# What happens if USPS inspects a Media Mail package and it doesn't qualify?

USPS's rules: Postage due

**USPS can collect the difference in one of four ways: a payment adjustment through your PC Postage provider, returning the package to you, delivering it and collecting the postage due from your buyer, or collecting it at the counter if it's caught at drop-off.** Mailing at Media Mail prices is consent to inspection however the package is closed, and if your PC Postage provider can't take the full amount automatically, you get 14 calendar days (10 business days if notified electronically) to pay before your label printing can be suspended. You have 60 calendar days to dispute a PC Postage adjustment through the provider.

## What it costs to ship

Media Mail costs the same to every US address, with a 1 lb minimum ($4.39) and any fraction of a pound rounded up. Ground Advantage, USPS's ground package service with tracking included, is priced by weight and zone: online is USPS's commercial price for labels bought online, and the counter price is retail.

*USD, weight not over. USPS Notice 123 effective Oct 4, 2026; Ground Advantage includes USPS's temporary holiday prices, in effect until 12 a.m. CT Jan 17, 2027 (Media Mail isn't affected). Selling platforms and label services can have their own rates.*

- A 5 lb box with a non-qualifying item: $3.01 to $12.90 more by Ground Advantage online than the $7.34 paid.
- If your buyer refuses to pay, the package is returned and handed to you when you pay the deficient postage plus return postage ([DMM 604.8.1.2](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/604.htm#a_8_1_2)).

## Edge cases

- Containers like suitcases and duffel bags sent at Package Services prices may not be locked ([PS-100](https://pe.usps.com/text/csr/PS-100.htm)).
- Concealing higher-priced mail can bring a fine ([DMM 703.9.1.2](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/703.htm#a_9_1_2)); see [mixed box](https://resellerindex.com/usps/media-mail/mixed-box/).
- Pieces with insufficient postage, fewer than 10 at a time, are delivered once the addressee pays the marked charges ([DMM 604.8.1.1](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/604.htm#a_8_1_1)).

## What to do

- Ship only qualifying items and permitted enclosures by Media Mail.
- Watch your label account for adjustments and dispute within 60 days if the item qualified.

## Related questions

- [What if I ship a book and a non-media item together by Media Mail?](https://resellerindex.com/usps/media-mail/mixed-box/)

Whole box pays more. Unless the extra item is a permitted enclosure, the whole package pays the higher price, and USPS can fine concealed higher-priced mail.

- [What happens to undeliverable or refused Media Mail?](https://resellerindex.com/usps/media-mail/undeliverable-and-refused/)

Return isn't free. With no endorsement it's forwarded postage due to a new address for 12 months, or returned with return postage charged at the Media Mail price.

- [Can you send board games, puzzles or video games by Media Mail?](https://resellerindex.com/usps/media-mail/games-and-puzzles/)

No. USPS rules that games, including board games and video games, are used primarily for entertainment, and jigsaw puzzles aren't on the Media Mail list.

- [Can you ship comic books by Media Mail?](https://resellerindex.com/usps/media-mail/comic-books/)

Only with no ads. A comic needs no ads except announcements of books; an issue with other ads pays First-Class Mail or Ground Advantage prices.
