# Can I ship Media Mail in a Priority Mail box?

USPS's rules: No

**No. USPS-produced packaging, Priority Mail and Flat Rate boxes included, may be used only for the product it's made for, and USPS charges that product's price however the box is reconfigured or its markings covered.** So a book in a Priority Mail box pays Priority Mail prices, not Media Mail's $4.39 for 1 lb; ship Media Mail in your own box or mailer.

## The rule, in USPS's words

> “All USPS-produced packaging (including Flat-Rate packaging) must be used only for the applicable product (e.g., Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail).”

> “The mailer of any matter mailed in USPS-produced packaging, regardless of how the packaging is reconfigured or how markings may be obliterated, must pay the appropriate product price.”

## What it costs to ship

Media Mail costs the same to every US address, with a 1 lb minimum ($4.39) and any fraction of a pound rounded up. Ground Advantage, USPS's ground package service with tracking included, is priced by weight and zone: online is USPS's commercial price for labels bought online, and the counter price is retail.

*USD, weight not over. USPS Notice 123 effective Oct 4, 2026; Ground Advantage includes USPS's temporary holiday prices, in effect until 12 a.m. CT Jan 17, 2027 (Media Mail isn't affected). Selling platforms and label services can have their own rates.*

| Package | Media Mail (if it qualified) | Ground Advantage online, Zones 1-9 | Ground Advantage at the counter, Zones 1-9 |
| --- | ---: | ---: | ---: |
| 1 lb | $4.39 | $8.01 to $11.22 | $10.05 to $13.65 |
| 2 lb | $5.13 | $8.39 to $13.42 | $11.30 to $19.80 |
| 5 lb | $7.34 | $10.35 to $20.24 | $13.75 to $27.45 |

### Worked examples

- 2 lb of books in your own box: Media Mail, $5.13.
- The same books in a Priority Mail box: Priority Mail prices, whatever label you put on it.
- A 5 lb box in a reused retail carton: Media Mail, $7.34.

## Edge cases

- USPS-produced Ground Advantage packaging exists too, and the same rule ties it to Ground Advantage ([DMM 601.6.1](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/601.htm#a_6_1)).
- Reusing a box: USPS says to cover or black out all old logos, barcodes, shipping labels and addresses ([USPS](https://www.usps.com/ship/packages.htm)).

## What to do

- Keep free Priority Mail boxes for Priority Mail.
- Use plain boxes or mailers for Media Mail.
