# What it costs to sell and ship a pair of sneakers

On a $150 pair of sneakers, Depop takes $5.40, TikTok Shop $7.50 for a pre-owned pair, eBay $12.00, Mercari $15.00, Whatnot $16.65 and Poshmark $30.00, before shipping. A boxed pair up to 3 lb ships by Ground Advantage for $9.04 to $16.30 at USPS commercial prices (Zones 1-8); shoes can't go by Media Mail.

eBay's 8% rate for athletic shoes starts when the total, shipping and sales tax included, reaches $150; [eBay fees for sneakers](https://resellerindex.com/guides/ebay-fees/sneakers/) has the rule word for word and the $140-plus-shipping case worked through. ### If the buyer pays $10.07 shipping

Here the buyer pays the commercial Ground Advantage price for 3 lb to Zone 4 and all of it goes on the label. eBay, Mercari, Etsy, Amazon and TikTok Shop take their percentage from buyer-paid shipping too, and Whatnot's and Depop's processing fees cover it; Poshmark buyers pay Poshmark's own label instead.

- **$80:** with buyer-paid shipping, Depop leaves $76.58 and Poshmark $64.00, a gap of $12.58.
- **$140:** with buyer-paid shipping, Depop leaves $134.60 and Poshmark $112.00, a gap of $22.60.
- **$150:** with buyer-paid shipping, Depop leaves $144.27 and Poshmark $120.00, a gap of $24.27.
- **$400:** with buyer-paid shipping, Depop leaves $386.02 and Poshmark $320.00, a gap of $66.02.

- **eBay:** For Athletic Shoes in eBay's Men's and Women's Shoes categories: “8% if total amount of the sale is $150 or more. The per order fee is not charged” ([eBay fee page](https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/fees-credits-invoices/selling-fees?id=4822)). Other shoes pay the most-categories rate.
- **TikTok Shop:** TikTok Shop lists Pre-Owned Footwear at 5%; new shoes listed under Shoes pay 6% ([TikTok Shop Academy](https://seller-us.tiktok.com/university/essay?knowledge_id=5988482086864682&lang=en)).
- Amazon isn't in the table: this site tracks Amazon's media fees only. Amazon's pricing page lists Footwear at 15% with a $0.30 minimum [(Amazon, saved copy Oct 14, 2026)](https://sell.amazon.com/pricing), and “A product's fee category may not be the same as the category that appears to customers in the Amazon store”. Whether a used pair of sneakers can be listed there depends on Amazon's own condition and category rules, which this page doesn't cover.

- eBay also charges its percentage on sales tax, which the tables leave out: [eBay fees on sales tax](https://resellerindex.com/guides/ebay-fees-on-sales-tax/).
- Whatnot's commission falls at higher four-week sales tiers; the tables use the standard tier, 8% in every category except Coins (Whatnot's fee page as checked Oct 14, 2026).
- § Depop and Whatnot: the rates, and the Depop and Whatnot rules quoted on this page, are from each platform's own help pages as checked Oct 14, 2026. Those help centers block automated checks, so we couldn't re-check them for this update; confirm on the platform before you price around them. On Depop's selling fee, Etsy, Inc.'s annual report for 2025 (Etsy owned Depop then) says “In 2024, Depop removed seller transaction fees for sellers based in the U.K. and the U.S.” ([Etsy, Inc. Form 10-K](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1370637/000137063726000019/etsy-20251231.htm)); the 3.3% + $0.45 processing fee is from Depop's page. Since then “Etsy completed the previously announced sale of Depop to eBay Inc.” on July 30, 2026 ([Etsy, Inc. Form 8-K, filed Jul 30, 2026](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1370637/000137063726000071/etsy-20260730.htm)), so Depop's own fee page is the one that counts.

## Shipping a pair of sneakers: USPS prices by weight

Media Mail is limited by what's inside, not by size: “Only these items may be mailed at the Media Mail prices” ([DMM 173.4.1](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/173.htm)). The list is books, 16 mm films, printed music, test materials, sound and video recordings, playscripts and manuscripts, printed educational charts, medical loose-leaf pages and computer-readable media. Anything else pays parcel prices, and “If you try to include anything that's not allowed, you (or your recipient) will have to pay higher postage rates” ([USPS](https://www.usps.com/ship/mail-shipping-services.htm)). USPS can check: “the mailing of articles at Media Mail or Library Mail prices constitutes consent by the mailer to postal inspection of the contents” ([DMM 173.2.2](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/173.htm)).

That leaves USPS Ground Advantage as the tracked option: packages up to 70 lb, with USPS Tracking and up to $100 of insurance included ([USPS](https://www.usps.com/ship/mail-shipping-services.htm)).

Shoes aren't on that list.

### When the box costs more than the pair of sneakers

For Ground Advantage, a parcel “exceeding 1 cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches) is based on the actual weight or the dimensional weight ... whichever is greater” ([DMM 283.1.4](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/283.htm)). USPS rounds each side up to a whole inch, multiplies them, and if the result is over 1,728 cubic inches, says to “divide the result by 139 and round up ... to the next whole number to determine the dimensional weight in pounds”.

Example: a 3 lb pair in an 18 x 13 x 8 in. carton. 18 x 13 x 8 = 1,872 cubic inches, so it bills as 14 lb instead of 3 lb. At commercial prices that's $15.78 instead of $9.04 to Zone 1, $18.18 instead of $10.07 to Zone 4, $33.28 instead of $16.30 to Zone 8. A box cut down to fit, or a smaller carton, can get under 1 cubic foot: 1,728 cubic inches is 12 x 12 x 12 in.

### Cubic prices: when the box size, not the weight, sets the price

Commercial Ground Advantage has a second price table, Cubic, for boxes of 1 cubic foot or less: “must measure 1 cubic foot or less, weigh 20 pounds or less, and the longest dimension must not exceed 22 inches” ([DMM 283.1.3.1](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/283.htm)). USPS says to round down “each measurement to the nearest 1/4 inch” ([283.1.3.3](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/283.htm)), multiply the three sides and divide by 1,728, and the box pays the next 0.1 tier up. Cubic prices are commercial prices; whether a platform's own label offers them is up to the platform.

For a normal pair the price by weight is lower in every zone; Cubic only wins for heavy boots in a snug box. Either way, a carton over 1 cubic foot leaves Cubic and can bill by size (below).

## Platform labels

A label bought through a selling platform follows that platform's price list. These are the label prices on our [change tracker](https://resellerindex.com/changes/) for the platforms above, from each platform's own page; each note says when that page was checked if it wasn't re-checked for this update.

- **Whatnot.** Since Jul 31, 2026, Whatnot's default label is Ground Advantage: $4.47 under 4 oz, $4.85 under 8 oz, $5.25 under 12 oz, $6.75 under 16 oz, and $7.75 for 1-5 lb at any distance (Whatnot's help page as checked Oct 14, 2026; [tracker entry](https://resellerindex.com/changes/whatnot/2026-07-31-whatnot-ground-advantage-default/)). Over that, Whatnot says “Packages over 5 lbs use zone-based Ground Advantage commercial pricing” ([Whatnot, as checked Oct 14, 2026](https://help.whatnot.com/hc/en-us/articles/46768886074765-USPS-shipping-updates-on-Whatnot-as-of-July-31)), and it warns: “Using Priority Mail or Flat Rate packaging with Ground Advantage labels may result in returned packages and USPS fees of approximately $20 per package”. Buyers usually pay Whatnot shipping.
- **Mercari.** Since Oct 19, 2026, Best-rate Ground Advantage labels cost $7.99 at 1 lb (was $7.48) and $13.99 at 3 lb (was $12.83). Packages over 1 cu ft or longer than 22 in. pay Standard rates: 1 lb goes from $7.59 to $8.99 ([tracker entry](https://resellerindex.com/changes/mercari/2026-10-19-mercari-label-rates-up/)).
- **Poshmark.** Buyers pay for Poshmark's standard label, which covers packages up to 5 lb. Heavier packages need an upgrade that you pay: $5.00 for 5.01-10 lb and $10.00 for 10.01-15 lb. From Oct 26, 2026, Poshmark deducts the upgrade even if you ship on the standard label ([Poshmark](https://blog.poshmark.com/2026/10/08/shipping-heavier-items-how-label-upgrades-work/); [tracker entry](https://resellerindex.com/changes/poshmark/2026-10-26-poshmark-overweight-label-deductions/)). Every package on this page is 5 lb or less.
- **eBay Labels** and other label services use their own prices; this page uses USPS's published prices so every platform is compared on the same postage.

## Insurance and signature on a pair of sneakers

“Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, and USPS Ground Advantage include $100.00 of insurance coverage” ([DMM 503, Exhibit 1.4.1](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/503.htm)); Media Mail isn't on that list and includes none. Beyond that, “additional insurance may be purchased for no more than a maximum coverage of $5,000.00” ([DMM 503.4.2](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/503.htm)), and “Insurance coverage only covers the actual value of mail contents” ([USPS](https://www.usps.com/ship/insurance-extra-services.htm)). “Insurance fees are based on the item's declared value” ([USPS](https://www.usps.com/ship/insurance-extra-services.htm)). “An item insured for more than $500.00 receives a delivery scan ... and USPS provides a signature as the delivery record to the mailer electronically” ([DMM 503.4.3.1](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/503.htm)). Under that, Signature Confirmation costs $4.15 online or $5.15 at the counter ([Notice 123](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/Notice123.htm)).

*USPS insurance fees for insuring the full sale price, Notice 123 effective Oct 4, 2026 (fee for the coverage amount; $2.80 for up to $50, then by band; $9.05 plus $1.50 per $100 over $600). Registered Mail is a separate service that includes insurance up to $50,000.*

- Insured for more than $500, the buyer “may be required to show an acceptable primary ID before USPS will deliver the mailpiece” ([USPS](https://www.usps.com/ship/insurance-extra-services.htm)).

## Platform rules that apply to sneakers

### eBay Authenticity Guarantee and shipping

“For sneakers sold through Authenticity Guarantee with a free shipping label provided to you, eBay collects a flat shipping charge from the buyer but there is no final value fee charged on shipping” ([eBay fee page](https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/fees-credits-invoices/selling-fees?id=4822)). So on those orders you don't buy the label, and the shipping charge adds nothing to eBay's fee. This page doesn't list eBay's Authenticity Guarantee price thresholds, because we couldn't check them against eBay's own page for this update; eBay's sneaker rate itself is on [eBay fees for sneakers](https://resellerindex.com/guides/ebay-fees/sneakers/).

### Mercari Authenticate

“When you list a handbag, wallet, jewelry, watch, glasses, or pair of shoes over $100, authentication is completely optional unless you list over the required Authentication dollar amount for that category and brand of item” ([Mercari](https://www.mercari.com/us/help_center/article/475/)). “We charge a flat $5 for each designer item you submit for authentication” ([Mercari](https://www.mercari.com/us/help_center/article/508/)), and “While items are pending review, they will not be live on the Mercari marketplace and will not appear in the search results” ([Mercari](https://www.mercari.com/us/help_center/article/475/)).

### TikTok Shop and Poshmark

TikTok Shop's Pre-Owned Footwear rate is 5% of item plus shipping: $7.50 on a $150 pair. Poshmark charges 20%: $30.00, and pairs from select luxury brands sold for $500 or more go through Posh Authenticate first ([Poshmark](https://poshmark.com/posh_authenticate)).

## Packing a pair of sneakers

From USPS's packaging standards ([DMM 601.3](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/601.htm)) and its packing steps ([USPS: How to send a package](https://www.usps.com/ship/packages.htm)):

1. Ship the shoe box inside a shipping box: “Mailers must package mailpieces to withstand normal transit and handling without breakage or deterioration of content” ([DMM 601.3.1.1](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/601.htm)).
2. “Package contents so they do not shift within the mailing container” ([DMM 601.3.1.1](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/601.htm)).
3. Right-size the carton: a parcel should be “Sized based on the contents (rightsized) to maintain integrity during processing” ([DMM 601.3.1.2](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/601.htm)). A carton over 1 cubic foot bills by size (example above).
4. Reusing a retailer's box? USPS says to “make sure all old logos, barcodes, shipping labels, and addresses are covered or blacked out” ([USPS](https://www.usps.com/ship/packages.htm)).
5. Don't use a free Priority Mail box with a Ground Advantage label: “if you use a Priority Mail box, you have to pay for Priority Mail service” ([USPS](https://www.usps.com/ship/packages.htm)).

## Edge cases

### Cubic prices for a shoe box

Cubic sounds made for shoe boxes, but at sneaker weights it costs more. A 14 x 10 x 5 in. box is tier 0.5: $10.24 to $19.95 at Cubic prices against $9.04 to $16.30 by weight for a 3 lb pair, and weight still wins at 4 lb ($9.93 to $19.06). Cubic starts to win only when the box is heavy for its size, like 5 lb of boots in a 14 x 10 x 6 in. box ($10.24 to $19.95 against $10.35 to $20.24; table above).

### Dress shoes and boots on eBay

eBay's 8% rate covers Athletic Shoes in Men's and Women's Shoes only. Other shoes pay 13.6% plus the per-order fee: $20.80 on a $150 pair, against $12.00 for sneakers.

### The carton that bills by size

The 18 x 13 x 8 in. carton above holds 1,872 cubic inches and bills as 14 lb: $18.18 to Zone 4 instead of $10.07. A 16 x 12 x 7 in. carton (1,344 cubic inches) pays by weight.

### Insurance on a $400 pair

Ground Advantage includes $100 of coverage; insuring $400 costs $6.05 ([Notice 123](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/Notice123.htm)). Signature Confirmation is $4.15 online; over $500 insured, USPS collects a signature anyway. A claim needs proof of value: “Either the mailer or the addressee must submit acceptable proof to establish the cost or value of the article at the time it was mailed” ([DMM 609.3.2](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/609.htm)). USPS's examples include “A sales receipt, paid invoice or bill of sale, or statement of value from a reputable dealer”, and, for a sale paid through an online payment account, a printout of the transaction ([DMM 609.3.2](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/609.htm)).

### What does a $150 pair cost to sell on each app?

Before shipping: Depop $5.40, TikTok Shop $7.50 (Pre-Owned), eBay $12.00, Mercari $15.00, Whatnot $16.65 and Poshmark $30.00. Whether shipping counts toward eBay's $150 line is answered on [eBay fees for sneakers](https://resellerindex.com/guides/ebay-fees/sneakers/).

### Is Cubic cheaper than weight for a shoe box?

Not for most sneakers. A 3 lb pair in a 14 x 10 x 5 in. box costs $10.07 by weight to Zone 4 against $11.58 at its Cubic tier (0.5). Cubic comes out lower once the box is dense, such as 5 lb of boots in 14 x 10 x 6 in.: $11.58 against $11.67. Cubic boxes “must measure 1 cubic foot or less, weigh 20 pounds or less, and the longest dimension must not exceed 22 inches” ([DMM 283.1.3.1](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/283.htm)).

### How much does it cost to ship a pair of sneakers?

A boxed pair up to 3 lb costs $9.04 to $16.30 by commercial Ground Advantage (Zones 1-8), $11.80 to $23.15 at the Post Office. Keep the carton at 1 cubic foot or less so it pays by weight.

### Does Mercari authenticate sneakers?

Shoes are one of Mercari Authenticate's categories: “When you list a handbag, wallet, jewelry, watch, glasses, or pair of shoes over $100, authentication is completely optional unless you list over the required Authentication dollar amount for that category and brand of item” ([Mercari](https://www.mercari.com/us/help_center/article/475/)). It costs $5 per item ([Mercari](https://www.mercari.com/us/help_center/article/508/)).

### Does Poshmark authenticate sneakers?

Only at the top end: “Only select luxury items sold for $500 or higher qualify for Posh Authenticate. All categories qualify, except for Electronics, Home, Pets, Toys, and Games” ([Poshmark](https://poshmark.com/posh_authenticate)). A qualifying order goes to Poshmark for authentication before it reaches the buyer, and “Posh Authenticate is a free service for qualifying orders for both sellers and buyers” ([Poshmark](https://poshmark.com/posh_authenticate)). A $150 pair isn't covered and pays Poshmark's 20%: $30.00, with the buyer paying for the label.
