How does USPS Hold Mail work for a seller going on vacation?

USPS Hold Mail is free and holds everything addressed to you, including packages and accountable mail such as buyer returns, for 3 to 30 days; request it online up to 30 days ahead, or by 2 a.m. Central Time for it to start that day. When it ends, pick the mail up or have it delivered, and collect it within 10 days or USPS returns it to the senders or destroys it.

Fees from USPS Notice 123 effective Oct 4, 2026 (the same since Jul 12, 2026); rules quoted from the Domestic Mail Manual and usps.com, each with its section. USPS decides every claim and refund; this is a guide to its published rules.

The rules

“the option to have all mail, including accountable mail, for an eligible address held at the Post Office for not less than 3 days and not more than 30 days. There is no fee for this optional service.”

“Online Hold Mail service requests submitted before 2:00 a.m. (Central Time) may begin on the same business day.”

“You can make your request up to 30 days in advance or as early as the next scheduled delivery day.”

USPS's Hold Mail page gives the same cutoff as 3 a.m. Eastern, 2 a.m. Central or midnight Pacific, Monday to Saturday.

How to request it

  • Online at usps.com: sign in to a USPS.com account and verify your identity once for your address (DMM 508.11.2.1 and USPS's Hold Mail page).
  • On PS Form 8076 at your Post Office, handed to your carrier, or mailed to the Post Office; it must be accepted by the Post Office's closing time to start the next delivery day (508.11.2.2).
  • By phone to the Customer Care Center at 1-800-ASK-USPS (508.11.2.3).
  • You get a confirmation number online or by phone; keep it to change or cancel the hold without a trip to the Post Office (508.11.2.4 and 11.3).
  • Someone you authorize can set it up if you give them the details USPS needs (508.11.1.2).

When the hold ends

  • Pick it up at the Post Office with ID; delivery resumes the next delivery day.
  • Or have the carrier deliver it on the end date; only what fits in your mailbox comes, with a PS Form 3849 notice for the rest.

“If the accumulated mail, including accountable mail, is not picked up within the 10-day period, it will be returned to the sender or securely destructed.”

What it means for your returns and orders

  • Buyer returns and anything that needs a signature are held with the rest: the rule covers all mail, including accountable mail.
  • A return left uncollected 10 days after the hold ends can go back to its sender, the buyer.
  • Hold Mail covers mail coming to your address. It does nothing to your listings, so set your own handling times or away settings on each platform you sell on.
  • Planning to keep shipping while away? A carrier pickup is a separate request.

Worked example: two weeks away

Worked example: A seller away Dec 1 to Dec 14, 2026, expecting buyer returns
Hold Mail feeNone
Length14 days (3 to 30 allowed)
Same-day startRequest online before 2 a.m. Central on Dec 1
Returns arriving meanwhileHeld with the rest, signature items included
Collect the held mail byDec 24, 2026

Away six weeks instead? The 30-day limit doesn't stretch; see the forwarding option below.

Away more than 30 days

“To hold your mail longer or to reroute your mail, please sign up for a forwarding service.”

Premium Forwarding Service Residential costs $26.40 to enroll online ($28.70 at a Post Office) plus $29.70 per weekly shipment (Notice 123); six weekly shipments would be $204.60 with online enrollment. A change of address works differently:

“When a COA order is requested with an active Hold Mail service request, the Hold Mail service request is cancelled and all held mail is forwarded as specified in the COA order.”

How we checked this

Fees come from Notice 123 effective Oct 4, 2026, read on Oct 19, 2026 by USPS's own price code for each fee and matched to the USPS price file; earlier fees come from the same codes in the Postal Explorer archive editions back to Jul 13, 2025. Every fee on these pages is the same in the Jul 12, 2026 and Oct 4, 2026 editions: the Oct 4 holiday edition changed package postage, not extra-service fees. Rules are quoted word for word from the Domestic Mail Manual sections and usps.com pages listed below, fetched on Oct 19, 2026. Package postage in examples is USPS's own price; selling platforms and label services can charge their own.
