How much does eBay charge to sell books?

eBay's final value fee for books is 15.3% of the total up to $7,500 and 2.35% on any part above $7,500, plus $0.30 per order ($0.40 on orders over $10.00). On a $15 book with no shipping charged and no sales tax, the fees come to $2.70 (18% of the price), so you keep $12.30.

"Total" is what the buyer pays: item, shipping, handling and sales tax. Checked Oct 14, 2026 from eBay's Selling fees page; we re-check it monthly, and eBay can change its rates.

eBay's rule, word for word

From the "Basic fees for most categories" table on eBay's Selling fees page (US), checked Oct 14, 2026:

Books & Magazines; Movies & TV (except Movie NFTs); Music (except Vinyl Records and Music NFTs categories)

"15.3% on total amount of the sale up to $7,500 calculated per item"

"2.35% on the portion of the sale over $7,500"

Insertion fee column: "First 250 listings free per month, then $0.35 per listing"

The page also says the fee "is calculated as a percentage of the total amount of the sale, plus a per order fee", and: "For orders $10.00 or less the per order fee is $0.30, for orders over $10.00 the per order fee is $0.40."

eBay fees on books at real prices

eBay fees by sale price, books: item price only, no shipping charged. The last column is the same sale when the buyer pays 8% sales tax (an example rate), which eBay counts in the total. Computed with our calculator's code from eBay's fee table, checked Oct 14, 2026.
Sale price Final value fee Per-order fee Total fees Share of price You keep Fees with 8% sales tax
$4 $0.61 $0.30 $0.91 22.8% $3.09 $0.96 (+$0.05)
$8 $1.22 $0.30 $1.52 19% $6.48 $1.62 (+$0.10)
$10 $1.53 $0.30 $1.83 18.3% $8.17 $2.05* (+$0.22)
$15 $2.30 $0.40 $2.70 18% $12.30 $2.88 (+$0.18)
$25 $3.83 $0.40 $4.23 16.9% $20.77 $4.53 (+$0.30)
$50 $7.65 $0.40 $8.05 16.1% $41.95 $8.66 (+$0.61)
$100 $15.30 $0.40 $15.70 15.7% $84.30 $16.92 (+$1.22)

* With tax, the $10 sale goes over $10.00, so we charge the $0.40 per-order fee. eBay's page doesn't say whether shipping and sales tax count toward its $10.00 per-order line; we count them, so if they don't, the per-order fee is $0.30 and the fees are $0.10 lower.

Above $7,500: how the 2.35% tier works

Only the part of one item's total above $7,500 pays 2.35%. The overall rate falls slowly as the price rises.

Final value fee on one item's total, books, before the per-order fee. "Next dollar" is the rate on the next dollar of the total.
TotalHow it's figuredFinal value feeOverall rateNext dollar
$7,500 15.3% of $7,500.00 $1,147.50 15.3% 2.35%
$10,000 15.3% of $7,500.00 + 2.35% of $2,500.00 $1,206.25 12.1% 2.35%
$25,000 15.3% of $7,500.00 + 2.35% of $17,500.00 $1,558.75 6.2% 2.35%

It's per item, not per order. eBay's wording is "calculated per item", so two $5,000 items in one order each pay 15.3% on their own total: $1,530.40 in fees, against $1,206.65 for one $10,000 item ($323.75 more).

Worked example: $12 book, $5.00 shipping, 8% sales tax

  1. Total amount of the sale: $12.00 item + $5.00 shipping + $1.36 sales tax (8% of $17.00, an example rate) = $18.36.
  2. Final value fee: 15.3% of $18.36 = $2.81.
  3. Per-order fee: $0.40 (the order total is over $10.00).
  4. Total eBay fees: $3.21, 18.9% of the $17.00 you collect for item and shipping. $0.97 of it comes from charging fees on the shipping and tax.
  5. You keep $13.79 before postage and the item's cost.

  • At every price in the table, TikTok Shop leaves the most ($7.52 to $47.00).
  • Amazon (media): Amazon's media fees cover books, DVD, music, software and video. (source)
  • Mercari: Mercari has media categories (books, movies, recorded and printed music); its usual price limit is $2,000. (source)
  • TikTok Shop: TikTok Shop's referral fee table lists its Books, Magazines & Audio categories at 6%. (source)

Edge cases

  • Magazines share the row: eBay's table lists Books & Magazines as one category.
  • The rate follows the category the listing is in, not what the item is. A comic book listed in Comic Books & Memorabilia pays the comics rate below; listed in Books & Magazines it pays this one.
  • Cheap books sit on the per-order line. eBay says "For orders $10.00 or less the per order fee is $0.30, for orders over $10.00 the per order fee is $0.40." An $8 book with $2 shipping totals $10.00 and pays $0.30 either way. With $4 shipping the total is $12.00: our tables charge $0.40, counting shipping toward the line, but eBay's page doesn't say whether shipping and sales tax count, so it could be $0.30.
  • One order, one per-order fee. eBay says "An order is defined as any number of items purchased by the same buyer at checkout with the same shipping method." Five $6 books with $6 shipping in one order cost $5.91 in fees; bought as five separate orders with $1.20 shipping each, the same books cost $7.00.
  • Comic books are a different row. On a $25 sale, Books & Magazines costs $4.23 and Comic Books & Memorabilia $3.71 (eBay fees for comic books).
  • Free shipping costs the same fee as charged shipping. The fee is on the total, so a $17 book with free shipping and a $12 book with $5 shipping both pay $3.00. What changes is only how the buyer sees the price.
  • You pay the fee on the postage you pass on. Charge the buyer the USPS Media Mail price and 15.3% of it goes to eBay: about $0.67 of the $4.39 1-lb price, about $0.78 of the $5.13 2-lb price and about $0.90 of the $5.86 3-lb price, at the retail prices in USPS Notice 123, effective October 4, 2026 (what can go by Media Mail). Price your shipping charge with that in mind.

What to do

  1. Pick the category before you set the price. The rate follows the category the listing is in, and listing in two categories charges the higher final value fee if the item sells.
  2. Get several items into one order. eBay charges the per-order fee once for "any number of items purchased by the same buyer at checkout with the same shipping method", so several items in one checkout (combined shipping, or a lot) pay one per-order fee ($0.30, or $0.40 on orders over $10.00) instead of one for each item bought on its own.
  3. Expect the lower rate only on the part above $7,500. The break is figured per item, not per order.
  4. Set your minimum on the total. eBay takes its percentage from shipping and tax too, so a price that clears your costs at the item price alone can fall short once those are added. The eBay fee calculator takes all three.

Other eBay fees that can apply

  • Insertion fee: up to 250 zero insertion fee listings a month (more with an eBay Store), then $0.35 per listing and per category. Good 'Til Cancelled listings are charged again each time they renew.
  • Two categories: a second insertion fee, and "The higher of the two final value fees is charged, if your item sells."
  • Reserve price (auctions): "$5.00 or 7.5% of reserve price, whichever is greater (maximum fee $250)", charged whether or not the item sells. A $15 reserve costs $5.00; 7.5% reaches the $250 cap at a reserve of about $3,333.33, and a reserve up to about $66.67 pays the $5.00 minimum.
  • Subtitle: $1.50 on an auction and $2.00 on a fixed price listing at a $15 price (the price break is $150). Bold: $2.00 auction, $4.00 fixed price.
  • International fee: 1.65% of the total when the delivery address or the buyer's registered address is outside the US, unless you're US-registered and use eBay International Shipping: $0.25 on a $15 sale.
  • Seller performance: Below Standard sellers pay an extra 6% of the total (7% after four or more consecutive months): $0.90 more on a $15 sale. A Very High rate of "item not as described" return requests adds 5% in the affected categories (6% after four or more consecutive months).
  • Store subscribers, vehicles and eBay Live: "Fees are different for Store subscribers, vehicle sales, and eBay Live sales." This page uses the basic rates.

Questions

How much does eBay charge to sell books?

eBay's final value fee for books is 15.3% of the total up to $7,500 and 2.35% on any part above $7,500, plus $0.30 per order ($0.40 on orders over $10.00). On a $15 book with no shipping charged and no sales tax, the fees come to $2.70 (18% of the price), so you keep $12.30.

Does eBay take its fee on shipping and sales tax?

Yes. eBay says "The total amount of the sale includes the item price, any handling charges, any shipping costs collected from the buyer (some exceptions apply), sales tax, and any other applicable fees." A $12 book with $5.00 shipping and 8% sales tax totals $18.36, and the fees come to $3.21 instead of $2.24 on the price alone.

How does eBay's fee work above $7,500?

Only the part of one item's total above $7,500 pays 2.35%. On a $25,000 total the final value fee is $1,558.75, an overall 6.2%. The break is "calculated per item", so it doesn't apply to an order of several cheaper items.

Do comic books pay the book rate on eBay?

Not in Comic Books & Memorabilia, which pays 13.25%: $3.71 on a $25 sale against $4.23 in Books & Magazines. The rate follows the category the listing is in.
