# When should I file a USPS Missing Mail search instead of a claim?

File a Missing Mail search from 7 days after the mailing date when tracking has stalled or the package hasn't arrived; it works for mail with no insurance, which can't be claimed. If the package was insured, including the $100 with Priority Mail and Ground Advantage, the claim window for a lost package opens at day 15, and you can do both.

Fees from [USPS Notice 123](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/Notice123.htm) effective Oct 4, 2026 (the same since Jul 12, 2026); rules quoted from the Domestic Mail Manual and usps.com, each with its section. USPS decides every claim and refund; this is a guide to its published rules.

## Search or claim?

*From USPS's Missing Mail and claims pages and DMM 609, checked Oct 19, 2026.*

| | Missing Mail search | Insurance claim |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Purpose | USPS looks for the package | USPS pays for the loss or damage |
| Insurance needed | No | Yes (bought, or included with Priority Mail and Ground Advantage) |
| When, for a lost package | From day 7 | Day 15 to day 60 (day 7 for Priority Mail Express) |
| Outcome | If found, it's sent to the address you provide | A payment up to the coverage |

*For a package mailed Oct 1, 2026.*

| What | Earliest | Latest |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Missing Mail search | Oct 8, 2026 (day 7) | No end date listed |
| Claim for a lost insured package | Oct 16, 2026 (day 15) | Nov 30, 2026 (day 60) |

## What to include

- The sender's and the recipient's mailing addresses.
- The size and type of box or envelope.
- The tracking number, the mailing date from your receipt, or the Click-N-Ship label receipt.
- A description of the contents: what it is, brand, model, color or size.
- Pictures that could help USPS recognize the item; photos of the actual item or the listing photos.

That list is from USPS's Missing Mail page. A label printed from a selling platform still has a USPS tracking number to give.

## What happens next

USPS sends a confirmation email and periodic updates, and if it finds the package it sends it to the address you provided.

> “sometimes we cannot find missing mail items. It is also possible that your package or mail will not be recovered because it was not safe to forward.”
>

## Uninsured packages: Media Mail and First-Class Mail

> “USPS may not legally pay compensation for uninsured lost or damaged articles. If your uninsured mail is missing or delayed you may request a Missing Mail Search.”
>
> — [USPS claims page](https://www.usps.com/help/claims.htm), checked Oct 19, 2026

So for a Media Mail package with no bought coverage, the search is the only USPS route ([Media Mail tracking and insurance](https://resellerindex.com/usps/media-mail/insurance-and-tracking/)). For Priority Mail Express, USPS's Missing Mail page also points to the money-back refund ([Priority Mail Express refunds](https://resellerindex.com/usps/services/priority-mail-express-refund/)).

## Worked example: a stalled box of books

*Worked example: A 4 lb Media Mail box of books mailed Oct 1, 2026, with no tracking scans after Oct 3 and no insurance bought*

| Postage paid | $6.60 |
| --- | ---: |
| Missing Mail search, from (day 7) | Oct 8, 2026 |
| Insurance claim | Not possible: Media Mail has no included coverage |
| Had it gone Ground Advantage: claim window | Oct 16, 2026 to Nov 30, 2026 |

With the search, describe the books (titles, condition, the box) and include photos; USPS sends what it finds to the address you give.

## Questions

### Can the buyer file a Missing Mail search?

Yes. USPS's Missing Mail page is written for mail you're sending or receiving.

### Does a Missing Mail search count as a claim?

No. A claim is separate and needs insurance; if the package was insured, file the claim in its own window ([how](https://resellerindex.com/usps/services/file-a-claim/)).

### Can I file a search before day 7?

USPS says searches can be submitted starting 7 days from mailing.

## How we checked this

Fees come from [Notice 123](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/Notice123.htm) effective Oct 4, 2026, read on Oct 19, 2026 by USPS's own price code for each fee and matched to the [USPS price file](https://pe.usps.com/resources/PriceChange/Time-Limited%20OCT%202026%20Price%20Change%20-%20Notice%20123%20-%20Final.zip); earlier fees come from the same codes in the Postal Explorer archive editions back to Jul 13, 2025. Every fee on these pages is the same in the Jul 12, 2026 and Oct 4, 2026 editions: the Oct 4 holiday edition changed package postage, not extra-service fees. Rules are quoted word for word from the Domestic Mail Manual sections and usps.com pages listed below, fetched on Oct 19, 2026. Package postage in examples is USPS's own price; selling platforms and label services can charge their own.
