Can you reuse a box with old labels, barcodes or logos for USPS?
Yes. USPS accepts good, rigid used boxes with all flaps intact, but every old marking has to go: cover or black out old labels, barcodes, addresses and logos, and fully remove or obliterate any hazmat, alcohol or other restricted-material marks.
A legible hazmat mark can make the box nonmailable, and USPS treats the package as holding what the mark says. On an online label that can draw the $50.00 HAZMAT Noncompliance Fee.

The rule, in USPS's words
“Good, rigid, used boxes with all flaps intact are acceptable.”
“Any obsolete marking on a container to be reused for mailing must be obliterated.”
“Reused packaging, boxes, and containers with labels or markings associated with hazardous, prohibited, or restricted materials must have those labels or markings fully removed or obliterated”
“If they remain legible, the packaging may be considered nonmailable and will be treated as containing the indicated materials.”
“Postal Service employees are not permitted to alter or remove labels or markings, even if requested to do so by the mailer.”
“make sure all old logos, barcodes, shipping labels, and addresses are covered or blacked out.”
Old markings and what USPS says
| Marking on the box | USPS rule | If it stays legible |
|---|---|---|
| Old shipping label, barcode or address | cover or black out (USPS packages page) | an obsolete marking that must be obliterated (DMM 601.5.1) |
| Lithium battery mark from an electronics shipment | remove or obliterate fully (Pub 52, 224) | treated as holding lithium batteries, which can bring the $50.00 HAZMAT Noncompliance Fee on an online label |
| Wine or liquor brand box | remove all logos and labels (USPS restrictions page) | alcohol is restricted and prohibited from mailing (Pub 52, 224) |
| Bleach or cleaning-product box | remove or obliterate fully | many cleaning products are hazardous and prohibited (Pub 52, 224) |
| "Fragile" or "Perishable" printed on the box | use only when true (DMM 601.5.1) | a box marked for one content holding another isn't acceptable |
Edge cases
- Wrong-content boxes: USPS's own example of an unacceptable box is one marked "Bleach" that contains clothing (DMM 601.5.1).
- Counter labels: Notice 123 lists the $50.00 fee only with commercial prices, but a box with live hazmat marks can still be refused or handled as hazmat.
- The clerk can't fix it for you: only you or your representative may remove the marks (Publication 52, 224).
- Priority Mail boxes can't be reused for Ground Advantage even with every marking covered (Priority Mail box rule).
- Weak boxes: USPS warns that boxes can weaken during shipping; a box that doesn't keep its shape may also be charged the nonstandard fee (DMM 601.3.1.2).
- Claims: USPS doesn't pay for damage to an item packaged so it couldn't have arrived undamaged (DMM 609.4.3).
What to do
- Before you pack, scan all six sides of the box and cover or cut away every old label, barcode, address and logo.
- Turning a box inside out works only if the inside is blank and the box still closes with all flaps intact; otherwise cover the marks with blank label paper.
- Never reuse a box with a hazmat, battery, alcohol or chemical mark unless you can remove the mark completely.
Questions
Can I use an old retail box with the company's logo?
Yes, if the box is rigid with its flaps intact and you cover or black out the old logos, barcodes, labels and addresses (USPS; DMM 601.4.2).
Why would USPS charge $50 for a reused box?
If an old hazmat mark is still legible, USPS treats the package as holding hazmat (Publication 52, 224); on a commercial label, hazmat that isn't properly declared and labeled can draw the $50.00 HAZMAT Noncompliance Fee (Notice 123).
