# USPS tracking says “Delivered” but there’s no package

**“Delivered” means a USPS delivery scan recorded when and where the carrier left the package; the words after “Delivered,” name the spot, such as the mailbox, the porch, a parcel locker or a neighbor.** USPS's event list describes the plain line as “The article has been delivered and a delivery scan recorded the time and date of delivery”. It records the delivery; it doesn't say who has the package now.

Quoted from USPS's own tracking documents and help pages, checked Oct 19, 2026. This page covers: “Delivered”, “Delivered, In/At Mailbox”, “Delivered, Front Door/Porch”, “Delivered, Parcel Locker”, “Delivered, Left with Individual”, “Delivered, Front Desk/Reception/Mail Room”, “Delivered, Garage or Other Location at Address”, “Delivered, Neighbor as Requested”, “Delivered, PO Box”.

## What USPS says this status means

> “Your item was delivered at TIME on DATE in LOCATION.”

The text USPS.com shows for “Delivered”: [USPS PTR2 scan event list](https://postalpro.usps.com/mnt/glusterfs/2026-04/PTR2%20Event%20Descriptions_April%202026_final.pdf), event 01, p. 1. Checked Oct 19, 2026.

> “The article has been delivered and a delivery scan recorded the time and date of delivery”

USPS's description of “Delivered”: [USPS PTR2 scan event list](https://postalpro.usps.com/mnt/glusterfs/2026-04/PTR2%20Event%20Descriptions_April%202026_final.pdf), event 01, p. 1. Checked Oct 19, 2026.

Words in capitals (TIME, DATE, LOCATION and so on) are USPS's placeholders; the real tracking page fills them in.

Every line on this page sits under the status category “Delivered”. Delivery to an agent, such as a college, hospital or condominium office, or to the military has its own category: [Delivered to Agent](https://resellerindex.com/usps/tracking/delivered-to-agent/). In USPS's PTR2 list every line for delivery events 01 and 43 is marked “Yes” in the “Stop the Clock Event?” column: it is the kind of scan whose absence after Out for Delivery produces “Awaiting Delivery” ([Awaiting Delivery Scan](https://resellerindex.com/usps/tracking/awaiting-delivery-scan/)). The exception on this page is “Delivered to Recipient by Agent” (event 63), marked “No”; for an agent delivery, the “Yes” scan is USPS's hand-off, “Delivered to Agent for Final Delivery” (event 60).

## Where it was left: every Delivered line

| Status line on USPS.com | What USPS.com says | What USPS's event list says it is |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Delivered Delivered · event 01, p. 1 | “Your item was delivered at TIME on DATE in LOCATION.” | “The article has been delivered and a delivery scan recorded the time and date of delivery” |
| Delivered, In/At Mailbox Delivered · event 01, p. 1 | “Your item was delivered in or at the mailbox at TIME on DATE in LOCATION.” | “The item was delivered to the delivery receptacle” |
| Delivered, Front Door/Porch Delivered · event 01, p. 1 | “Your item was delivered at the front door or porch at TIME on DATE in LOCATION.” | “The item was delivered to the front door or the front porch” |
| Delivered, Parcel Locker Delivered · event 01, p. 1 | “Your item was delivered to a parcel locker at TIME on DATE in LOCATION.” | “The item was delivered to a USPS parcel locker attached to a Cluster Box Unit” |
| Delivered, Parcel Locker Delivered · event 01, p. 1 | “Your item was delivered to a parcel locker at TIME on DATE in LOCATION.” | “The item was delivered to a non-USPS parcel locker” |
| Delivered, Left with Individual Delivered · event 01, p. 1 | “Your item was delivered to an individual at the address at TIME on DATE in LOCATION.” | “The item was left with an individual at the delivery address” |
| Delivered, Front Desk/Reception/Mail Room Delivered · event 01, p. 1 | “Your item was delivered to the front desk, mail room, or reception area at TIME on DATE in LOCATION.” | “The item was delivered to the front desk or reception area of the delivery address” |
| Delivered, Garage or Other Location at Address Delivered · event 01, p. 1 | “Your item was delivered to the garage or an alternate location at the address at TIME on DATE in LOCATION.” | “The item was delivered to a location as specified” |
| Delivered, Neighbor as Requested Delivered · event 01, p. 1 | “Your item was delivered to a neighbor as requested at TIME on DATE in LOCATION.” | “The item was delivered to a neighbor as requested online by the addressee” |
| Delivered, PO Box Delivered · event 01, p. 1 | “Your item has been delivered and is available at a PO Box at TIME on DATE in LOCATION.” | “The item was delivered to a PO Box.” |

Two rows share one line. USPS's list has “Delivered, Parcel Locker” twice: once as “The item was delivered to a USPS parcel locker attached to a Cluster Box Unit” and once as “The item was delivered to a non-USPS parcel locker”. The line alone doesn't say which, so ask the buyer about both kinds of locker. And “Delivered, Neighbor as Requested” is the line for a delivery “requested online by the addressee”, not for any neighbor the carrier chose.

## Delivered at a Post Office, a locker or by an agent

*Delivery lines for pickups and for agents who hand the package on. | Status line on USPS.com | What USPS.com says | What USPS's event list says it is |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Delivered, Individual Picked Up at Postal Facility Delivered · event 01, p. 1 | “Your item was picked up at a postal facility at TIME on DATE in LOCATION.” | “The item was picked up by an authorized recipient at a postal facility.” |
| Delivered, Individual Picked Up at Post Office Delivered · event 01, p. 1 | “Your item was picked up at the post office at TIME on DATE in LOCATION.” | “The item was picked up by an authorized recipient at a post office.” |
| Delivered Delivered · event 43, p. 8 | “Your item was delivered at TIME on DATE in LOCATION.” | “The 43 event indicates that the delivery took place at a postal facility.” |
| Delivered, Smart Parcel Locker Delivered · event 01, p. 2 | “Your item was delivered to a smart parcel locker at TIME on DATE in LOCATION.” … “The recipient will receive a pickup notification email with instructions on how to access the smart parcel locker and retrieve the package.” | “This delivery event is sent by the smart locker system when the employee loads the item into the locker following a redelivery request.” |
| Picked Up, Smart Parcel Locker Delivered · event 43, p. 8 | “Your item was picked up from a smart parcel locker at TIME on DATE in LOCATION.” | “The item was picked up by the customer from a smart parcel locker.” |
| Delivered to Recipient by Agent Delivered · event 63, p. 22 | “Your item was delivered to recipient by the agent at TIME on DATE in LOCATION.” | “The agent has delivered the item to the addressee” |

A “Delivered, Smart Parcel Locker” line comes after a redelivery request: “This delivery event is sent by the smart locker system when the employee loads the item into the locker following a redelivery request.” The buyer collects it with the instructions USPS emails.

## If it says Delivered and the package isn't there

1. **Start with the place the line names.** The words after “Delivered,” are where the carrier recorded leaving it: mailbox, porch, garage, front desk, parcel locker or PO Box.
2. **Ask at the address.** Someone else may have taken it in, or a building's staff may hold it. A mail room or front desk delivery is under the same Delivered category.
3. **Search through USPS from day 7.** USPS's Missing Mail page opens with “If you think your package or mail is lost or delayed, follow these steps to help us find your mail.” ([USPS, Find Missing Mail](https://www.usps.com/help/missing-mail.htm), "Find Missing Mail", introduction) “Missing Mail search requests can be submitted starting 7 days from mailing.” ([USPS, Find Missing Mail](https://www.usps.com/help/missing-mail.htm), "How to Start Your Search", step 2) Start it on [USPS's Missing Mail form](https://missingmail.usps.com/).
4. **If it was insured:** “If your item does not arrive at all, file a claim in the time period for the service you used.” ([USPS, File a Claim](https://www.usps.com/help/claims.htm), "Step 1: Check Filing Periods") USPS's claim page gives a filing window for lost insured mail by service: Priority Mail Express after 7 and before 60 days from mailing; Priority Mail after 15 and before 60 days from mailing; USPS Ground Advantage after 15 and before 60 days from mailing ([USPS, File a Claim](https://www.usps.com/help/claims.htm)). For uninsured mail, “USPS may not legally pay compensation for uninsured lost or damaged articles.”
5. **If you think it was stolen:** that is for the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. Its report page lists “Report suspected mail theft, and other mail-related crimes, tips or incidents:” with an online form ([report.uspis.gov](https://report.uspis.gov/)) and a phone line: “Or call USPIS: 1-877-876-2455” ([USPIS, Report a Crime](https://www.uspis.gov/report), "Mail Theft"). For a package that is only late or lost, the same page says “For delivery delays or service issues, visit the U.S. POSTAL SERVICE HELP PAGE.”

## Lowering the risk on the next order

- **Signature service:** “When mailing something important, consider requesting Signature Confirmation for the intended recipient.” ([USPIS, Mail & Package Theft](https://www.uspis.gov/tips-prevention/mail-theft), "Protect Yourself") With a signature required and nobody there, USPS leaves a notice instead: “Notice Left (No Authorized Recipient Available)”, “The item could not be delivered because a signature was required”.
- **Hold For Pickup:** “When shipping packages, use the Hold for PickUp option, and the recipients can collect the package at their local Post Office.” ([USPIS, Mail & Package Theft](https://www.uspis.gov/tips-prevention/mail-theft), "Protect Yourself") How long the Post Office keeps it: [Available for Pickup](https://resellerindex.com/usps/tracking/available-for-pickup/).
- **For buyers:** “Try not to leave letters and packages in your mailbox or at your door for any length of time.” ([USPIS, Mail & Package Theft](https://www.uspis.gov/tips-prevention/mail-theft), "Protect Yourself")

## Worked example

You mail a Ground Advantage package on Monday, Nov 2, 2026. Tracking shows “Delivered, In/At Mailbox” at 2:14 PM on Thursday, Nov 5, 2026, and the buyer writes that it isn't there.

- The line names the mailbox, so that is where the carrier recorded leaving it.
- On a Mercari order, Mercari tells the buyer to contact it within 72 hours of the delivery scan: by 2:14 PM on Sunday, Nov 8, 2026. Posh Protect also gives buyers 72 hours after delivery.
- A Missing Mail search can start on Monday, Nov 9, 2026, day 7 from mailing.
- If you insured it, the Ground Advantage claim window for an item that doesn't arrive is after day 15 (Nov 17, 2026) and before day 60 (Jan 1, 2027).

## Edge cases

- **“Delivered, To Original Sender”** is your own return arriving back: “The tracking system appends this nomenclature to the delivery event when a determination has been made that the delivery is to the sender (as opposed to the recipient).” See [Return to Sender](https://resellerindex.com/usps/tracking/return-to-sender/).
- **“Delivered, PO Box”** means “Your item has been delivered and is available at a PO Box at TIME on DATE in LOCATION.” The buyer collects it from the box.
- **“Delivered”** can be a pickup: “The 43 event indicates that the delivery took place at a postal facility.”
- **The wording can differ slightly.** USPS's September 2026 known-issues list includes “Incorrect Event Scripting, including event codes 01, 03, 06, 09, 10, 14, 32, 44, 54, 73, CI, OF, TL, VM, VN, VR, Shipping Partner events, RTS events” ([USPS PTR2 known-issues list (v13)](https://postalpro.usps.com/mnt/glusterfs/2026-09/USPS%20PTR2%20API%20Known%20Issues%20v13.pdf), section 2.2, "API Discrepancies"); code 01 is the Delivered event.

## What to do as the seller

1. **Read the words after “Delivered,”** and send them to the buyer with the date and time; that spot is the first place to look.
2. **Watch the platform's clock.** Mercari and Poshmark count their 72 hours from delivery (below); a buyer who waits too long can lose the chance of a refund.
3. **From 7 days after mailing:** “Missing Mail search requests can be submitted starting 7 days from mailing.” ([USPS, Find Missing Mail](https://www.usps.com/help/missing-mail.htm), "How to Start Your Search", step 2) Start it on [USPS's Missing Mail form](https://missingmail.usps.com/).
4. **Suspected theft:** report it to the Postal Inspection Service at [report.uspis.gov](https://report.uspis.gov/) or **1-877-876-2455**.
5. **Questions about the scan:** USPS's tracking line is **1-800-222-1811** ([DMM 503.1.8](https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/503.htm)); USPS says its agents see the same tracking information you do ([USPS, Contact Us](https://www.usps.com/help/contact-us.htm)).

## On selling platforms

Mercari's page for “tracking says your item was delivered but you haven't received it” starts with “first check around the delivery location.” Its checklist: “Look around your property, including the porch, side door, garage, mailbox, mailroom, or other common delivery areas.” “Ask neighbors if the package was delivered nearby by mistake.” “Check with household members, roommates, building staff, or anyone else who may have accepted the package.” “Contact the carrier to ask where the package was delivered.” For USPS packages it adds that buyers “may be able to ask your local Post Office to check delivery details, including GPS scan information, delivery photos when available”. Then: “If you still can't find the package, contact Mercari within 72 hours of the delivery scan.” ([Mercari, delayed, missing or returned packages](https://www.mercari.com/us/help_center/article/6001/), "Tracking says delivered, but item not received") “This is important because once a transaction is completed, all sales are final and Mercari may no longer be able to process a refund.” “After you contact Mercari, we may pause the transaction while we investigate with the carrier.”

Poshmark's Posh Protect: “you have 72 hours after delivery (as determined by the tracking information on the shipping label) to open a return case” ([Poshmark, Posh Protect](https://poshmark.com/posh_protect), "Refund Policy"), and “If no return case is opened within 3 days of delivery, payment will be automatically released to the seller.”

From each platform's own help pages, checked Oct 19, 2026. Rules differ by platform and change; check the platform's page before you act.

## Questions

### Does “Delivered” mean the buyer has the package?

It means a delivery scan was recorded. USPS's description: “The article has been delivered and a delivery scan recorded the time and date of delivery”. It doesn't say who has the package now.

### What does “Delivered, In/At Mailbox” mean?

“Your item was delivered in or at the mailbox at TIME on DATE in LOCATION.” USPS's description: “The item was delivered to the delivery receptacle”.

### What does “Delivered, Parcel Locker” mean?

USPS uses the line for two kinds of locker: “The item was delivered to a USPS parcel locker attached to a Cluster Box Unit” or “The item was delivered to a non-USPS parcel locker”.

### What does “Delivered, Front Desk/Reception/Mail Room” mean?

“The item was delivered to the front desk or reception area of the delivery address”. It is a delivery to the address, under “Delivered”; a handoff to an agent such as a college or condo office shows as [Delivered to Agent](https://resellerindex.com/usps/tracking/delivered-to-agent/).

### Tracking says delivered but the package was stolen. Who do I tell?

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service. Its report page lists “Report suspected mail theft, and other mail-related crimes, tips or incidents:” through [report.uspis.gov](https://report.uspis.gov/), or by phone at **1-877-876-2455**.

### How long should the buyer wait before reporting it?

USPS's pages don't give a waiting time for a Delivered package. Mercari's delayed-package help says “Wait up to 48 hours, since some packages may show as delivered while still in transit.” It also asks buyers to contact Mercari “within 72 hours of the delivery scan”. USPS's Missing Mail search opens 7 days from mailing.

USPS handed it to someone who takes mail for the address, not to the addressee.

- [Awaiting Delivery Scan](https://resellerindex.com/usps/tracking/awaiting-delivery-scan/)

It went out for delivery, but no delivery or notice scan followed; USPS usually posts the line that evening.

## How we checked this

The status lines, the sentences under them and their meanings are quoted from the [PTR2 Domestic Scan Events and Descriptions](https://postalpro.usps.com/mnt/glusterfs/2026-04/PTR2%20Event%20Descriptions_April%202026_final.pdf) list USPS posted on PostalPro on Apr 27, 2026, which gives, for each tracking event, the line and sentence USPS.com shows, its status category and USPS's own description. Renames come from USPS's [PTR Modernization overview](https://postalpro.usps.com/mnt/glusterfs/2026-05/USPS%20PTR%20Modernization%20Overview%20external%20version%2014.pdf); rules and deadlines from usps.com and the Domestic Mail Manual. USPS's tracking FAQ on faq.usps.com loads only with JavaScript, so it isn't quoted. We read every source on Oct 19, 2026 and say nothing about a status that USPS doesn't.
