USPS price increase 2027: what's known as of Oct 14, 2026

USPS has not filed January 2027 prices as of Oct 14, 2026, but it told the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) on Jul 16, 2026 that it wants to move its yearly stamp and Media Mail increase to January 2027, and the PRC said it may file in October 2026 (Order No. 9696). Two things are already set. The temporary 8% and holiday increases on Ground Advantage, Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express and Parcel Select both end at 12 a.m. CT on Jan 17, 2027 (USPS, Mar 25 and Aug 25, 2026). And in a January 2027 increase, the most USPS can raise stamps (First-Class Mail) and Media Mail (Package Services) is 2.105% on average for each class (PRC, Oct 14, 2026).

Today: Media Mail 1 lb $4.39, a Forever stamp 82¢, and a 1 lb commercial Ground Advantage label to Zone 4 $8.55, of which $0.40 is the holiday add-on.

Both temporary increases end at the same moment, 12 a.m. Central time on Jan 17, 2027. Each covers Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, USPS Ground Advantage and Parcel Select, and USPS said no other products were affected, so Media Mail and stamps were never part of them.

What replaces them isn't public. USPS hasn't published Ground Advantage or Priority Mail prices for Jan 17, 2027 onward. When it announced the 8%, USPS said that at the end date it "can determine if a different long-term approach is needed" (Mar 25, 2026). So today's prices won't necessarily fall by the holiday add-on plus 8%.

The part known to the cent is the holiday add-on: $0.40 on a 1 lb commercial label to Zones 1-4 and $0.55 to Zones 5-9, the gap between "Price now" and "Price before" in the table above. Every weight band is on the USPS holiday prices page.

These are competitive products, so the PRC cap below doesn't apply to them. Published commercial Ground Advantage prices changed in 4 Notice 123 editions in 2026 (Jan 18, Apr 26, Jul 12 and Oct 4).

Capped: stamps and Media Mail can rise 2.105% on average

Stamps and Media Mail are market-dominant mail, priced under a limit the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) sets for each class. On Jul 16, 2026, USPS asked the PRC to let it count estimated fiscal 2026 density rate authority so it could "transition to a January rate change cycle in 2027," moving its yearly stamp and Media Mail increase to January 2027. The PRC denied that on Aug 21, 2026 (Order No. 9696) but said USPS may still file in October 2026 for January 2027 prices, without the fiscal 2026 density authority it asked for.

The PRC's rate-authority table, last updated Oct 14, 2026, puts the most USPS can raise at 2.105% for First-Class Mail and for Package Services, the class that holds Media Mail and Library Mail (DMM 173). For both classes, all of it is inflation-based (CPI) authority, with nothing from density or banked authority. The PRC updates the table as new inflation data come in, so the figure can change before USPS files.

Package ServicesMedia Mail, Library Mail2.105%0.000%0.000%2.105%

The limit is an average across a whole class. USPS sets each price inside it, and single prices can rise more or less than the average. In the July 12, 2026 change, prices across all mailing services rose about 4.8% on average (USPS, Apr 9, 2026), yet Media Mail went down at all 4 weights we track: 1 lb from $4.47 to $4.39. That 4.8% is USPS's figure for all mailing services, not the Package Services average, but it shows how far one price can sit from an average.

How much of the limit USPS will use isn't known. Its own rate schedule, filed with the PRC on Dec 29, 2025, says each class's increase "may require applying most or all pricing authority available" (USPS schedule). That schedule was filed before the once-per-fiscal-year rule below and still planned changes every January and July.

For scale only, not a forecast, here is 2.105% of today's prices:

2.105% = the PRC's class-average limit for a January 2027 filing (Oct 14, 2026). Prices: Notice 123, effective Oct 4, 2026. If you pay the postage, the dollar effect is the same on a $10, $25 or $50 sale.

One stamp and Media Mail increase per fiscal year

A PRC rule (Order No. 9426, Federal Register, Jan 16, 2026) bars USPS from raising market-dominant prices more than once per fiscal year from Mar 1, 2026 through Sep 30, 2030. Filings that only cut prices, and de minimis increases, don't count.

USPS's fiscal 2027 runs Oct 1, 2026 to Sep 30, 2027. The last stamp increase, on Jul 12, 2026, fell in fiscal 2026, so one increase is available in fiscal 2027. If USPS uses it in January 2027, a second increase can't come in the same fiscal year, which ends Sep 30, 2027. A second increase in calendar 2027 could come only on or after Oct 1, 2027, the start of fiscal 2028. The rule doesn't apply to Ground Advantage and Priority Mail.

How much notice USPS gave in 2026

Order No. 9696 says USPS may file in October 2026 for January 2027 prices, and USPS's Dec 29, 2025 rate schedule says January changes are filed "the preceding October" (USPS schedule). For each 2026 change, this is the time between USPS's announcement and the new prices.

Common questions

Is USPS raising prices in January 2027?

USPS says it wants to, but nothing has been filed as of Oct 14, 2026. On Jul 16, 2026, USPS told the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) it wants to move its yearly stamp and Media Mail increase to January 2027 ("transition to a January rate change cycle in 2027"), subject to its Governors' approval. PRC Order No. 9696 lets it file in October 2026, and the most it can raise First-Class Mail (stamps) or Package Services (Media Mail) is 2.105% on average per class. Already set: the temporary 8% and holiday increases on Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, USPS Ground Advantage and Parcel Select end at 12 a.m. CT on Jan 17, 2027. USPS hasn't published the prices for those services that apply after that.

Will the Forever stamp go up in 2027?

It costs 82¢ now, since Jul 12, 2026, and no 2027 stamp price has been filed. USPS has told the Postal Regulatory Commission it wants a January 2027 price change, the PRC said it may file in October 2026, and the most it can raise First-Class Mail is 2.105% on average across the class. That is about 1.7¢ on an 82¢ stamp, but USPS sets each price, and single prices can move more or less than the class average.

How much will Media Mail cost in 2027?

Until USPS files new prices, Media Mail stays at $4.39 for 1 lb, $5.13 for 2 lb, $7.34 for 5 lb and $11.02 for 10 lb. Media Mail is in Package Services, whose average increase for a January 2027 filing is capped at 2.105%. In July 2026 Media Mail went down while prices across all mailing services rose about 4.8% on average, so an average increase doesn't tell you the Media Mail price.

Will Ground Advantage get cheaper on Jan 17, 2027?

The holiday add-on ($0.40 on a 1 lb commercial label to Zones 1-4, $0.55 to Zones 5-9) and the 8% increase both end at 12 a.m. CT on Jan 17, 2027. USPS hasn't published the prices that apply from that date. It said that at that point it "can determine if a different long-term approach is needed," so a lower price isn't guaranteed.

Can USPS raise stamp and Media Mail prices twice in 2027?

Not twice in one fiscal year. A PRC rule (Order No. 9426) allows one market-dominant price increase per fiscal year from Mar 1, 2026 through Sep 30, 2030; stamps and Media Mail are market-dominant, and price cuts and de minimis increases don't count. Fiscal 2027 runs Oct 1, 2026 to Sep 30, 2027, so a January 2027 increase and a July 2027 increase would fall in the same fiscal year. A second increase in calendar 2027 could come only on or after Oct 1, 2027, the start of fiscal 2028.

When will USPS announce 2027 prices?

No filing date has been announced. On Jul 16, 2026, USPS told the PRC it wants to "transition to a January rate change cycle in 2027," and PRC Order No. 9696 says it may file in October 2026 for January 2027 prices. USPS's own rate schedule, filed with the PRC on Dec 29, 2025, says January changes are filed "the preceding October"; it predates the once-per-fiscal-year rule. In 2026, USPS announced its July mailing increase 94 days ahead and its package changes 32 to 62 days ahead.

USPS may raise stamp and Media Mail prices in January 2027, by up to 2.105% on average per class

On July 16, 2026, USPS asked the Postal Regulatory Commission to let it count estimated fiscal 2026 density rate authority so it could move its yearly mailing price increase to January 2027. The PRC denied the request on Aug. 21, 2026 (Order No. 9696) but said USPS may still file in October 2026 for a January 2027 increase. The PRC's Oct. 14, 2026 rate-authority table puts the most USPS can raise First-Class Mail and Package Services (which includes Media Mail) at 2.105% on average.
