Where five selling apps keep their sales reports for taxes
Each selling app keeps its own sales report, in its own menu and format, and none of them includes what you paid for your inventory. The table below shows where Poshmark, Mercari, Depop, Whatnot and TikTok Shop keep theirs, the file type where the platform names it, and whether each says it issues Form 1099-K, all from the platforms' own help pages checked . The federal rule for apps and marketplaces is a 1099-K when payments total over $20,000 in more than 200 transactions in a year (IRS). Platforms may still send one for less, some states set lower thresholds, and all income is reportable whether or not a form arrives.

What each app's 1099-K counts
A 1099-K reports a gross figure, and each app builds it a little differently. That's one reason a 1099-K total can differ from what a sales report adds up to.
| Platform | What the platform says its 1099-K counts | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Poshmark | Gross sales "including fees, refunds, and cancelled orders." | How do I download my Form 1099-K? |
| Mercari | Item price, buyer-paid shipping and buyer-paid sales tax on completed orders; buyer-paid service and payment processing fees, refunds and canceled orders left out. Mercari's Tax Center page also lists buyer-paid merchant fees in gross sales. | 1099-K related FAQs; How to use the Tax Center |
| Depop | Unadjusted gross sales: sales, shipping, refunds, seller-paid fees and buyer-paid fees, including the Marketplace Fee. | Receiving your 1099-K from Stripe |
| Whatnot | All Whatnot earnings for the year, as issued through Stripe. | 2025 Form 1099-K for U.S. Sellers |
| TikTok Shop | Product sales price plus shipping, minus seller discounts, by the month the buyer paid; not reduced for later refunds or cancellations. | 1099-K and Tax Form FAQs |
Three different numbers
- The sales report or statement is the platform's own record of your sales. On most of these apps it goes order by order; Whatnot's statements are monthly and annual summaries, and TikTok Shop's settlement report is organized by settlement rather than by when orders were created. It shows what sold and, on most of these apps, the platform's fees. It's the file to keep for your records.
- The 1099-K is a gross amount the platform reports to the IRS when you pass a threshold. It isn't your profit, and it can include amounts you never kept.
- Your profit needs your own costs, starting with what you paid for the items. No platform report has those.
The IRS says platforms "may send you a Form 1099-K with lower amounts and/or transactions," and that "Whether or not you receive a Form 1099-K, you must still report any income on your tax return." The full federal rule is in 1099-K for resellers. Which numbers go on which form is a question for a tax professional.
Common questions
Do selling apps include my cost of goods in their sales reports?
No. None of the report descriptions on this page lists a cost-of-goods column, and Mercari says it plainly: "we do not have the original cost of your sold items." What you paid for inventory comes from your own records.
Which selling apps send a 1099-K?
Poshmark, Mercari, Depop, Whatnot and TikTok Shop each say on their help pages that they issue Form 1099-K to sellers above the federal threshold. Poshmark, Depop and Whatnot also say they issue one to sellers who meet a lower state threshold. Whatnot issues its form through Stripe, so sellers who cash out only through PayPal don't get one from Whatnot.
Why doesn't my sales report match my 1099-K?
Each app counts its 1099-K its own way. Poshmark and Depop say theirs includes refunds; Mercari counts completed orders only; TikTok Shop counts by the month the buyer paid. Mercari's, Depop's and TikTok Shop's reports and Whatnot's statements list fees separately, while the 1099-K reports a gross amount.
What is the federal 1099-K threshold for selling apps?
The IRS says a payment app or online marketplace must send a 1099-K when your payments for goods or services total over $20,000 in more than 200 transactions in a year. A platform may send one for less, and some states set lower thresholds.
I sell on several apps. Will I get several forms?
You can. The IRS says: "If you accept payments on different platforms, you could get more than one Form 1099-K." Each app applies the threshold to the payments that go through it. Whatever forms arrive, the IRS says income must be reported whether or not you receive a 1099-K.
