USPS tracking “Alert”: every Alert status, in USPS’s words
“Alert” is not one problem: it is the status category USPS uses for many different events, from a refused or returned package to a weather delay, unpaid postage or a missing-mail search. USPS's April 2026 PTR2 list files 49 of its 181 event rows under Alert; the line under “Alert” names the event, and the tables below say what USPS says each one means.
Quoted from USPS's own tracking documents and help pages, checked . This page covers: “Alert”, “Unpaid postage, item will not be delivered”, “Delayed for postage assessment”, “Item Overweight, Pick up at Facility”, “Seized by Law Enforcement”, “Contact Customer Care”, “Tracking details unavailable”, “Processing Exception, Other Delay”.
Postage problems
| Status line on USPS.com | What USPS.com says | What USPS's event list says it is |
|---|---|---|
| Unpaid postage, item will not be delivered Alert · event F4, p. 14 | “The package associated with this tracking number did not have proper postage applied and will not be delivered.” … “You are encouraged to contact the sender/merchant to seek reshipment, refund or other available recourse.” | “it will now use a specific event (F4) to signal the presence of unpaid postage.” |
| Unpaid postage, item will not be delivered Alert · event F3, p. 14 | “The package associated with this tracking number did not have proper postage applied and will not be delivered.” | “it will now use a specific event (F3) to signal the presence of counterfeit postage.” |
| Delayed for postage assessment, held awaiting payment Alert · event F7, p. 15 | “USPS has not received a postage payment for your item. Note that unpaid postage (F4) and counterfeit postage (F3) show the same USPS.com line and text. When postage is short, the Domestic Mail Manual lists what USPS may do: “For mailpieces with a detected postage discrepancy when postage is due, corrective measures may include one of the following:” (DMM 604.4.4.3)
- “A payment adjustment from the customer, facilitated by the PES provider in the amount equivalent to the postage due, described in 4.4.4.”
- “Returning the mailpiece to the sender.”
- “Delivering the mailpiece to the addressee and collecting the deficiency as postage due.”
- “If identified at the time of induction, collecting the postage due from the customer at the retail location.”
For labels from PC Postage services: “PC Postage customer discrepancies may be resolved via an automated payment adjustment from the customer when possible” (DMM 604.4.4.4). “Customers wishing to dispute postage discrepancies must do so electronically through the PES provider within 60 calendar days” (DMM 604.4.4.5).

| Missing Mail Search Request Closed Alert · event VO, p. 21 | (no text quoted) | “This event indicates that the MRC has closed the missing mail search request.” |
USPS's Oct 13, 2026 PTR2 release notes include a fix for the search ID on the first of these: “Display the MRC ID for VM events.” (USPS PTR2 release notes, Oct 13, 2026, item D-121126, "PTR2 does not display MRC ID for VM events") “Missing Mail search requests can be submitted starting 7 days from mailing.” (USPS, Find Missing Mail, "How to Start Your Search", step 2) USPS asks for the sender's and recipient's addresses, the size and type of box or envelope, the tracking number or mailing receipt, a description of what's inside and photos that would help them recognize it; start it on USPS's Missing Mail form. “Please note, sometimes we cannot find missing mail items.”
Worked example
You buy a 2 lb Media Mail label ($5.13) through a PC Postage service for a box that weighs 3 lb, which takes the 3 lb price ($5.86): $0.73 short at the prices in USPS Notice 123 effective October 4, 2026. If USPS's checks find the difference, the manual's options include a payment adjustment of $0.73 through the PC Postage provider, returning the package to you, or delivering it and collecting $0.73 from the buyer as postage due. A dispute goes through the PC Postage provider within 60 calendar days.
Edge cases
- “Contact Customer Care at 1-800-275-8777” is manual: “This event is manually applied in instances where packages may not be retrievable, or may be detained for long periods of time, as in the case of a USPS trailer or vehicle fire.”
- “Tracking details unavailable”: “Due to a USPS system issue, duplicate label numbers were produced.” USPS's text adds “USPS still intends to deliver your item.”
- Seized or held for a mailability check: USPS's text says “Please contact the US Postal Inspection Service for further information.”
- “Delayed for postage assessment” can also appear under On the Way: “Your item has potentially been delayed due to a required postage assessment. As of DATE at TIME, it is currently in transit to the destination.”
- A text or email about a failed delivery isn't a tracking Alert. The Postal Inspection Service says “Be aware that the U.S. Postal Service does not notify customers of package delivery attempts, or request personal information, via email.” (USPIS, Fake USPS Emails, "Protect Yourself From Email Scams") For suspicious texts or emails about a package delivery failure: “Forward the text or email to spam@uspis.gov”, then “Delete the text or email” (USPIS, Report a Crime, "Scam Emails/Texts"). That doesn't make every USPS message fake: USPS's PTR2 known-issues list names “Notifications (email and text message)” among the ways customers get tracking data (USPS PTR2 known-issues list (v13), section 1, "Overview"). Either way, check the tracking number on USPS.com yourself instead of following a link.
What to do as the seller
- Read the line under “Alert” and find it in the tables above; many Alert lines are delays or returns, not losses.
- Postage alerts: check the weight and size you paid for against the package, and the label service's account for an adjustment.
- Pick-up alerts: the facility named in the text holds the item for the shipper.
- To ask USPS about a tracking number, call 1-800-222-1811 (the number in DMM 503.1.8); the Customer Care Center is 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777), Monday to Friday 8 AM to 8:30 PM ET; Saturday 8 AM to 6 PM ET (USPS, Contact Us). Before you call: “The tracking information available to customer service representatives is the same information you will see on USPS Tracking.”
Questions
Is a USPS tracking Alert bad?
It depends on the line under it. USPS uses the Alert category for delays and returns as well as for problems like unpaid postage.
What does “Unpaid postage, item will not be delivered” mean?
USPS's text: “The package associated with this tracking number did not have proper postage applied and will not be delivered.” The same text appears for counterfeit postage (event F3).
What does “Delayed for postage assessment, held awaiting payment” mean?
“USPS has not received a postage payment for your item. As of DATE at TIME, it is being held awaiting payment and cannot be processed.” “If the postage is received, the package will be delivered to the recipient; otherwise the package will be considered Postal Service property under USPS regulations and will not be delivered.”
What does “Item Overweight, Pick up at Facility” mean?
“The package is scanned as overweight when USPS detects it in the network. The shipper must pick up the item.”
How we checked this
The status lines, the sentences under them and their meanings are quoted from the PTR2 Domestic Scan Events and Descriptions list USPS posted on PostalPro on Apr 27, 2026, which gives, for each tracking event, the line and sentence USPS.com shows, its status category and USPS's own description. Renames come from USPS's PTR Modernization overview; rules and deadlines from usps.com and the Domestic Mail Manual. USPS's tracking FAQ on faq.usps.com loads only with JavaScript, so it isn't quoted. We read every source on Oct 19, 2026 and say nothing about a status that USPS doesn't.
