Aboard Passenger Aircraft”. A lithium metal battery sold alone has the same packaging rule, “Lithium metal cells and batteries must be mailed in the sealed packaging” ([349.234](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_028.htm)); it goes by surface only in a package of 5 lb or less, with a mark indicating UN3090 and one of two lines of text, such as “Surface Mail Only, Lithium Metal Batteries - Forbidden for Transportation Aboard Passenger Aircraft” ([349.234](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_028.htm)).

### Packing and declaring

“Mailpieces containing lithium batteries must be packaged in rigid outer packaging unless excepted under 339.4” ([Publication 52, 349.221(c)](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_028.htm)); a padded or poly bag is allowed only inside the original box, and only if “The equipment/device must be new, or manufacturer refurbished” ([Publication 52, 339.4](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_019.htm)). “Equipment containing lithium batteries must have effective means of preventing it from being inadvertently turned on or activated” ([Publication 52, 349.221(g)](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_028.htm)). Not in a free Priority Mail box: “USPS-produced Priority Mail Express and Priority Mail packaging supplies may not be used for shipping mailable hazardous materials” ([Publication 52, 339.3](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_019.htm)). And a used camera with its battery can't go by Priority Mail at all: “Mailable hazardous materials that are prohibited from air transportation may not be sent as Priority Mail Express or Priority Mail” ([Publication 52, 327.11](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_008.htm)). When you buy the label: “Mailers must identify whether a shipment contains hazardous materials when generating the label” ([Publication 52, 323.1](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_004.htm)).

### If a package isn't declared

- USPS charges $50 on a commercial-price package when it finds hazardous materials that weren't declared and labeled (Notice 123: HAZMAT Noncompliance Fee; [tracker entry](https://resellerindex.com/changes/usps/2026-07-12-usps-hazmat-noncompliance-fee/)). The Ground Advantage HAZMAT Handling Fee is $0.00.
- Mercari: for packages postmarked from Sep 1, 2026, Mercari pays $25 of that fee and takes $25 from the seller ([tracker entry](https://resellerindex.com/changes/mercari/2026-09-01-mercari-hazmat-fee-split/)).
- Poshmark: since Oct 19, 2026, sellers pay the full $50 from their earnings when USPS flags a package ([tracker entry](https://resellerindex.com/changes/poshmark/2026-10-19-poshmark-hazmat-fee-full/)).

## Platform rules that apply to cameras and lenses

### eBay: the general rate on the whole order

Cameras pay 13.6% plus a per-order fee, and “The total amount of the sale includes the item price, any handling charges, any shipping costs collected from the buyer (some exceptions apply), sales tax, and any other applicable fees” ([eBay fee page](https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/fees-credits-invoices/selling-fees?id=4822)). On a $700 camera with $8.91 of buyer-paid shipping, the fee is $96.81 instead of $95.60.

### Poshmark: 20%, no authentication

Poshmark charges 20% on sales of $15 and up: $140.00 on $700. Posh Authenticate doesn't apply: “Only select luxury items sold for $500 or higher qualify for Posh Authenticate. All categories qualify, except for Electronics, Home, Pets, Toys, and Games” ([Poshmark](https://poshmark.com/posh_authenticate)).

### Mercari: under the price limit

“When you purchase or list on Mercari, there's usually a $2,000 price limit” ([Mercari](https://www.mercari.com/us/help_center/article/515/)), so an $1,800 camera fits. Cameras aren't on Mercari Authenticate's list: “The current categories available for authentication are handbags, wallets, eyewear, jewelry, watches, and designer shoes” ([Mercari](https://www.mercari.com/us/help_center/article/515/)). Mercari's 10% applies to buyer-paid shipping too: $180.89 with $8.91 of shipping.

### TikTok Shop, Whatnot and Etsy

TikTok Shop's Cameras & Photography rate is 6% of item plus shipping: $108.00 on $1,800. Whatnot charges its standard commission plus processing (its fee page as checked Oct 14, 2026): $196.50. Etsy takes vintage cameras only, “handpicked items that are over 20 years old” ([Etsy, as checked Oct 14, 2026](https://help.etsy.com/hc/en-us/articles/23948763872151-Does-Etsy-Allow-Drop-Shipping-or-Reselling)).

## Packing a camera or lens

From USPS's packaging standards ([DMM 601.3](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/601.htm)) and its packing steps ([USPS: How to send a package](https://www.usps.com/ship/packages.htm)):

1. “Mailpieces containing lithium batteries must be packaged in rigid outer packaging unless excepted under 339.4” ([Publication 52, 349.221(c)](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_028.htm)); a padded or poly bag is allowed only for a new or manufacturer-refurbished camera inside its original box ([Publication 52, 339.4](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_019.htm)).
2. “Equipment containing lithium batteries must have effective means of preventing it from being inadvertently turned on or activated” ([Publication 52, 349.221(g)](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_028.htm)).
3. Cap the lens and cushion everything: “Cushion ... fragile items to withstand handling in processing, transportation, and delivery” ([DMM 601.3.1.1](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/601.htm)).
4. “Package contents so they do not shift within the mailing container” ([DMM 601.3.1.1](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/601.htm)).
5. “Use enough 2-inch-wide packing tape to close and secure all seams” ([USPS](https://www.usps.com/ship/packages.htm)).

## Edge cases

### A lens on its own

A lens with no battery in the box isn't a lithium battery shipment, so the marks and the ground-only rule don't apply, and it can go by Priority Mail. Under 1 lb it costs $7.33 to $8.95 by commercial Ground Advantage (Zones 1-8).

### A used spare battery by itself

Pub 52 requires a lithium-ion battery mailed without its equipment to be in its sealed packaging ([349.244](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_028.htm)). A used spare out of its package doesn't meet that, so it can't go on its own.

### Insurance and signature together

“combining multiple extra services (e.g., signature confirmation and insurance less than or equal to $500) is prohibited when mailing hazardous materials” ([Publication 52, 323.2](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_004.htm)). Over $500 insured, USPS collects a signature anyway: “An item insured for more than $500.00 receives a delivery scan ... and USPS provides a signature as the delivery record to the mailer electronically” ([DMM 503.4.3.1](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/503.htm)). So on a $700 camera, insure it ($10.55) and the signature comes with it; on a $250 camera, pick insurance ($4.55) or Signature Confirmation ($4.15), not both.

### A used camera to an APO address or abroad

Used devices with lithium batteries “are prohibited and may not be mailed internationally or to, from, or between APO, FPO, or DPO locations under any circumstances” ([Publication 52, 622.5](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c6_005.htm)), so a used camera can't go to an APO, FPO or DPO address or overseas with its battery. A new one can go, where the destination country or APO/FPO/DPO ZIP Code doesn't bar it, only with the battery installed: “Batteries must be installed in the equipment being shipped” ([Publication 52, 622.5](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c6_005.htm)); “Each shipment may contain a maximum of four lithium cells or two lithium batteries” ([Publication 52, 622.5](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c6_005.htm)); and “Mailpieces must not display markings or labels identifying the contents as lithium batteries” ([Publication 52, 622.5](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c6_005.htm)). A spare packed beside it is prohibited.

### Film cameras

Pub 52 notes that non-rechargeable lithium metal batteries are “often used in consumer products such as cameras and flashlights” ([Publication 52, 349.2](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_028.htm)), and limits them: “Each cell must not exceed more than 1.0 gram of lithium” ([Publication 52, 349.231](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_028.htm)). A film camera that takes no lithium battery, or ships without one, isn't a lithium battery shipment.

## Questions

### Can I ship a used camera with the battery in it?

Yes, by ground. Pub 52 says “Used, damaged, or defective electronic devices are prohibited from air transportation”, and USPS says used items with lithium batteries “if the items are used, they can only be sent via ground transport (can't go on planes)” ([USPS](https://www.usps.com/ship/packages.htm)). Mark the package “Restricted Electronic Device” and “Surface Transportation Only”, use a rigid box, and declare it when you buy the label.

### Do I need a lithium battery label on a camera box?

Not for batteries installed in the camera, up to four cells or two batteries: “Mailpieces containing button-cell batteries installed in equipment (including circuit boards) or no more than four lithium cells or two lithium batteries installed in the equipment they operate are excepted” ([Publication 52, 349.221(d)](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_028.htm)). A spare packed loose in the box does need one: “Mailpieces must display a DOT-approved lithium battery mark ... indicating UN3481, on the address side” ([Publication 52, 349.243](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_028.htm)). For a lithium metal spare the mark indicates UN3091 instead ([349.233](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_028.htm)).

### Can a used camera go by Priority Mail?

Not with its battery: “Used, damaged, or defective electronic devices are prohibited from air transportation” ([Publication 52, 349 (Domestic Lithium Battery Mailability)](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_028.htm)), and “Mailable hazardous materials that are prohibited from air transportation may not be sent as Priority Mail Express or Priority Mail” ([Publication 52, 327.11](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c3_008.htm)). USPS calls Ground Advantage “also the primary option for HAZMAT items that can't travel by air” ([USPS](https://www.usps.com/ship/packages.htm)): $8.39 to $13.42 for a 2 lb boxed body at commercial prices.

### What does eBay charge on a $700 camera?

$95.60 with no shipping charged and $96.81 with $8.91 of buyer-paid shipping: 13.6% of the total plus $0.40 ([eBay](https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/fees-credits-invoices/selling-fees?id=4822)).

### How much does it cost to ship a camera lens?

A boxed lens costs $7.33 to $8.95 under 1 lb and $8.01 to $11.22 at 1 lb by commercial Ground Advantage (Zones 1-8); at the Post Office, 1 lb costs $10.05 to $13.65. Insuring a $700 lens adds $10.55.

Since July 12, 2026, USPS has charged a $50 HAZMAT Noncompliance Fee on commercial packages when it detects hazardous materials that weren't declared and labeled. Mercari's help page describes it as the fee USPS charges when a non-hazardous item ships in a box that still shows a HAZMAT label. For Mercari packages postmarked from September 1, 2026, Mercari pays $25 and takes $25 from the seller's earnings; earlier packages are exempt from the seller share. To avoid it, remove or fully black out old hazmat labels.

Since July 12, 2026, USPS charges a $50 HAZMAT Noncompliance Fee on commercial-price competitive packages (Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, Ground Advantage, Parcel Select and others) when it detects hazardous materials that weren't declared and labeled. Poshmark says the most common cause is reusing a box that still has old hazmat labels or markings, and Mercari tells sellers to remove or fully black out old hazmat labels on reused boxes. Notice 123 doesn't list the fee for Media Mail or for retail counter prices.

A penalty, not a per-sale fee: $50 for each flagged commercial-label package. Mercari pays $25 of it (since Sept 1), and Poshmark pays none from Oct 19. eBay's notice on the July 12 USPS changes, which covers eBay Labels, says a $50.00 fee will be charged for every Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express and Ground Advantage package that doesn't meet USPS hazmat requirements, and tells sellers to remove or cover old markings on reused packaging (per the saved copy of Oct 14, 2026).
