eBay fees by category: every final value fee rate

In most categories, eBay's final value fee is 13.6% of the total sale up to $7,500 and 2.35% on any part above, plus $0.30 per order ($0.40 on orders over $10.00). 11 other rows of eBay's fee table set their own rates, starting from 3% for heavy equipment, commercial printing presses and food trucks up to 15.3% for books, movies and music.

eBay figures the fee on the total amount of the sale, which includes shipping and sales tax. Checked Oct 14, 2026 from eBay's Selling fees page (US); we re-check it monthly, and eBay can change its rates.

Cheap items: what eBay takes on a $1 to $15 sale

The flat per-order fee ($0.30 on orders of $10.00 or less, $0.40 above) pushes eBay's share of a cheap sale well past the headline rate: in most categories it takes 44% of a $1 sale and 19.6% of a $5 sale. Item price only, no shipping charged and no sales tax; the share of the price is in brackets.

eBay final value fee plus the per-order fee on a cheap sale, three common rows of eBay's table, checked Oct 14, 2026. If shipping or tax takes an item of $10.00 or less over a $10.00 total, our figures charge the $0.40 per-order fee; eBay's page doesn't say whether they count toward that line.

Where the rate changes

eBay's table uses two kinds of line. In most rows only the part of one item's total above the line pays the lower rate ("on the portion of the sale over"). In Athletic shoes (men's and women's), Women's Bags & Handbags, Jewelry & Watches (not watches) and Bullion, the whole total switches rate once it passes the line ("if total amount of the sale is ..."), so one cent can cut the fee sharply. Every line is on the total, shipping and sales tax included.

Each threshold in eBay's fee table: the rate before and after the line, and the fees (with the per-order fee) at the line and one cent past it. "Part above" rows charge the new rate only on the part over the line, so the fee doesn't jump; "whole total" rows switch rate on everything.

$150 Athletic shoes (men's and women's) whole total 13.6% to 8% $20.80 $12.00

$15,000 Heavy equipment, printing presses, food trucks part above 3% to 0.5% $450.40 $450.40

Athletic shoes: the line is "less than $150" against "$150 or more", so the columns show $149.99 and $150.00.

  • The per-order fee has its own line. "For orders $10.00 or less the per order fee is $0.30, for orders over $10.00 the per order fee is $0.40." And: "An order is defined as any number of items purchased by the same buyer at checkout with the same shipping method." eBay doesn't say whether shipping and sales tax count toward that $10.00 line. The fees on this page count them, the same base as the final value fee, so an item priced at $10.00 or less shows $0.40 once shipping or tax takes the total over (eBay fees on sales tax).
  • Tiers are per item. eBay writes "calculated per item", so two $5,000 items in one order each pay 13.6% on their own total in most categories: $1,360.40 in fees, against $1,079.15 for one $10,000 item.
  • Athletic shoes also drop the per-order fee at a $150 total, and their insertion fee is waived at a $150 starting price, which eBay says "doesn't include shipping, handling, taxes, or fees" (sneakers).

What eBay counts in the total

"The total amount of the sale includes the item price, any handling charges, any shipping costs collected from the buyer (some exceptions apply), sales tax, and any other applicable fees." eBay's fee page gives two worked examples, and our calculator's code reproduces both:

  • eBay's auction-style example: a used smartphone that sells for its $400 Buy It Now price, free shipping, 6% sales tax: a $424 total and a final value fee of $58.06 on eBay's page; $58.06 with our code, before the $0.35 insertion fee.
  • eBay's fixed price example: a $9,500 trading card, free shipping, 6% sales tax, with Bold: a $10,070 total and a final value fee of $1,054.55 on eBay's page; $1,054.55 with our code, before the $0.35 insertion fee and $4.00 for Bold.

Two shipping exceptions from the same page: "If you offer 1-day or international shipping as well as a cheaper or free option (like domestic shipping), the total amount of the sale is calculated based on the cheapest domestic option you offer." And: "If you ship internationally using eBay International Shipping, your final value fee for shipping is calculated on your cost to ship to the US shipping hub."

Fees on top of the final value fee

  • Insertion fees: up to 250 zero insertion fee listings a month (more with an eBay Store), then $0.35 per listing and per category. Exceptions in the table: Heavy equipment, printing presses, food trucks ("$20"), Guitars & Basses ("Free") and Athletic shoes (men's and women's) ("Free if starting price is $150 or more").
  • Two categories: "The higher of the two final value fees is charged, if your item sells," plus a second insertion fee.
  • Reserve price: "$5.00 or 7.5% of reserve price, whichever is greater (maximum fee $250)", charged whether or not the item sells; $5.00 in the three select Business & Industrial categories.
  • International fee: 1.65% of the total when the delivery address or the buyer's registered address is outside the US, unless you're US-registered and use eBay International Shipping.
  • Seller performance: Below Standard adds 6% of the total (7% after four or more consecutive months); a Very High rate of "item not as described" return requests adds 5% in the affected categories (6% after four or more consecutive months). "This fee does not apply to Above Standard and eBay Top-rated Sellers." And the two don't stack: "If your account is Below Standard and you're rated Very High in your rate of 'Item not as described' return requests, you'll only be charged the additional final value fee for Below Standard."
  • No separate payment processing fee: "We charge one final value fee when your item sells, and you don't have to worry about third-party payment processing fees."
  • Refunds and cancellations: "If you need to refund the buyer or cancel the sale, you may be eligible for fee credits as per our fee credits policy."
  • Deals taken off eBay: offer your contact details, or ask for a buyer's, to deal outside eBay and "you'll be charged a final value fee based on the total amount of the sale even if your item doesn't sell".
  • Ending an auction early: "Fees may apply if you end your auction-style listing early."
  • Dispute fee: $20.00 per dispute you're found responsible for, such as a chargeback.
  • Store subscribers, vehicles and eBay Live: "Fees are different for Store subscribers, vehicle sales, and eBay Live sales."

Questions

What is eBay's final value fee in most categories?

In most categories, eBay's final value fee is 13.6% of the total sale up to $7,500 and 2.35% on any part above, plus $0.30 per order ($0.40 on orders over $10.00). On a $25 sale with no shipping or tax, that's $3.80. The total includes shipping and sales tax (eBay fees on sales tax).

Which eBay category has the lowest fees?

By rate, the select Business & Industrial categories (Heavy Equipment, Commercial Printing Presses and Food Trucks, Trailers & Carts): 3% up to $15,000, though each listing there costs $20 (heavy equipment). On a $100 sale, the lowest fees are Heavy equipment, printing presses, food trucks ($3.40); NFT categories ($5.40); Guitars & Basses ($7.10).

Which eBay category has the highest fees?

By rate, books, movies and music: 15.3% up to $7,500 (books, DVDs and CDs). On a $100 sale, the highest fees are Books & Magazines, Movies & TV, Music (not vinyl) ($15.70); Watches, Parts & Accessories, Jewelry & Watches (not watches) and Women's Bags & Handbags ($15.40 each).

Do vinyl records pay the same eBay fee as CDs?

No. eBay's Music row excludes the Vinyl Records category, so records pay the most-categories 13.6% and CDs 15.3% (vinyl records).

Which items pay eBay's 13.6% most-categories rate?

Every category the table doesn't name, plus the ones eBay names in that row: eBay Motors > Parts & Accessories, Automotive Tools & Supplies and Safety & Security Accessories (auto parts). Look-alikes that pay it: vinyl records (the Music row excludes them), sports memorabilia outside Sports Trading Cards, toys outside Collectible Card Games, bags outside Women's Bags & Handbags, shoes outside the two Athletic Shoes categories, musical gear outside Guitars & Basses, and video games, which the table doesn't name. Athletic shoes under $150 and bullion up to $7,500 pay 13.6% too, in their own rows.

What does eBay charge to sell NFTs?

5% of the total in 7 NFT categories (Art NFTs, CCG NFTs, Emerging NFTs, Movie NFTs, Music NFTs, Non-Sport Trading Card NFTs and Sport Trading Card NFTs), plus the per-order fee: $2.90 on a $50 sale. eBay's Movies & TV and Music rows exclude Movie NFTs and Music NFTs, and the card NFTs sit in this row rather than the trading-card row (trading cards).

Where does eBay's fee drop for expensive items?

At $150, $1,000, $2,000, $5,000, $7,500 and $15,000, depending on the category. In most rows only the part above the line pays the lower rate; in Athletic shoes (men's and women's), Women's Bags & Handbags, Jewelry & Watches (not watches) and Bullion, the whole total switches rate once it passes the line.

Does eBay charge a payment processing fee?

Not separately. eBay's fee page says: "We charge one final value fee when your item sells, and you don't have to worry about third-party payment processing fees." The final value fee and the per-order fee are what eBay takes from the sale itself; insertion fees, optional upgrades, ads, the international fee and penalty fees come on top only when they apply.

Do I get eBay fees back if I refund or cancel?

Possibly. eBay's fee page says: "If you need to refund the buyer or cancel the sale, you may be eligible for fee credits as per our fee credits policy." Insertion fees are a different matter: eBay says they're non-refundable if the item doesn't sell.

Is it different with an eBay Store?

It can be. eBay's fee page says: "Fees are different for Store subscribers, vehicle sales, and eBay Live sales." The rates here are eBay's basic fees, for sellers without a Store subscription.
