# What should a seller do with a wrong Form 1099-K?

**Contact the filer named in the upper left corner of the form and ask for a corrected Form 1099-K; the IRS says it can't correct the form for you.** If a corrected form doesn't arrive, the IRS says not to wait to file: you can zero out the error, and for 2025 returns an amount reported in error goes in the entry space at the top of Schedule 1.

General information from IRS sources, not tax advice. It doesn't say what you should file; check with a tax professional about your own situation.

## First check: is it actually wrong?

A 1099-K that's bigger than your payouts usually isn't an error. Box 1a is a gross figure, before anything comes off.

*From the IRS pages What to do with Form 1099-K and Understanding your Form 1099-K, the Form 1099-K FAQs, the Instructions for Form 1099-K (12/2026), box 1a, Publication 334 (2025), chapter 5, and the Instructions for Schedule C (2025), line 23.*

| What you see | An error? | What the IRS says |
| --- | --- | --- |
| The gross is higher than what was paid out to you | Usually not | The gross isn't adjusted for fees, credits, refunds, shipping, cash equivalents or discounts. The IRS says to check your records for these and deduct them from the gross |
| The gross seems to include sales tax | Not necessarily | Publication 334 says a 1099-K may include items that aren't in your receipts, such as sales tax. The Schedule C instructions say sales tax imposed on buyers that a seller collects and pays over isn't gross receipts |
| You got forms from more than one platform | No | If you accept payments on different platforms, you could get more than one |
| A form for a small amount of card sales | No | There's no threshold for payment card transactions; the over-$20,000, more-than-200 test applies to payment apps and online marketplaces |
| Gifts or reimbursements from friends or family are included | Yes | Gifts and reimbursements for shared costs aren't payments for goods or services, so they aren't reportable on a Form 1099-K |
| The form isn't yours, or it duplicates another | Yes | Ask the issuer for a corrected form showing a zero amount |
| Your taxpayer identification number or the gross amount is wrong | Yes | Request a corrected form from the issuer |

## Matching the form to your records

Box 1a is the year's total. Boxes 5a through 5l show the gross amount for each month of the calendar year, so a difference between the form and your own records can be traced to the month it's in by comparing each month with your own monthly totals.

The IRS's Form 1099-K questions say fees, credits, refunds, shipping, cash equivalents and discounts aren't income and can be deducted from the gross amount when you include the income on your return; how they're shown is covered on [are selling fees deductible](https://resellerindex.com/tax/irs/are-selling-fees-deductible/).

## The steps the IRS lists

1. Find the filer's name and contact information in the upper left corner of the form. If you don't recognize the filer, contact the payment settlement entity named in the lower left corner, above your account number.
2. Ask for a corrected Form 1099-K. For a form you shouldn't have received at all, ask for one that shows a zero amount.
3. Keep a copy of the original form, any corrected form and all correspondence with the issuer.
4. Don't contact the IRS about the correction: it says it can't correct your Form 1099-K.
5. Don't wait to file. The IRS says to file even if a corrected form doesn't arrive.

## If a corrected form doesn't come

The 2025 Form 1040 instructions say an amount reported in error goes in the entry space at the top of Schedule 1. If only part of a form is wrong, only that part goes there, and the rest is reported elsewhere on the return depending on the nature of the transactions. Amounts from several incorrect forms are added together.

If the taxpayer identification number is the problem, the IRS says to report the payments from the form on the return you normally file.

## Worked examples

### The IRS's example with two forms

One Form 1099-K wrongly shows $800. A second shows $6,000, of which $700 was reported in error. The 2025 Form 1040 instructions put $1,500 ($800 plus $700) in the entry space at the top of Schedule 1, and the remaining $5,300 is reported elsewhere depending on the nature of the transactions.

### Gross versus payouts on a reseller's account

A platform's annual report shows 412 orders and $21,640 in gross sales, including shipping buyers paid, with $2,815 in fees and $430 in refunds; payouts were $18,395. A 1099-K showing $21,640 matches the gross, so it isn't wrong. The $2,815 and the $430 come from your own records: see [are selling fees deductible](https://resellerindex.com/tax/irs/are-selling-fees-deductible/).

## Edge cases

- If the form carries your name and number but your business files Form 1120, 1120-S or 1065, the IRS says the form needs to be corrected.
- If tax was withheld (box 4) because of backup withholding, the IRS says to report that withholding when you file so you pay only what you owe.
- Platforms and card companies must send your copy by January 31.
- If someone else's payments went through your card terminal, the IRS page has separate steps, including filing information returns for the other person or business where required.

## What to do

1. Compare the 1099-K gross with the platform's own annual gross sales report before deciding it's wrong. [Where each app keeps its reports](https://resellerindex.com/guides/sales-reports-for-taxes/).
2. Contact the filer as soon as you find a real error.
3. Keep the correspondence with that year's tax records.
4. Check with a tax professional about how to report a form that stays wrong.

## Questions

### Should I call the IRS about a wrong 1099-K?

No. The IRS says it can't correct your Form 1099-K; contact the filer shown in the upper left corner, or the payment settlement entity shown in the lower left corner.

### Is my 1099-K wrong if it's more than I was paid out?

Not necessarily. The gross amount in box 1a is figured without any adjustment for fees, refunds, shipping and similar amounts, so it is usually higher than your payouts.

### Can I wait for the corrected form before filing?

The IRS says not to wait: file even if you can't get a corrected Form 1099-K.

### Friends paid me back through a payment app and it shows on my 1099-K. Is that income?

The IRS says gifts and reimbursements for shared costs aren't payments for goods or services and aren't reportable on Form 1099-K. Ask the filer for a corrected form; if one doesn't come, that part is an amount reported in error. What the payment was for is what counts: the IRS also says a payment can be taxable even when it isn't reported on a 1099-K.

### I got a 1099-K for a few hundred dollars of card sales. Is that a mistake?

Not by itself. The IRS says there is no threshold for payment card transactions, so even $0.01 of card payments should bring a Form 1099-K. The over-$20,000, more-than-200-transaction test is for payment apps and online marketplaces.
