The rules, in Stripe's words
"Payment Links are included in Stripe's integrated pricing and let you accept credit cards, debit cards, mobile wallets and more."
The Payment Links page puts the price at "Starts at" 2.9% + $0.30 per successful charge, the same as any domestic card payment. A link you text a buyer costs $1.03 on $25.
"2.9% + 30¢ per successful transaction for domestic cards"
That is the base for an online card payment. Typed in by hand, the same card is 3.4% + $0.30; from abroad, add 1.5%.
"The payment processing, Connect and currency conversion fees from the original transaction are not returned."
Refunding a card payment costs nothing extra, but the $1.03 you paid on a $25 sale stays paid. Stripe's FAQ adds that refunds may carry fees when bank transfers are used.
"You get this fee back for won disputes."
Stripe charges $15.00 for every dispute you receive and $15.00 more for each one you respond to manually. Win, and you get the second fee back; lose, and a $25 sale costs you the $25 plus $30.00. Stripe adds that in rare cases network fees also apply.
Stripe fees on a $10, $25, $50, $100 and $200 sale
Each cell is the fee, then what you keep before shipping costs. Charge shipping on the same payment and the fee is on that too.

Edge cases that change the fee
- Card typed in by hand: 3.4% + $0.30 (2.9% + 0.5%), $3.70 on $100.
- Invoice instead of a link: Stripe Invoicing Starter adds 0.4% per paid invoice, so a card payment on a Stripe invoice is 3.3% + $0.30: $3.60 on $100 against $3.20 by payment link. A receipt-style invoice after a link payment (post-payment invoice, optional) is 0.4% capped at $2.00: $0.40 on $100.
- International card or currency conversion: add 1.5% and 1%. A $100 payment with both costs $5.70. With Adaptive Pricing, Stripe shows the buyer prices in their currency and says customers see a conversion fee starting at 2%; that one is the buyer's.
- Tap to Pay on a phone, or a reader: Tap to Pay is the Terminal rate plus $0.10 per authorization, $0.83 on a $25 sale, and Stripe says it works on compatible iPhone or Android devices without additional hardware. The 2.7% + $0.05 rate with a card reader means buying one; Stripe's list starts at $59.00 for the Stripe Reader M2.
- ACH Direct Debit: 0.8%, $5.00 cap, so $5.00 on a $1,000 sale.
- Klarna: 5.99% + $0.30, $12.28 on $200.
- Smart Disputes (optional): Stripe lists 30% of the disputed amount for each dispute it wins for you, on top of the dispute received fee.
- Getting the money out: payouts on Stripe's standard schedule are free; an Instant Payout costs 1.5%, $0.50 min, so $0.50 on $25 and $1.50 on $100.
What to do
- Send a Payment Link instead of keying in the buyer's card: 2.9% + $0.30 instead of 3.4% + $0.30.
- Price the fee in: to keep $100 after a card payment, charge $103.30.
- Answer disputes with tracking and the buyer's messages; the $15.00 countered fee comes back if you win.
- Use standard payouts unless you need the money today.
Form 1099-K
The IRS says: "If your customers or clients pay you directly by credit, debit or gift card, you'll get a Form 1099-K from your payment card processor no matter how many payments you got or how much they were for." Payment apps and online marketplaces work differently: "A payment app or online marketplace is required to send you a Form 1099-K if the payments you received for goods or services total over $20,000 in more than 200 transactions." (IRS: Understanding your Form 1099-K, Page Last Reviewed or Updated: 28-Jun-2026).
The IRS adds: "Whether or not you receive a Form 1099-K, you must still report any income on your tax return." and "Use Form 1099-K with other records to help you figure and report your taxable income when you file your tax return."
