Can you use a free Priority Mail box for Ground Advantage?

No. USPS-produced Priority Mail packaging may be used only for Priority Mail, and USPS charges the Priority Mail price for anything mailed in it, even if the box is turned inside out or its markings are covered.

For a 2 lb package to Zone 5 online that is $14.02 instead of $10.50 by Ground Advantage; at the counter, $17.85 instead of $14.85.

Postage in the examples is from Notice 123 effective Oct 4, 2026, which includes USPS's temporary holiday prices for Ground Advantage and Priority Mail until 12 a.m. CT Jan 17, 2027. The fees quoted here are the same as in the July 12, 2026 edition, before the holiday prices began.

Edge cases

  • Flat Rate needs a USPS Flat Rate box; your own box never gets Flat Rate prices.
  • Hazmat: USPS-produced packaging can't carry mailable hazardous materials or live animals, except Ground Advantage and Connect Local packaging (DMM 601.6.1); USPS also says you can't use free Priority Mail packaging for restricted hazmat (USPS).
  • The military Flat Rate box: the APO/FPO/DPO Large Flat Rate Box ($31.34 online) pays the regular Large Flat Rate price ($32.75) if sent to a non-military address (DMM 123.1.4.2).
  • Priority Mail Express packaging is the same: it may be used only for Priority Mail Express (DMM 601.6.1).

What to do

  • Ship Ground Advantage in a plain box or mailer of your own.
  • Keep USPS Priority Mail boxes for sales where the buyer pays for Priority Mail, or where Flat Rate is cheaper than the price by weight.

Questions

Can I turn a Priority Mail box inside out for Ground Advantage?

Are free USPS boxes only for Priority Mail?

USPS's free boxes and envelopes are Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express packaging, and each may be used only for its own service (DMM 601.6.1; USPS).
