USPS hadn't posted its 2027 list when we checked, so the 2027 dates below are the federal ones, with what USPS did the last times a holiday fell on a weekend. Checked against USPS and OPM on Oct 19, 2026. ## USPS holidays in 2026 Dates from USPS's own list ([USPS newsroom](https://about.usps.com/newsroom/events/)), which matches the rules in [ELM 518.1](https://about.usps.com/manuals/elm/html/elmc5_008.htm). "Widely" or "non-widely observed" and the day service returns are from USPS's operations memo for each holiday; for the last three of the year, USPS hadn't posted 2026 memos when we checked, so the 2025 memo is shown. *USPS holidays 2026: no regular mail delivery, Post Offices closed. USPS: "Post Offices will be open, and deliveries will occur as normal on Friday, July 3." Federal offices observed it on Friday, July 3, 2026 ([OPM](https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/federal-holidays/)), so that Friday was a federal holiday but a normal mail day. - **Friday holidays:** Juneteenth (June 19) and Christmas Day (December 25). For Juneteenth, USPS said "Regular mail delivery and retail services will resume on Saturday, June 20." ## What still runs on a USPS holiday - **Post Office counters:** closed. USPS's releases say "All Post Office locations will be closed." and that "self-service kiosks are available in select lobbies nationwide", with "Postage printing for Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express and international shipping" ([USPS](https://about.usps.com/newsroom/national-releases/2026/0626-usps-will-be-closed-in-observance-of-independence-day-july-4.htm)). - **Regular mail delivery:** none. The memos say "There will be no regular delivery service except for Holiday Premium Priority Mail Express and Holiday Same Day Package delivery." ([Labor Day 2026 memo](https://about.usps.com/who/legal/foia/documents/delivery-operations/labor-day-2026.pdf)). - **Priority Mail Express:** delivered on holidays where USPS offers it ("Sunday and holiday delivery available in many major markets for an additional fee", [USPS](https://www.usps.com/ship/priority-mail-express.htm)) for a premium of $12.50 ("For Sunday/Holiday delivery, add $12.50", [Notice 123](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/Notice123.htm)). Not on Saturday, July 4, 2026: "There will be no regular delivery service, premium express mail delivery or mail collection service" ([USPS memo](https://about.usps.com/who/legal/foia/documents/delivery-operations/independence-day-2026.pdf)). - **Collection boxes:** it depends on the holiday. For Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Labor Day and Veterans Day (2025 memo), the memos say "District Managers will coordinate with plant partners and perform full collections if cancellations are scheduled." For New Year's Day, Thanksgiving Day (2025 memo) and Christmas Day (2025 memo): "There will be no regular collections." For July 4, 2026: "There will be no regular delivery service or mail collection service." The memo for Columbus Day doesn't say. - **Processing plants:** the memos plan plant work for each holiday. For Labor Day 2026: "This holiday presents an opportunity to consolidate and compress plant operations to generate savings while maintaining service performance levels." ([USPS memo](https://about.usps.com/who/legal/foia/documents/delivery-operations/labor-day-2026.pdf)). **Widely vs non-widely observed.** New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day: "Labor Day is a widely observed holiday, which means that many businesses are closed and not producing outgoing mail." Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Juneteenth, Columbus Day and Veterans Day: "Juneteenth Day is a non-widely observed holiday, which means that many businesses are open and producing outgoing mail." ## What a holiday does to delivery dates and ship-by dates USPS's rule: "If you send mail on a Saturday or the day before a holiday, the Sunday or holiday is not included in the expected delivery time." ([USPS service standards](https://www.usps.com/service-standards/)). Worked through for this year's midweek holidays, for a service with a 2-day standard: - **Veterans Day:** mailed Tuesday, November 10, 2026, the day before; November 11 doesn't count, so the expected delivery date is Friday, November 13, 2026, not Thursday, November 12, 2026. - **Thanksgiving Day:** mailed Wednesday, November 25, 2026, the day before; November 26 doesn't count, so the expected delivery date is Saturday, November 28, 2026, not Friday, November 27, 2026. - **Handling time:** whether a postal holiday counts toward your handling time is up to each marketplace's own policy, not USPS. Check the marketplace's seller help pages, and if it lets you mark postal holidays as non-shipping days, set them, so your ship-by dates match the days USPS takes mail. - **What to do:** ship the business day before a holiday when you can, and get the package into the mail before your Post Office's last collection that day; a label printed on a holiday gets no counter acceptance until Post Offices reopen. How USPS counts days for each service, with more worked dates: [USPS delivery times](https://resellerindex.com/usps/delivery-times/). Last days to ship for Christmas: [holiday shipping deadlines 2026](https://resellerindex.com/rates/usps-holiday-shipping-deadlines-2026/). ## 2027: the federal dates (USPS hasn't posted its list) The legal date of each holiday follows the rules in [ELM 518.1](https://about.usps.com/manuals/elm/html/elmc5_008.htm) ("The following 11 days are observed as holidays by the U.S. Postal Service"). The federal date is the day OPM lists for federal employees: "If a holiday falls on a Saturday, for most Federal employees, the preceding Friday will be treated as a holiday for pay and leave purposes." and "If a holiday falls on a Sunday, for most Federal employees, the following Monday will be treated as a holiday for pay and leave purposes." ([OPM](https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/federal-holidays/)). 4 of the 2027 holidays fall on a weekend, so the federal date differs: Juneteenth, Independence Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. *Holidays for 2027 (plus New Year's Day 2028, whose federal date is Dec 31, 2027). Legal dates per ELM 518.1; federal dates from [OPM](https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/federal-holidays/). ([ELM 518.2](https://about.usps.com/manuals/elm/html/elmc5_008.htm)). That is a pay and leave rule. For Sunday holidays the memos also closed on the Monday, but for each Saturday holiday above the memos kept the Friday a normal delivery day. **The list date isn't always the closure date.** For New Year's Day 2022 (a Saturday), USPS's public list showed Friday, December 31, 2021, with this note: "If a holiday falls on a Saturday, for most USPS employees, the preceding Friday will be treated as a holiday for pay and leave purposes." ([archived USPS list](https://web.archive.org/web/20211213050410/https://about.usps.com/newsroom/events/)). The operations memo for that weekend kept Friday a delivery day: "Friday, December 24 and Friday, December 31: Normal (Friday) service levels will be provided in delivery operations." On the Saturday: "There will be no collections or regular delivery (except for Holiday Premium Priority Mail Express)." It also allowed earlier pickups that Friday: "All collection points with a scheduled last collection after 12:00 noon may be advanced to as early as 12:00 Noon." ([USPS memo, scanned; quotes transcribed](https://about.usps.com/who/legal/foia/documents/delivery-operations/christmas-2021-new-years-2022-letter.pdf)). ## Is USPS open? ([USPS](https://about.usps.com/newsroom/national-releases/2026/0626-usps-will-be-closed-in-observance-of-independence-day-july-4.htm)). If USPS does the same, Friday, June 18, 2027 is a regular mail day; check the USPS list once it is posted. #### Is USPS open on Independence Day 2027? Independence Day 2027 falls on Sunday, July 4, 2027. The federal holiday is Monday, July 5, 2027 for most federal employees ([OPM](https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/federal-holidays/)), but USPS hadn't posted its 2027 list when we checked. When a holiday fell on a Sunday in 2021 (Independence Day), 2022 (Juneteenth), 2022 (Christmas Day) and 2023 (New Year's Day), USPS observed it on the Monday after ([Independence Day 2021 memo](https://about.usps.com/who/legal/foia/documents/delivery-operations/del-ops-independence-day-2021.pdf), [Juneteenth 2022 memo](https://about.usps.com/who/legal/foia/documents/delivery-operations/del-ops-juneteenth-day-2022.pdf), [Christmas Day 2022 memo](https://about.usps.com/who/legal/foia/documents/delivery-operations/christmas-2022-new-years-2023-letter.pdf) and [New Year's Day 2023 memo](https://about.usps.com/who/legal/foia/documents/delivery-operations/christmas-2022-new-years-2023-letter.pdf)). #### Is USPS open on Christmas Eve 2027? Christmas Day 2027 falls on Saturday, December 25, 2027. The federal holiday is Friday, December 24, 2027 for most federal employees ([OPM](https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/federal-holidays/)), but USPS hadn't posted its 2027 list when we checked. The 2027 calendar repeats 2021, when Christmas and New Year's Day also fell on Saturdays. USPS's memo then said: "Friday, December 24 and Friday, December 31: Normal (Friday) service levels will be provided in delivery operations." It also allowed earlier pickups: "All collection points with a scheduled last collection after 12:00 noon may be advanced to as early as 12:00 Noon." ([USPS memo, scanned](https://about.usps.com/who/legal/foia/documents/delivery-operations/christmas-2021-new-years-2022-letter.pdf)). The last 5 Saturday holidays (Independence Day 2020, Christmas Day 2021, New Year's Day 2022, Veterans Day 2023 and Independence Day 2026) were observed on the Saturday, and USPS's memos kept the Friday before a normal delivery day. If USPS does the same, Friday, December 24, 2027 is a regular mail day; check the USPS list once it is posted. #### Is USPS open on Friday, December 31, 2027 (New Year's Day 2028)? New Year's Day 2028 falls on Saturday, January 1, 2028. The federal holiday is Friday, December 31, 2027 for most federal employees ([OPM](https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/federal-holidays/)), but USPS hadn't posted its 2027 list when we checked. In 2021 USPS's public list showed Friday, December 31, 2021 for New Year's Day 2022, under its note: "If a holiday falls on a Saturday, for most USPS employees, the preceding Friday will be treated as a holiday for pay and leave purposes." ([archived USPS list](https://web.archive.org/web/20211213050410/https://about.usps.com/newsroom/events/)). Its operations memo still kept that Friday a delivery day: "Friday, December 24 and Friday, December 31: Normal (Friday) service levels will be provided in delivery operations." ([USPS memo, scanned](https://about.usps.com/who/legal/foia/documents/delivery-operations/christmas-2021-new-years-2022-letter.pdf)). If USPS does the same, Friday, December 31, 2027 is a regular mail day; check the USPS list once it is posted. ### General questions #### Is USPS open on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve 2026? Yes. Neither is one of the 11 USPS holidays in [ELM 518.1](https://about.usps.com/manuals/elm/html/elmc5_008.htm), so Thursday, December 24, 2026 and Thursday, December 31, 2026 are regular mail days. Some Post Offices close early: USPS hadn't posted its 2026 Christmas memo when we checked, but in 2025 its memo kept "regular delivery and collections operations" going on December 24 and let districts "permit early closure at Noon on Christmas Eve Day - December 24th and at Noon on New Year’s Eve Day – December 31st at select retail locations" ([USPS 2025 memo](https://about.usps.com/who/legal/foia/documents/delivery-operations/christmas-new-year-2025-2026-holiday-letter.pdf)). Check your own Post Office's hours for those two afternoons. #### Is the post office open the day after Thanksgiving, on Good Friday or on Election Day? Yes. USPS's holidays are the 11 days listed in [ELM 518.1](https://about.usps.com/manuals/elm/html/elmc5_008.htm), and the Friday after Thanksgiving, Good Friday and Election Day (Tuesday, November 3, 2026) are not among them. For the Friday after Thanksgiving 2025, USPS's memo said: "Return to normal service levels." ([USPS memo](https://about.usps.com/who/legal/foia/documents/delivery-operations/del-ops-thanksgiving-day-2025.pdf)). In 2026 that Friday is November 27, 2026. #### Can USPS close on a day that isn't one of its 11 holidays? Yes, rarely, as on a National Day of Mourning for a president or former president. USPS's memo for Thursday, January 9, 2025 explains that "Beginning with the death of President Kennedy in 1963, the incumbent President has issued an Executive order closing Government offices throughout the world as “a mark of respect” upon the death of each President or former President." For that day it said: "Retail Window Hours will be closed on January 9, 2025, in its entirety at all retail locations." and "There will be no regular delivery service except for Premium Priority Mail Express"; also, "There will be no scheduled collection operations." ([USPS memo](https://about.usps.com/who/legal/foia/documents/delivery-operations/del-ops-national-day-of-mourning-2025.pdf)). That memo was dated December 31, 2024, nine days ahead, so no plan built on the 11 listed holidays could have included the closure. #### What is the difference between a widely and a non-widely observed USPS holiday? USPS's operations memos sort its 11 holidays in two groups. New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day are "widely observed": "Labor Day is a widely observed holiday, which means that many businesses are closed and not producing outgoing mail." Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Juneteenth, Columbus Day and Veterans Day are "non-widely observed": "Juneteenth Day is a non-widely observed holiday, which means that many businesses are open and producing outgoing mail." On both kinds Post Offices close and regular mail isn't delivered. Collections are set holiday by holiday, not by the label: for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth and Labor Day 2026 the memos said "District Managers will coordinate with plant partners and perform full collections if cancellations are scheduled." ([Martin Luther King Jr. Day memo](https://about.usps.com/who/legal/foia/documents/delivery-operations/del-ops-mlk-jr-day-2026.pdf)), while for July 4, 2026 the memo said "There will be no regular delivery service or mail collection service." ([memo](https://about.usps.com/who/legal/foia/documents/delivery-operations/independence-day-2026.pdf)). #### Does Priority Mail Express deliver on holidays? Usually, for a fee and where USPS offers it. USPS says Priority Mail Express "delivers 7 days a week, 365 days a year (with limited exceptions)" ([USPS](https://www.usps.com/ship/mail-shipping-services.htm)) and offers "Sunday and holiday delivery available in many major markets for an additional fee" ([USPS](https://www.usps.com/ship/priority-mail-express.htm)). The fee: "For Sunday/Holiday delivery, add $12.50" ([Notice 123](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/Notice123.htm)), the same $12.50 in every archived price list since May 11, 2009. Per DMM 113.1.5, "Customers not desiring delivery on a Sunday or a holiday may avoid the premium by opting for guaranteed delivery on the subsequent delivery day." ([DMM 113](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/113.htm)). One exception in 2026: for Saturday, July 4, USPS's memo said "There will be no regular delivery service, premium express mail delivery or mail collection service" ([USPS memo](https://about.usps.com/who/legal/foia/documents/delivery-operations/independence-day-2026.pdf)). #### Does a USPS holiday count as a day in the delivery time? Not when you mail the day before it. USPS: "If you send mail on a Saturday or the day before a holiday, the Sunday or holiday is not included in the expected delivery time." ([USPS service standards](https://www.usps.com/service-standards/)). A piece with a 2-day standard mailed Tuesday, November 10, 2026, the day before Veterans Day, is expected Friday, November 13, 2026, not Thursday, November 12, 2026. A piece with a 2-day standard mailed Wednesday, November 25, 2026, the day before Thanksgiving Day, is expected Saturday, November 28, 2026, not Friday, November 27, 2026. The rule covers only the day right after mailing; USPS's own Sunday example: "If you send mail with a 3-day service standard on Friday, the expected delivery date is Monday." Whether a marketplace counts a postal holiday in your handling time is set by that marketplace's own policy, so check its seller help pages. ## How we built this Dates: the USPS 2026 holiday list on its newsroom (about.usps.com/newsroom/events), checked against Employee and Labor Relations Manual 518.1, and OPM's federal holiday schedules for 2026 to 2028. What runs on each holiday: the holiday operations memo USPS posts in its FOIA reading room for that holiday (the 2025 memo for Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas, whose 2026 memos were not posted when we checked) and USPS's national closure releases. Weekend holidays in earlier years: the same memos and archived copies of the USPS holiday list (web.archive.org, cited with the original URL). Days that are not USPS holidays (Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve, the Friday after Thanksgiving) and the January 9, 2025 National Day of Mourning closure: the USPS operations memos for those days. USPS's manual points to its operations manual and usps.com for holidays: "Information on holidays observed by the USPS can be found in the POM and online at USPS.com" ([DMM 608.3.0](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/608.htm)). The operations memos are in USPS's [FOIA reading room](https://about.usps.com/who/legal/foia/library.htm). Archived copies of USPS's holiday list are cited with the original address and the web.archive.org copy ([2020-02-21](https://web.archive.org/web/20200221052448/https://about.usps.com/newsroom/events/), [2020-12-05](https://web.archive.org/web/20201205091009/https://about.usps.com/newsroom/events/), [2021-12-13](https://web.archive.org/web/20211213050410/https://about.usps.com/newsroom/events/), [2022-12-16](https://web.archive.org/web/20221216142446/https://about.usps.com/newsroom/events/)).
