The cheapest way to ship books: USPS Media Mail

The cheapest way to ship a book is USPS Media Mail: $4.39 for a package up to 1 lb, $5.13 up to 2 lb and $7.34 up to 5 lb, the same price for every zone and the same at the Post Office counter as on a commercial label (USPS Notice 123, effective Oct 4, 2026; checked Oct 14, 2026). A Ground Advantage label for a package under 1 lb costs $7.33 to $8.95 at commercial prices ($8.01 to $11.22 at exactly 1 lb), so Media Mail saves $2.94 to $6.83 up to 1 lb. One exception: a thin, flexible book up to 10 oz and no more than 3/4 inch thick can go cheaper as a First-Class Mail large envelope ($3.72 at 8 oz), but without tracking (large envelope prices and rules).

The trade-offs: only books and other qualifying media can go (no video games), USPS quotes 2-8 days instead of 2-5 for Ground Advantage, and USPS can open the package to check what's inside (USPS).

Media Mail vs Ground Advantage, 1-10 lb

Media Mail has one price per weight. Ground Advantage depends on the zone (Zone 1 is nearest) and on where you buy it: commercial prices are the published prices for online labels, retail is the Post Office counter. Ground Advantage prices here include USPS's temporary holiday prices, which run until 12 a.m. CT Jan 17, 2027 (holiday prices); Media Mail isn't part of them.

USPS published prices from Notice 123, effective Oct 4, 2026, Zones 1-8. Each weight is "not over"; Ground Advantage prices a package under 1 lb by the ounce, below its price for a full pound, while Media Mail charges its 1 lb price for both. "Saves" is the Ground Advantage price minus the Media Mail price. Platform and label-service rates can differ.

A box over 1 cubic foot can cost more by Ground Advantage, which bills the greater of actual or dimensional weight (tracker entry: USPS dimensional-weight rule).

Where to buy the label: USPS vs platform labels

USPS's Media Mail price is the same at the counter and at commercial prices. A label you buy through a selling platform follows that platform's own price list, which can be higher and changes on its own dates.

  • Mercari. From Oct 19, 2026, Mercari's Media Mail labels cost $0.52 to $1.02 less than before, for new and existing listings, whether the buyer or the seller pays shipping. They're still $0.08 to $0.11 above USPS's price. Tracker entry: Mercari Media Mail label price cut. On the same date its Ground Advantage labels go up: 1 lb at the Best rate goes from $7.48 to $7.99, against $4.39 for 1 lb of Media Mail (tracker entry: Mercari Ground Advantage label increase).
  • eBay Labels. For items that can't go by Media Mail: during the USPS holiday prices, eBay says its label prices don't go up for Priority Mail or Ground Advantage packages up to 20 lb in Zones 1-8 (eBay, Sep 28, 2026). At USPS's published commercial prices, a 0-3 lb Ground Advantage label to Zones 1-4 costs $0.40 more until Jan 17, 2027. Tracker entry: eBay Labels holiday pricing.
  • Whatnot. Since Jul 31, 2026, Whatnot's default label is Ground Advantage at a negotiated $7.75 for 1-5 lb, with lighter packages priced by weight from $4.47; it also offers Media Mail labels, which it says were repriced separately, in line with USPS pricing, with a slight decrease as of Jul 31, 2026 (Whatnot help). Buyers usually pay Whatnot shipping. By Media Mail at USPS's price, 1-5 lb costs $4.39 to $7.34. Tracker entry: Whatnot Ground Advantage default.
  • Poshmark. Buyers pay for Poshmark's prepaid label. From Oct 26, 2026, a package over 5 lb shipped on the standard label without an upgrade costs you the upgrade from your earnings: $5.00 for 5.01-10 lb and $10.00 for 10.01-15 lb (Poshmark, Oct 8, 2026). Upgrading the label first costs the same, but avoids a surprise deduction after you ship a heavy bundle of books. Tracker entry: Poshmark overweight-label deductions.
  • Amazon. Media minimums depend on postage, so they move with Media Mail: Amazon book minimum prices by weight.

The platform's cut of the shipping you charge

eBay, Amazon and Mercari take their percentage from buyer-paid shipping too, so a buyer who pays exactly the label price still leaves you short by the fee on it. This is the extra fee on a 1 lb Media Mail charge, computed with the same code as the fee calculators.

Fee on the shipping charge = platform fees with buyer-paid shipping minus fees without it. Shipping charged: USPS's 1 lb Media Mail price ($4.39); on Mercari, its 1 lb Media Mail label from Oct 19, 2026 ($4.47). No sales tax. Fee rates from each platform's fee page, checked Oct 14, 2026.
Platform $10 book$25 book$50 book
eBay, Books & Magazines -$0.77-$0.67-$0.67
Amazon, media -$0.66-$0.66-$0.66
Mercari -$0.45-$0.45-$0.45

eBay's figure is higher on the $10 book because the shipping lifts the order above $10, where eBay's per-order fee goes from $0.30 to $0.40.

Is anything cheaper than Media Mail?

A large envelope, for thin and flexible items only

First-Class Mail large envelopes go up to 13 oz and cost less than Media Mail's $4.39 up to 10 oz (USPS Notice 123). The rules are strict: a large envelope must be flexible and uniformly thick, and no more than 15 inches long, 12 inches high or 3/4 inch thick (DMM 101). Notice 123 says large envelopes that are "rigid, nonrectangular, or not uniformly thick pay parcel prices," and Ground Advantage retail starts at $8.40 for 8 oz (Zone 1). Large envelopes also don't include tracking (USPS). For a typical book, Media Mail is the safer choice.

Library Mail, for schools, libraries and nonprofits

Library Mail costs $4.17 for 1 lb (Notice 123), but each piece must show the name of a school, college, university, public library, museum, herbarium or qualifying nonprofit in the address or return address (DMM 173.5). An ordinary sale from a reseller to a shopper doesn't qualify.

Ground Advantage, for some heavy boxes going nearby

At current published prices, commercial Ground Advantage beats Media Mail only at 19 lb to Zone 1, 20 lb to Zones 1 and 2. Check the postage calculator before you ship a big lot.

What qualifies for Media Mail

USPS lists what can go by Media Mail (USPS: mail and shipping services):

  • Books of at least 8 pages
  • 16 mm or narrower films
  • Printed music and test materials
  • Video and sound recordings, including tapes, albums, CDs and DVDs
  • Playscripts and manuscripts
  • Printed educational reference charts
  • Medical loose-leaf pages and binders
  • Computer-readable media

Video games, computer drives and digital drives don't qualify. USPS says that if you include anything that isn't allowed, you or your recipient will have to pay higher postage, and that all Media Mail packages are subject to opening and inspection. The maximum weight is 70 lb.

The Domestic Mail Manual adds detail (DMM 173): a book must consist wholly of reading matter or scholarly bibliography and carry no advertising other than incidental announcements of books, and the publisher's own ads count as advertising. Mailing at Media Mail prices "constitutes consent by the mailer to postal inspection of the contents."

How to pack books to keep postage down

  • Weigh the packed parcel, not the book. Media Mail charges "any fraction of a pound" as a whole pound (DMM 173.1.2). A book that weighs 1 lb 1 oz once packed pays the 2 lb price, $5.13 instead of $4.39 (+$0.74). Weighing matters on platform labels too: from Nov 4, 2026, Whatnot passes USPS charges for packages that weigh more than their Whatnot label on to the sellers in its rollout (tracker entry: Whatnot carrier weight adjustments).
  • Near a pound line, use the lightest packaging that still protects the book. A padded mailer usually weighs less than a box; save boxes for hardcovers, sets and collectible copies.
  • Combine a buyer's books in one package. Two 1 lb packages cost $8.78 by Media Mail; one 2 lb package costs $5.13.
  • Keep moisture out. Put the book in a plastic bag or wrap before it goes into a paper mailer or box, and fill empty space so it can't slide.
  • A packing slip and a thank-you note are fine. An invoice for what's inside may go in a Media Mail package, and so may a short personal message or greeting with the item, without First-Class postage; postage is based on the combined weight (DMM 173.6.3 and 6.4). Don't add items that don't qualify, such as a video game.
  • Cover old hazmat labels on reused boxes. Since Jul 12, 2026, USPS has charged $50 on commercial-price packages such as Ground Advantage when it detects hazardous materials that weren't declared, and a reused box that still shows an old hazmat marking is the common way resellers get hit (tracker entry: USPS hazmat noncompliance fee); Mercari takes $25 of it from the seller (tracker entry: Mercari hazmat fee split). Notice 123 doesn't list the fee for Media Mail, but a reused box can end up on a Ground Advantage label.
  • Mind box size on Ground Advantage. USPS's dimensional-weight rule covers Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, Ground Advantage and Parcel Select boxes over 1 cubic foot (tracker entry: USPS dimensional-weight rule). Media Mail prices are based on the weight of the piece (DMM 173.1.1).

  3. USPS Postage Announced

USPS may raise stamp and Media Mail prices in January 2027, by up to 2.105% on average per class

On July 16, 2026, USPS asked the Postal Regulatory Commission to let it count estimated fiscal 2026 density rate authority so it could move its yearly mailing price increase to January 2027. The PRC denied the request on Aug. 21, 2026 (Order No. 9696) but said USPS may still file in October 2026 for a January 2027 increase. The PRC's Oct. 14, 2026 rate-authority table puts the most USPS can raise First-Class Mail and Package Services (which includes Media Mail) at 2.105% on average.

Questions

What is the cheapest way to ship a book?

USPS Media Mail, if the book has at least 8 pages and the package holds only items that qualify. It costs $4.39 up to 1 lb, $5.13 up to 2 lb and $7.34 up to 5 lb, one price for every distance, at the counter or on a label (USPS Notice 123, effective Oct 4, 2026). A thin, flexible book up to 10 oz and no more than 3/4 inch thick can go cheaper as a First-Class Mail large envelope ($3.72 at 8 oz), but without tracking (large envelope prices and rules).

Is Media Mail cheaper than Ground Advantage?

Almost always. At the published prices in effect now, Media Mail costs less than commercial Ground Advantage in 627 of 630 weight-and-zone combinations from 1 to 70 lb; the exceptions are 19 lb to Zone 1, 20 lb to Zones 1 and 2. Up to 1 lb it saves $2.94 to $6.83 against commercial prices (Ground Advantage costs $7.33 to $8.95 for a package under 1 lb and $8.01 to $11.22 at exactly 1 lb) and $4.01 to $9.26 against the Post Office counter (USPS Notice 123).

How long does Media Mail take?

USPS quotes 2-8 days for Media Mail and 2-5 days for Ground Advantage (USPS). The Domestic Mail Manual adds that USPS "does not guarantee the delivery of Media Mail" within a set time (DMM 173), so set handling times and delivery estimates with that range in mind.

Does Media Mail include tracking?

Yes. USPS Notice 123 lists USPS Tracking as included for Package Services, the class that contains Media Mail. First-Class Mail large envelopes don't include tracking unless you add a service such as Certified Mail (USPS).

Can I ship video games, magazines or comics by Media Mail?

Video games can't go by Media Mail; USPS says "Video games, computer drives, and digital drives do not qualify" (USPS). For printed matter, USPS's book standard requires at least eight printed pages and "no advertising matter other than incidental announcements of books," and it counts the publisher's own ads as advertising (DMM 173.4.1). A magazine or comic that carries ads doesn't meet that standard. Video recordings such as DVDs count as sound recordings, which do qualify.

Do the USPS holiday prices change Media Mail?

No. The temporary prices from Oct 4, 2026 to Jan 17, 2027 cover Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, Ground Advantage and Parcel Select. Media Mail and First-Class Mail aren't part of them (USPS, Aug 25, 2026).

Will Media Mail go up in January 2027?

It could. The Postal Regulatory Commission said USPS may file in October 2026 for a January 2027 mailing price change, and its rate-authority table caps the average increase for Package Services, which includes Media Mail, at 2.105%. USPS can raise individual prices by more or less than that average. No filing had been found as of Oct 14, 2026. A separate rule allows at most one such increase per fiscal year through Sep 30, 2030 (tracker entry: one mailing price increase per year). Details in the tracker: January 2027 Media Mail price cap; everything known so far: USPS price changes for 2027.

Is Mercari's Media Mail label cheaper than USPS?

No, but it's closer. From Oct 19, 2026, Mercari's prepaid Media Mail labels cost $4.47 for 1 lb, $5.22 for 2 lb, $5.97 for 3 lb, which is $0.08 to $0.11 above USPS's own price at each weight (Mercari; tracker entry: Mercari Media Mail label price cut).
