Above $15,000: how the 0.5% tier works
Only the part of one item's total above $15,000 pays 0.5%. The overall rate falls slowly as the price rises.
| Total | How it's figured | Final value fee | Overall rate | Next dollar |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $15,000 | 3% of $15,000.00 | $450.00 | 3% | 0.5% |
| $40,000 | 3% of $15,000.00 + 0.5% of $25,000.00 | $575.00 | 1.4% | 0.5% |
| $100,000 | 3% of $15,000.00 + 0.5% of $85,000.00 | $875.00 | 0.9% | 0.5% |
It's per item, not per order. eBay's wording is "calculated per item", so two $10,000 items in one order each pay 3% on their own total: $600.40 in fees, against $475.40 for one $20,000 item ($125.00 more).
Worked example: $24,000 machine, 8% sales tax
- Total amount of the sale: $24,000.00 item + $1,920.00 sales tax (8% of $24,000.00, an example rate) = $25,920.00.
- Final value fee: 3% of $15,000.00 + 0.5% of $10,920.00 = $504.60.
- Per-order fee: $0.40 (the order total is over $10.00).
- Total eBay fees: $505.00, 2.1% of the $24,000.00 you collect for the item. $9.60 of it comes from charging fees on the tax.
- You keep $23,495.00 before postage and the item's cost.
Edge cases
- Under Heavy Equipment Parts & Attachments, only the Heavy Equipment category is named. Other categories under it aren't, so they pay the most-categories rate.
- Against the most-categories rate: a $15,000 sale costs $450.40 here and $1,196.65 at the most-categories rate, which charges 13.6% up to $7,500.
- The insertion fee is $20 a listing, where most rows give 250 free listings a month and then charge $0.35 (Guitars & Basses is free). It's charged when you list and again each time you relist, and eBay says insertion fees are non-refundable if your item doesn't sell.
- A reserve price costs $5.00 in these three categories, instead of the usual "$5.00 or 7.5% of reserve price, whichever is greater (maximum fee $250)".
What to do
- Pick the category before you set the price. The rate follows the category the listing is in, and listing in two categories charges the higher final value fee if the item sells.
- Expect the lower rate only on the part above $15,000. The break is figured per item, not per order.
- Set your minimum on the total. eBay takes its percentage from shipping and tax too, so a price that clears your costs at the item price alone can fall short once those are added. The eBay fee calculator takes all three.
Other eBay fees that can apply
- Insertion fee: "$20" for this row, in eBay's insertion fee column. Good 'Til Cancelled listings are charged again each time they renew.
- Two categories: a second insertion fee, and "The higher of the two final value fees is charged, if your item sells."
- Reserve price (auctions): $5.00 in these categories.
- Subtitle: $3.00 on an auction and $6.00 on a fixed price listing at a $15,000 price (the price break is $150). Bold: $2.00 auction, $4.00 fixed price.
- International fee: 1.65% of the total when the delivery address or the buyer's registered address is outside the US, unless you're US-registered and use eBay International Shipping: $247.50 on a $15,000 sale.
- Seller performance: Below Standard sellers pay an extra 6% of the total (7% after four or more consecutive months): $900.00 more on a $15,000 sale. A Very High rate of "item not as described" return requests adds 5% in the affected categories (6% after four or more consecutive months).
- Store subscribers, vehicles and eBay Live: "Fees are different for Store subscribers, vehicle sales, and eBay Live sales." This page uses the basic rates.

$20 per listing in Heavy Equipment, Commercial Printing Presses and Food Trucks, Trailers & Carts, where most of eBay's rows give 250 free listings a month. A reserve price costs $5.00 in these categories.
