How do I get a refund for a USPS label I printed but didn't use?

Ask whoever sold you the label: USPS Click-N-Ship labels can be refunded from your Shipping History within 30 days of printing, and by emailing the Click-N-Ship Help Desk from 30 to 60 days. For labels from a PC Postage provider, USPS's rule is that you request the refund through the provider within 30 days of printing, the provider decides, it may charge a processing fee, and you must destroy the label once it's refunded.

Fees from USPS Notice 123 effective Oct 4, 2026 (the same since Jul 12, 2026); rules quoted from the Domestic Mail Manual and usps.com, each with its section. USPS decides every claim and refund; this is a guide to its published rules.

Labels from a selling platform or label service

Labels sold by a USPS-approved PC Postage provider follow DMM 604.9.3. Shipping labels carry a package identification code (the tracking barcode), so these rules from 604.9.3.10 apply:

“The PC Postage system provider grants or denies a request for a refund for PC Postage indicia using established USPS criteria.”

“Requests must be initiated for within thirty (30) days of printing the indicia.”

“If a postage refund is granted, the original physical shipping label must be destroyed by the authorized user.”

“The provider may, at its discretion, charge for processing a refund request.”

DMM 604.9.3.10 also says requests go to the provider electronically, using the provider's own procedures, and that you don't send labels in. Where you bought the label is where you start.

If the provider says no, DMM 604.9.3.8 allows an appeal within 30 days of the ruling, through USPS's director of Commercial Payment, with the original label sent in and your reason. “If the appeal to an unfavorable refund request ruling results in a refund being granted, the amount refunded may not exceed 90% of the indicia’s face value.” (DMM 604.9.3.8)

Closing a label account with money left in it is a separate request to the provider: “Individual customer refunds are not issued for unused postage value less than $25 remaining in a PC Postage system.” (DMM 604.9.3.12)

USPS's refunds page says approved Click-N-Ship refunds are credited to the original payment account.

Can I get a refund on a label after 60 days?

Not under these rules: Click-N-Ship allows up to 60 days after printing, and labels from PC Postage providers with a tracking code must be requested within 30 days (DMM 604.9.3.10).

What if the label provider denies my refund?

Appeal within 30 days of the ruling, with the original label (DMM 604.9.3.8). A refund granted on appeal can't be more than 90% of the label's face value.

USPS's Click-N-Ship instructions list none. PC Postage providers may charge one at their discretion (DMM 604.9.3.10).

Can I refund unused stamps?

No. Unused stamps aren't refunded; DMM 604.9.1 allows exchanges in limited cases, such as damaged stamps or a purchase error.

How we checked this

Fees come from Notice 123 effective Oct 4, 2026, read on Oct 19, 2026 by USPS's own price code for each fee and matched to the USPS price file; earlier fees come from the same codes in the Postal Explorer archive editions back to Jul 13, 2025. Every fee on these pages is the same in the Jul 12, 2026 and Oct 4, 2026 editions: the Oct 4 holiday edition changed package postage, not extra-service fees. Rules are quoted word for word from the Domestic Mail Manual sections and usps.com pages listed below, fetched on Oct 19, 2026. Package postage in examples is USPS's own price; selling platforms and label services can charge their own.
