Do you have to take Media Mail to the Post Office counter?
USPS's rules: With stamps over 10 oz, yes
If the postage is stamps only and the package weighs more than 10 oz or is more than 1/2 in. thick, yes: it can't go in a collection box, lobby drop, dock or your mailbox for pickup, and USPS returns it to you if it's left there. The DMM lets Media Mail postage be paid by stamps or by postage evidencing system indicia, the meter and PC Postage labels, and its 10 oz rule is written for stamps only. USPS's own how-to page tells consumers to bring Media Mail to a Post Office counter, and every piece must carry the words "Media Mail" in the postage area or on the shipping label.

What it costs to ship
Media Mail costs the same to every US address, with a 1 lb minimum ($4.39) and any fraction of a pound rounded up. Ground Advantage, USPS's ground package service with tracking included, is priced by weight and zone: online is USPS's commercial price for labels bought online, and the counter price is retail.
| Package | Media Mail (if it qualifies) | Ground Advantage online, Zones 1-9 | Ground Advantage at the counter, Zones 1-9 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 lb | $4.39 | $8.01 to $11.22 | $10.05 to $13.65 |
| 2 lb | $5.13 | $8.39 to $13.42 | $11.30 to $19.80 |
| 5 lb | $7.34 | $10.35 to $20.24 | $13.75 to $27.45 |
Worked examples
- A 2 lb box paid with stamps: hand it to a counter clerk; $5.13 in stamps.
- A 4 oz booklet in a flat mailer under 1/2 in. thick, paid with stamps: the 10 oz rule doesn't apply, and Media Mail still charges the 1 lb minimum, $4.39.
- Pickup on Demand is offered for Media Mail from designated ZIP Codes, for a fee: $26.50 per pickup (DMM 176.2).

Edge cases
- Single-piece Media Mail must be deposited at a time and place the postmaster specifies (DMM 176.1.1).
- Improperly presented stamped pieces are returned to the sender for proper entry (DMM 176.1.2).
- With a label instead of stamps, your carrier can take it: Package Services parcels are on the Pickup on Demand list, and a pickup made during the carrier's regular delivery or collection stop has no fee (DMM 507.7.1.3, 7.2.1).
- Going to an APO, FPO or a territory with a customs form and stamps only? It has to go over the counter (APO, FPO and DPO).
What to do
- Over 10 oz with stamps: take it to the counter.
- Check that your label or the package says "Media Mail".
