Cheapest way to ship trading cards, including a single card

A plain letter envelope is the cheapest way to ship a card. One card in an envelope up to 1 oz costs $0.82 with a Forever stamp, or $0.78 with metered postage (USPS Notice 123, letter prices in effect since Jul 12, 2026, checked Oct 14, 2026). Letters get no USPS Tracking. The cheapest USPS option with USPS Tracking and insurance included is a 4 oz commercial Ground Advantage label at $7.33 to $8.95 (Zones 1-8), which includes USPS's holiday add-on until Jan 17, 2027. A stamped letter with Certified Mail gets delivery confirmation for $6.37, but no insurance.

Selling on a platform? eBay standard envelope ships cards that sell for $20 or less from $0.78 per eBay's July rate notice ($0.82 on its help page), with eBay's limited tracking. Whatnot's FCML labels for small live-show card orders start at $0.78, and its Ground Advantage label under 4 oz is $4.47. eBay says eBay Labels prices are below USPS commercial pricing for most shipments.

Tracked options for a card up to 4 oz

When you need USPS Tracking or insurance, the card ships as a package. USPS Ground Advantage includes tracking and up to $100 of insurance, and USPS lists 2-5 days for delivery (USPS). Commercial prices are what online label services pay; retail is the Post Office counter.

Since Jul 12, 2026, USPS charges the same commercial Ground Advantage price for any weight under 1 lb, so a 4 oz card mailer pays the 15.999 oz price (tracker entry). Before the holiday add-on started on Oct 4, 2026, the 4 oz commercial label was $6.93 (Zone 1), $7.46 (Zone 4), $8.40 (Zone 8). At January 18, 2026 prices the Zone 1 label was $5.09 (Notice 123 archive); it's $7.33 now. Platform labels can cost less than USPS's published prices. Whatnot's $4.47 under 4 oz is one example, and eBay says eBay Labels prices are below USPS commercial pricing for most shipments (tracker entry).

Packing a card for a tracked package

A card that ships as a package (a Ground Advantage label, a platform label, or a trip to eBay's authenticator) needs packing that stops it bending or moving. Whatnot publishes step-by-step card-packing rules (Whatnot packaging guidelines, updated Sep 21, 2026). They're written for Whatnot sales, where Whatnot says unsafe packaging can lead to higher seller fees or the loss of selling privileges. Steps 1 to 4 come from that page.

  1. Sleeve it. Whatnot recommends a penny sleeve for every card. A high-value card must go in a penny sleeve and a properly sized top loader.
  2. Close the top loader with painter's tape, not Scotch tape.
  3. Bag it. Raw cards go in a team bag so they can't move; a graded slab goes in a graded-card sleeve or a team bag so its case doesn't get scratched.
  4. Use a padded mailer with no empty space. A bubble mailer or other padded packaging, with cardboard inserts or extra padding as needed, so nothing shifts inside.
  5. Weigh the packed mailer before you buy the label. Label prices change at weight breaks: Whatnot's $4.47 label is for packages under 4 oz, and USPS's commercial Ground Advantage price is the same for anything under 1 lb, then goes up (tracker entry). From Nov 4, 2026, Whatnot bills sellers when USPS finds a package heavier than its label (tracker entry).
  6. An eBay card going through Authenticity Guarantee: ship it to the authentication facility shown in the order details, one order per package, and upload tracking through My eBay or Seller Hub so "seller protections can apply" (eBay's announcement, Jul 29, 2026).

A top loader in a plain letter is a different case: it can make the envelope too stiff for USPS's machines, which adds a surcharge (see below).

How to mail a single card as a letter

These are USPS's rules for a letter (DMM 101). An envelope that breaks the size rules isn't a letter, and one that breaks the machinable rules pays a $0.49 surcharge.

  1. Size: 5 to 11½ in. long, 3½ to 6⅛ in. high, no more than ¼ in. thick.
  2. Flexible and even: the envelope has to bend easily and keep an even thickness. USPS counts a letter as nonmachinable if it is "too rigid," if its contents make the thickness uneven, if it is enclosed in plastic or has clasps, strings or buttons. A length-to-height ratio under 1.3 or over 2.5 also makes it nonmachinable, so a square envelope pays the surcharge.
  3. Address along the long side. An address that runs parallel to the short side also makes a letter nonmachinable.
  4. Weigh the sealed envelope. Up to 1 oz takes one Forever stamp ($0.82). Each extra ounce adds $0.29: $1.11 up to 2 oz, $1.40 up to 3 oz, $1.69 up to 3.5 oz. Two Forever stamps on a 2 oz letter overpay by $0.53. Over 3.5 oz, USPS charges large-envelope (flat) prices.
  5. Expect no tracking or insurance. USPS lists neither for letters, and 1-5 days for delivery. Certified Mail adds delivery confirmation for $5.55 more ($6.37 for a 1 oz stamped letter).

Top loaders and the $0.49 surcharge

USPS doesn't mention trading cards or top loaders. What its rules cover is how the envelope behaves: if a card holder makes the envelope too stiff to bend, or leaves a lump, the letter is nonmachinable and the $0.49 surcharge applies (Notice 123). That makes a 1 oz letter $1.31 with stamps or $1.27 metered. The platforms say the same thing in their own words: eBay standard envelope takes up to 2 cards in top loaders but the envelope must be "not too rigid," and Whatnot's FCML rules say not to use rigid cardboard or stiff inserts that don't bend.

Stamped or metered?

USPS has two letter prices: one for stamps and a Metered Mail price for letters with metered postage (DMM 133). Metered postage comes from a postage meter or a PC Postage product, which USPS groups as "postage evidencing systems" (DMM 604). Metered is $0.04 cheaper at every weight. Both went up $0.04 at every weight on Jul 12, 2026, when the Forever stamp moved from $0.78 to $0.82 (tracker entry). What could change next is on the USPS prices for 2027 page.

Selling cards on eBay: standard envelope

eBay standard envelope is eBay's own letter-rate label for small, light items, bought through eBay Labels. The rules on eBay's help page (checked Oct 14, 2026):

  • Price cap: items selling for $20 or less, not counting tax.
  • Trading cards: no more than 24 raw cards per envelope, no more than 2 cards in top loaders, and no graded cards.
  • Envelope: at least 3.5 × 5 in., no larger than 6.125 × 11.5 in., an even thickness under 0.25 in., not too rigid, up to 3 oz, no plastic, no clasps or strings, and the address parallel to the longest side.
  • Tracking: printed on the label and shown in My eBay and Seller Hub. No acceptance scan is needed, so you can drop it in a mailbox. eBay notes the number doesn't show up on the usual carrier tracking sites.
  • Protection: $20 on a single-item order and up to $50 on combined orders. For a lost envelope you wait 30 days to claim, and must claim within 90 days of buying the label.

Price: $0.78 up to 1 oz, $1.07 up to 2 oz, $1.36 up to 3 oz, per eBay's rate notice and Seller Center page (see the note on eBay's help page above).

What you keep from a cheap card on eBay with free shipping, by how you ship it. eBay fees for trading cards (13.25% of the total + $0.30 per order up to $10.00, $0.40 above) from eBay's fee page as of Oct 14, 2026, computed with the same code as the eBay fee calculator. Below the fee row: what you keep after fees and the label. No sales tax, no item cost. * Standard envelope at eBay's notice price ($0.82 at 1 oz on its help page). † USPS's published price, an upper bound for eBay sellers (see below).

Ground Advantage, 4 oz, Zone 4, at USPS's published commercial price ($7.86)† -$3.82$0.51$4.75

On a $10 card, a letter leaves you $7.55 to $7.59. A tracked 4 oz Ground Advantage label bought at USPS's published commercial price would leave $0.51; through eBay Labels you'd usually keep more, because eBay prices most labels below USPS commercial pricing. Try your own prices in the eBay fee calculator.

† eBay Labels sets its own Ground Advantage prices. When USPS changed how it prices packages under 1 lb on Jul 12, 2026, eBay kept its 4 weight tiers under 1 lb (eBay's rate notice). It raised Ground Advantage labels up to 2 lb by $0.10 in Zones 1-8 on Sep 19, 2026 (tracker entry). From Oct 4, 2026 to Jan 17, 2027 it isn't adding USPS's holiday increase for packages up to 20 lb in Zones 1-8 (tracker entry). eBay doesn't publish its 4 oz price in these notices; eBay Labels shows it before you buy.

Selling cards on Whatnot: FCML and small labels

FCML (First-Class Mail Letter, which Whatnot also calls plain white envelope) is an optional Whatnot shipping service for card and sticker orders. Since Jul 31, 2026, labels cost $0.78 up to 1 oz, $1.09 up to 2 oz, $1.39 up to 3 oz (Whatnot help, checked Oct 14, 2026; tracker entry). The 1 oz label is the USPS metered price; at 2 and 3 oz Whatnot adds $0.02 and $0.03, which it describes as a small operational fee.

  • Which orders qualify: items in Trading Card Games, Sports Cards or Stickers, sold during a live show that had FCML turned on before it started. The shipment must hold 5 items or fewer, weigh 3 oz or less, be worth $20 or less in total and go to a US address. Custom shipping profiles and max bundle sizes don't qualify.
  • When it stops qualifying: Whatnot moves the shipment to Ground Advantage or Priority Mail automatically.
  • Envelope: the same USPS letter rules as above. Whatnot says not to use bubble mailers, rigid cardboard or stiff inserts, plastic sleeves as outer packaging, or clasps, strings and buttons.
  • Tracking: up to 3 updates, shown only in Whatnot's order details, not on the USPS website. Whatnot asks you to scan each envelope with its in-app scanner at drop-off as proof of shipment.
  • Payout: standard payout starts 10 days after you create the label, because tracking is limited.

Too heavy or too valuable for FCML? Whatnot prices Ground Advantage under 1 lb by weight only: $4.47 under 4 oz, against $7.33 to $8.95 at USPS's published commercial prices (Whatnot help; tracker entry). Buyers usually pay Whatnot shipping. From Nov 4, 2026, USPS charges for packages heavier than their Whatnot label go to the seller, so weigh the packed envelope or box before you buy the label (tracker entry).

Whatnot charges its commission on the item price only, plus 2.9% + $0.30 payment processing on everything the buyer pays. Run your numbers in the Whatnot fee calculator or compare it with eBay in Whatnot vs eBay fees.

Selling a card for $200 or more

eBay Authenticity Guarantee. eBay's Authenticity Guarantee now covers eligible single trading cards, raw or graded, priced at $200 and up (it was $250), for CCG, non-sport and sports card singles on ebay.com. The sold card ships to PSA's authentication facility instead of to the buyer, at no extra cost to you. Each of these orders ships on its own: eBay doesn't support combined shipping for them (tracker entry, from eBay's announcement of Jul 29, 2026). Standard envelope stops at $20, so it never applies to these cards.

Whatnot's 0% commission above $1,500. Since Jan 14, 2026, Whatnot charges no commission on the part of an order above $1,500 in select categories. For cards that means Trading Card Games, Entertainment Cards and the Sports Singles subcategories; sports breaks and Surprise Products are excluded. Payment processing still applies to the full amount, and Whatnot calls it a limited-time promotion (Whatnot help; tracker entry). On a $2,000 single at the 8% standard tier, commission is $120 instead of $160.

Total platform fees on one card, no shipping charged and no sales tax. eBay: trading cards 13.25% + per-order fee. Whatnot: 8% standard-tier commission + 2.9% + $0.30 processing. Fee pages as of Oct 14, 2026; computed with the same code as the eBay and Whatnot calculators.

  • A card sold off-platform, no tracking needed: a letter with one Forever stamp, $0.82 up to 1 oz.
  • An eBay sale of $20 or less: eBay standard envelope, from $0.78 per eBay's July rate notice ($0.82 on its help page), with eBay's limited tracking and $20 protection.
  • A Whatnot live-show order of up to 5 cards, 3 oz and $20: FCML, from $0.78. Over those limits, Whatnot's Ground Advantage label ($4.47 under 4 oz).
  • Anything that needs USPS Tracking and insurance: the cheapest USPS option is Ground Advantage, $7.33 to $8.95 for 4 oz at commercial prices, with up to $100 insurance included. Platform labels cost less: Whatnot's is $4.47 under 4 oz, and eBay says eBay Labels prices are below USPS commercial pricing for most shipments. If delivery confirmation without insurance is enough, a stamped letter with Certified Mail is $6.37.
  • An eligible single card of $200 or more on eBay: it goes through Authenticity Guarantee and ships on its own to the authenticator (packing steps above).

Common questions

How much does it cost to mail one trading card?

With a stamp, $0.82: one Forever stamp covers a letter up to 1 oz. With metered postage it's $0.78. Each extra ounce adds $0.29, up to 3.5 oz. A letter that is too stiff to bend or lumpy pays USPS's $0.49 nonmachinable surcharge on top. Prices from USPS Notice 123, in effect since Jul 12, 2026.

Can I mail a card in a top loader with just a stamp?

USPS doesn't mention top loaders. Its rules say a letter that is too rigid to bend easily, or whose contents make its thickness uneven, is nonmachinable and pays the $0.49 surcharge, so a 1 oz stamped letter would cost $1.31. eBay standard envelope allows up to 2 cards in top loaders as long as the envelope isn't too rigid; Whatnot's FCML rules say not to use rigid cardboard or stiff inserts that don't bend.

Does a stamped envelope have tracking?

No. USPS lists no tracking for First-Class Mail letters; it offers delivery confirmation only if you add a service such as Certified Mail ($5.55 on top of postage, so $6.37 for a 1 oz stamped letter). eBay standard envelope and Whatnot FCML labels carry their own limited tracking, shown inside eBay or Whatnot.

What is the cheapest tracked way to ship a card?

The cheapest USPS option with USPS Tracking and up to $100 insurance included is a 4 oz commercial Ground Advantage label: $7.33 to $8.95 in Zones 1-8 (holiday prices until Jan 17, 2027). A stamped 1 oz letter with Certified Mail gets delivery confirmation for $6.37 ($6.86 if the letter is nonmachinable), but no insurance. Platform labels cost less: on Whatnot, Ground Advantage under 4 oz is $4.47, and eBay says eBay Labels prices are below USPS commercial pricing for most shipments. For eBay items selling for $20 or less, eBay standard envelope is $0.78 at 1 oz per eBay's July rate notice ($0.82 on its help page), with eBay's limited tracking.

What does eBay standard envelope cost?

eBay's rate notice for Jul 12, 2026 and its Seller Center page list $0.78 (1 oz), $1.07 (2 oz), $1.36 (3 oz). eBay's help page for the service shows $0.82, $1.11, $1.40. eBay Labels shows the price before you buy. The service is for items selling for $20 or less (not counting tax), in envelopes up to 3 oz.

Will stamp prices go up again soon?

Possibly in January 2027, but nothing is set yet. A Postal Regulatory Commission order of Aug 21, 2026 lets USPS file in October 2026 for January 2027 prices, and no filing had been found as of Oct 14, 2026. The commission caps the average First-Class Mail increase at 2.105% (its rate-authority table of Oct 14, 2026). That cap is a volume-weighted average across the whole class, so a single price such as the Forever stamp can rise by more or less than 2.105%. A commission rule also allows at most one stamp price increase per fiscal year (price cuts and very small increases aside) through Sep 30, 2030.

Whatnot will bill sellers for USPS weight adjustments from Nov 4

For US shipments sent on or after November 4, 2026, USPS charges for packages that weigh more than their Whatnot-generated label go to the seller's Whatnot ledger. Until now Whatnot absorbed them. For now Whatnot still covers dimension and hazmat adjustments, and it doesn't pass on UPS adjustments yet. Sellers whose first sale was on or after Sept 5, 2026 aren't part of this rollout, and neither are sellers who use their own labels.
