Payment apps' 24% backup withholding: the $20,000 and 200-transaction floor is final
-
Final regulations (T.D. 10053, published Aug. 10, 2026, adopting the Jan. 9, 2026 proposed rules without change) say a payment app or marketplace that must backup withhold (for example, because you haven't given it your taxpayer identification number) starts withholding only once your payments for the year exceed both $20,000 and 200 transactions, beginning with the payment that crosses the later of the two. If any of its payments to you in the previous year were reportable, it withholds on every payment from the start of the year. The rules apply to payments in calendar years beginning after Dec. 31, 2024, and the backup withholding rate is 24%. General information, not tax advice: check with a tax professional.
