Can I ship a package to a Post Office for the buyer to pick up?

Yes. USPS Hold For Pickup has no extra charge: choose it when you buy a Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail or Ground Advantage label in Click-N-Ship, and USPS holds the package at the Post Office you name, notifies the buyer when it has their email or phone number, and releases it to them or their designee against photo ID. If nobody collects it within 15 days (5 for Priority Mail Express), it comes back to you.

Fees from USPS Notice 123 effective Oct 4, 2026 (the same since Jul 12, 2026); rules quoted from the Domestic Mail Manual and usps.com, each with its section. USPS decides every claim and refund; this is a guide to its published rules.

The rules

“allows mailpieces to be held at a designated Post Office location for pick up by a specified addressee or designee.”

“The addressee or designee must provide an acceptable primary form of identification as specified under 608.10.3.”

DMM 507.3.2.1 also says USPS emails or texts the addressee when the Post Office has their contact information, makes a second notice if the package isn't picked up within 5 days (3 for Priority Mail Express), and “returns the item to the sender if not picked up within 15 days (5 days for Priority Mail Express).” (DMM 507.3.2.1)

“USPS will hold packages for up to 15 days, depending on the service selected (5 days for Priority Mail Express®).”

“This service provides the shipper with tracking information, including the date and time that the addressee took possession of the item.”

Which labels can use it

DMM 507.3.1.1, 3.2.2 and 3.2.4, checked Oct 19, 2026. Fee: USPS's extra services page lists Hold For Pickup as no charge.

“for Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, and USPS Ground Advantage – Retail, using USPS Click-N-Ship.”

Postage for a Hold For Pickup label can be paid through Click-N-Ship, as a registered user of a USPS-approved PC Postage product, by permit imprint, or with an approved postage meter and a Hold For Pickup label (DMM 507.3.1.1). Whether a particular label service offers the option is up to that service.

Extra services you can add

DMM 507.3.2.5 allows Hold For Pickup with USPS Tracking, insurance, Signature Confirmation, Adult Signature Required and Adult Signature Restricted Delivery, COD and Package Intercept. The pickup itself already needs ID:

“The addressee must show an acceptable primary ID with a clear photo.”

For Priority Mail Express, the package is “available for pickup by the addressee at the destination facility by 6 p.m. of the scheduled delivery day that the destination office is open for retail business.” (DMM 113.4.2.4)

When it makes sense for a seller

  • The buyer is rarely home for a package that needs a signature (what happens otherwise).
  • A valuable item you'd rather not leave on a doorstep; the tracking shows when the buyer took it.
  • An age-restricted item: add Adult Signature, and the clerk checks ID at the counter.
  • Already shipped? Package Intercept can send it to the destination Post Office as Hold For Pickup instead, for $19.45 if USPS catches it, plus new postage.

Agree on the Post Office with the buyer first, and give them the tracking number. A Hold For Pickup label carries the buyer's name and the designated Post Office's address (DMM 507.3.3).

Worked example

Worked example: A 3 lb Ground Advantage package to Zone 7, held at the buyer's Post Office
Postage (USPS commercial price now, holiday prices included)$14.91
Hold For PickupNo charge
Signature Confirmation, optional$4.15
Same package redirected there later with Package Intercept$19.45 plus the Ground Advantage commercial price for the new label

Choosing Hold For Pickup on the original label is the cheap way; a later redirect to Hold For Pickup is relabeled and charged the original commercial product price again (DMM 507.5.2.1).

Questions

Does USPS Hold For Pickup cost extra?

No. USPS's extra services page lists Hold For Pickup as no charge; you pay the label's postage and any extra services you add.

Can I use Hold For Pickup with Media Mail?

Only with COD service, presented at a retail Post Office (DMM 507.3.2.2). For other Media Mail shipments, it isn't offered.

Can someone else pick up a Hold For Pickup package?

Yes, a designee, with an acceptable primary form of photo ID (DMM 507.3.2.1).

What happens if the buyer never picks it up?

The Post Office sends a second notice after 5 days (3 for Priority Mail Express) and returns the package to you if it isn't picked up within 15 days (5 for Priority Mail Express) (DMM 507.3.2.1).

Is Hold For Pickup the same as Hold Mail?

No. Hold For Pickup is a choice the sender makes for one package; Hold Mail is the recipient pausing all delivery to their address for 3 to 30 days.

How we checked this

Fees come from Notice 123 effective Oct 4, 2026, read on Oct 19, 2026 by USPS's own price code for each fee and matched to the USPS price file; earlier fees come from the same codes in the Postal Explorer archive editions back to Jul 13, 2025. Every fee on these pages is the same in the Jul 12, 2026 and Oct 4, 2026 editions: the Oct 4 holiday edition changed package postage, not extra-service fees. Rules are quoted word for word from the Domestic Mail Manual sections and usps.com pages listed below, fetched on Oct 19, 2026. Package postage in examples is USPS's own price; selling platforms and label services can charge their own.
