# “Available for Pickup”: what USPS tracking means

**“Available for Pickup” means the package is waiting at a Post Office, or another USPS pickup location, for the recipient to collect it.** USPS.com's text reads “Your item arrived at the CITY, STATE ZIP CODE post office at TIME on DATE and is ready for pickup.” and USPS's event list adds “The item may be picked up at the post office or caller or firm service location.”

Quoted from USPS's own tracking documents and help pages, checked Oct 19, 2026. This page covers: “Available for Pickup”, “Held at Post Office, At Customer Request”, “Held at Post Office, Retrieved from full parcel locker”, “Available for Pickup at Post Office”.

A package can also be there because the sender chose Hold For Pickup, which USPS offers “for Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, and USPS Ground Advantage - Retail, using USPS Click-N-Ship.” ([DMM 507.3.2.2](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/507.htm)), or because the carrier tried and left a notice ([Notice Left](https://resellerindex.com/usps/tracking/notice-left/)).

## How long USPS holds it

- **Hold For Pickup:** “If the item has not been picked up within 5 days (3 days for Priority Mail Express), the Post Office makes a second notification attempt” ([DMM 507.3.2.1](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/507.htm)), and “returns the item to the sender if not picked up within 15 days (5 days for Priority Mail Express).” “When the destination Post Office has the addressee's contact information, an email or text notice is sent that a package is available for pickup.”
- **After a notice, for accountable mail** (“Priority Mail Express, Registered Mail, Certified Mail, mail insured for more than $500.00, Adult Signature, or COD, as well as mail for which a return receipt is requested or the sender has specified restricted delivery.”): “If the piece is not called for or redelivery is not requested, the piece is returned to the sender after 15 days (5 days for Priority Mail Express, 10 days for COD)” ([DMM 508.1.1.7](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/508.htm)), “unless the sender specifies fewer days on the piece.”
- **Priority Mail Express:** “Undeliverable or unclaimed Priority Mail Express is held by the USPS for 5 calendar days before it is returned to the sender at no additional postage” ([DMM 507.1.5.5](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/507.htm)).
- **Other packages:** USPS's description of an unclaimed return mentions “the DMM stipulated hold period (typically 15 to 30 days)”. The tracking text names the return date.
- **Held at the customer's request:** “This is different from a hold mail type request in that the mail is expected to exceed the typical hold time of 30 days.” ([USPS event list](https://postalpro.usps.com/mnt/glusterfs/2026-04/PTR2%20Event%20Descriptions_April%202026_final.pdf), event 58, p. 9); ordinary Hold Mail keeps mail “held at the Post Office for not less than 3 days and not more than 30 days” ([DMM 508.11.1.1](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/508.htm)).
- **Extraordinary circumstances (event 76):** “If the item is not picked up, your item will go out for delivery as conditions permit.”
- **A hold time you choose:** “At the sender’s request, the delivery Post Office holds mail, other than Registered Mail, Insured, Certified Mail, COD, Adult Signature, and Signature Confirmation, for no fewer than 3 days or more than 30 days.” ([DMM 507.4.3.4](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/507.htm)) The sender puts the time in the return address ([DMM 507.4.3.4](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/507.htm)).

## Worked example

You ship a Priority Mail package Hold For Pickup with Click-N-Ship. It shows “Available for Pickup” on Monday, Nov 9, 2026. If nobody collects it, the Post Office makes a second notification attempt after 5 days (Saturday, Nov 14, 2026) and returns it if it isn't picked up within 15 days (Tuesday, Nov 24, 2026). As Priority Mail with no endorsement and no change-of-address order on file, the return costs you nothing (DMM 507, Exhibit 1.5.1).

## Edge cases

- **Customs duties:** “USPS will require payment of customs duty fees at the time of pickup.”
- **Media Mail and Hold For Pickup:** through Click-N-Ship the service is listed “for Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, and USPS Ground Advantage - Retail, using USPS Click-N-Ship.” ([DMM 507.3.2.2](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/507.htm)); Media Mail appears in that section only with COD service at a Post Office.
- **Moved out of a full locker:** “In order to make room for newer parcels, it is instead held at the office.”
- **Held at the customer's request after an attempt** (event 52, category “Delivery Attempt”): “The item could not be delivered because of instructions provided by the customer.”

## What to do as the seller

1. **Tell the buyer where it is.** The tracking line names the Post Office. For Hold For Pickup, “The addressee or designee must provide an acceptable primary form of identification” ([DMM 507.3.2.1](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/507.htm)).
2. **Someone else can collect it.** For a package with a notice, USPS's redelivery page says “Or you can send someone else to serve as your representative.”
3. **If nobody picks it up,** it comes back as unclaimed. For a label with no endorsement (no “Return Service Requested” or similar), the Domestic Mail Manual's rule is “Same treatment as ‘Forwarding Service Requested.’” ([DMM 507, Exhibits 1.5.1 and 1.5.4, "No Endorsement"](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/507.htm)) With no change-of-address order on file, that means for First-Class Mail, Priority Mail and Ground Advantage: “Piece returned with reason for nondelivery attached (no charge).” For Media Mail and the other Package Services: “Piece returned with reason for nondelivery attached; return postage charged at the applicable Package Services single-piece price” ([DMM 507, Exhibits 1.5.1 and 1.5.4](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/507.htm)). See [Return to Sender](https://resellerindex.com/usps/tracking/return-to-sender/).

## Questions

### How long will the Post Office hold my package?

It depends on why it's there: 15 days for Hold For Pickup (5 for Priority Mail Express), 15 days after a notice for accountable mail, and for other mail USPS's event list mentions “typically 15 to 30 days”. The tracking page shows the return date.

### Can someone else pick it up?

Yes. USPS's redelivery page says you can send a representative, and Hold For Pickup items need ID from the addressee or designee.

### Why was my package sent to the Post Office instead of delivered?

USPS's events give reasons: held at the customer's request, removed from a full parcel locker, extraordinary circumstances at the office, the sender chose Hold For Pickup, or a failed delivery attempt.

### What happens if nobody picks it up?

USPS returns it to the sender. With no endorsement and no forwarding order, First-Class Mail, Priority Mail and Ground Advantage come back at no charge; Media Mail comes back with return postage charged.

## How we checked this

The status lines, the sentences under them and their meanings are quoted from the [PTR2 Domestic Scan Events and Descriptions](https://postalpro.usps.com/mnt/glusterfs/2026-04/PTR2%20Event%20Descriptions_April%202026_final.pdf) list USPS posted on PostalPro on Apr 27, 2026, which gives, for each tracking event, the line and sentence USPS.com shows, its status category and USPS's own description. Renames come from USPS's [PTR Modernization overview](https://postalpro.usps.com/mnt/glusterfs/2026-05/USPS%20PTR%20Modernization%20Overview%20external%20version%2014.pdf); rules and deadlines from usps.com and the Domestic Mail Manual. USPS's tracking FAQ on faq.usps.com loads only with JavaScript, so it isn't quoted. We read every source on Oct 19, 2026 and say nothing about a status that USPS doesn't.
