What it costs to sell and ship jewelry
On a $200 piece, eBay takes $30.40 (15% of the total plus the per-order fee), Mercari $20.00, Whatnot $22.10, TikTok Shop $10.00 for gold or diamond jewelry, and Poshmark $40.00, before shipping. A small padded package up to 4 oz ships by Ground Advantage for $7.33 to $8.95 at USPS commercial prices (Zones 1-8); insuring $1,000 adds $15.05, and above $5,000 regular USPS insurance stops and Registered Mail takes over.
eBay's jewelry rate falls to 9% of the whole total above $5,000 (eBay fees for jewelry works through that line), Whatnot charges 0% commission above $1,500 on Jewelry & Watches (Whatnot's help page as checked Oct 14, 2026), and Mercari caps most listings at $2,000. Below: fees at $30, $200, $1,000 and $6,000, small-package postage, insurance up to $5,000, Registered Mail above it, and what USPS needs to pay a claim.

Here the buyer pays the commercial Ground Advantage price for 4 oz to Zone 4 and all of it goes on the label. eBay, Mercari, Etsy, Amazon and TikTok Shop take their percentage from buyer-paid shipping too, and Whatnot's and Depop's processing fees cover it; Poshmark buyers pay Poshmark's own label instead.

- $6,000: with buyer-paid shipping, Whatnot leaves $5,705.47 and Poshmark $4,800.00, a gap of $905.47.
- eBay: eBay's rate covers “Jewelry & Watches (except Watches, Parts & Accessories)”; watches have their own schedule (eBay fee page).
- Whatnot: Jewelry & Watches is on Whatnot's list for 0% commission above $1,500: “Starting at 12:00am EST on June 4th, 2026, Whatnot extended this promotion to include individual orders in Bags & Accessories and Jewelry & Watches” (Whatnot, as checked Oct 14, 2026).
- TikTok Shop: TikTok Shop lists Diamond, Gold, Jade, Platinum and Ruby, Sapphire & Emerald jewelry at 5%, and silver, pearl, other stones and costume jewelry at 6% (TikTok Shop Academy). The table uses 5%.
- Etsy: “Reselling is not allowed on Etsy except for the following items that are handpicked or sourced by sellers” (Etsy, as checked Oct 14, 2026), and vintage means “handpicked items that are over 20 years old”. A piece of jewelry made in the last 20 years can't be resold there, so the Etsy row applies to vintage pieces only.
- Amazon isn't in the table: this site tracks Amazon's media fees only. Amazon's pricing page lists Jewelry at 20% of the total sales price up to $250 and 5% of any part above, with a $0.30 minimum (Amazon, saved copy Oct 14, 2026), and “A product's fee category may not be the same as the category that appears to customers in the Amazon store”. Whether a used piece of jewelry can be listed there depends on Amazon's own condition and category rules, which this page doesn't cover.
- eBay's rule for this category word for word, the price where its rate changes, and a worked example with shipping and sales tax are on eBay fees for jewelry; this page covers the other platforms and the shipping.
- eBay also charges its percentage on sales tax, which the tables leave out: eBay fees on sales tax.
- Whatnot's commission falls at higher four-week sales tiers; the tables use the standard tier, 8% in every category except Coins (Whatnot's fee page as checked Oct 14, 2026).
- § Etsy and Whatnot: the rates, and the Etsy and Whatnot rules quoted on this page, are from each platform's own help pages as checked Oct 14, 2026. Those help centers block automated checks, so we couldn't re-check them for this update; confirm on the platform before you price around them. Etsy, Inc.'s annual report for 2025 gives the same $0.20 listing fee and 6.5% transaction fee on item plus shipping (Form 10-K, filed Feb 19, 2026).

Shipping jewelry: USPS prices by weight
Media Mail is limited by what's inside, not by size: “Only these items may be mailed at the Media Mail prices” (DMM 173.4.1). The list is books, 16 mm films, printed music, test materials, sound and video recordings, playscripts and manuscripts, printed educational charts, medical loose-leaf pages and computer-readable media. Anything else pays parcel prices, and “If you try to include anything that's not allowed, you (or your recipient) will have to pay higher postage rates” (USPS). USPS can check: “the mailing of articles at Media Mail or Library Mail prices constitutes consent by the mailer to postal inspection of the contents” (DMM 173.2.2).
That leaves USPS Ground Advantage as the tracked option: packages up to 70 lb, with USPS Tracking and up to $100 of insurance included (USPS).
Jewelry isn't on that list.

Platform labels
A label bought through a selling platform follows that platform's price list. These are the label prices on our change tracker for the platforms above, from each platform's own page; each note says when that page was checked if it wasn't re-checked for this update.
- Whatnot. Since Jul 31, 2026, Whatnot's default label is Ground Advantage: $4.47 under 4 oz, $4.85 under 8 oz, $5.25 under 12 oz, $6.75 under 16 oz, and $7.75 for 1-5 lb at any distance (Whatnot's help page as checked Oct 14, 2026; tracker entry). Over that, Whatnot says “Packages over 5 lbs use zone-based Ground Advantage commercial pricing” (Whatnot, as checked Oct 14, 2026), and it warns: “Using Priority Mail or Flat Rate packaging with Ground Advantage labels may result in returned packages and USPS fees of approximately $20 per package”. Buyers usually pay Whatnot shipping.
- Mercari. Since Oct 19, 2026, Best-rate Ground Advantage labels cost $7.99 at 1 lb (was $7.48) and $13.99 at 3 lb (was $12.83). Packages over 1 cu ft or longer than 22 in. pay Standard rates: 1 lb goes from $7.59 to $8.99 (tracker entry).
- Poshmark. Buyers pay for Poshmark's standard label, which covers packages up to 5 lb. Heavier packages need an upgrade that you pay: $5.00 for 5.01-10 lb and $10.00 for 10.01-15 lb. From Oct 26, 2026, Poshmark deducts the upgrade even if you ship on the standard label (Poshmark; tracker entry). Every package on this page is 5 lb or less.
- eBay Labels and other label services use their own prices; this page uses USPS's published prices so every platform is compared on the same postage.
Insurance and signature on jewelry
“Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, and USPS Ground Advantage include $100.00 of insurance coverage” (DMM 503, Exhibit 1.4.1); Media Mail isn't on that list and includes none. Beyond that, “additional insurance may be purchased for no more than a maximum coverage of $5,000.00” (DMM 503.4.2), and “Insurance coverage only covers the actual value of mail contents” (USPS). “Insurance fees are based on the item's declared value” (USPS). “An item insured for more than $500.00 receives a delivery scan ... and USPS provides a signature as the delivery record to the mailer electronically” (DMM 503.4.3.1). Under that, Signature Confirmation costs $4.15 online or $5.15 at the counter (Notice 123).
| Declared value | Ground Advantage insurance fee | Registered Mail fee | Delivery signature |
|---|---|---|---|
| $30 | included (up to $100) | $21.50 | Signature Confirmation, $4.15 online |
| $200 | $4.50 | $25.00 | Signature Confirmation, $4.15 online |
| $1,000 | $15.05 | $28.10 | included with insurance over $500 |
| $6,000 | over the $5,000 limit | $43.60 | included with insurance over $500 |
- Insured for more than $500, the buyer “may be required to show an acceptable primary ID before USPS will deliver the mailpiece” (USPS).
- Over $5,000, regular USPS insurance stops: “additional insurance may be purchased for no more than a maximum coverage of $5,000.00” (DMM 503.4.2). Registered Mail goes further: “Postal insurance is included in the fee for articles with a value of at least $0.01 up to a maximum insured value of $50,000.00” (DMM 503.2.1.1). It has its own rules: you “present Registered Mail items for mailing to a Postal employee” (USPS); USPS won't register a piece “Presented for mailing in a padded envelope; envelope or mailer manufactured of spun-bonded olefin, such as Tyvek; plastic envelope or mailer” (DMM 503.2.1.1); “Packages must be sealed with mucilage or glue or with plain paper or cloth tape” (DMM 503.2.3.3); and jewelry and merchandise are declared at “Market value or cost” (DMM 503.2.2.1).
- Etsy: for cases opened from May 7, 2026, Purchase Protection pays up to $250 of an eligible order's refund and the seller is charged the rest; Etsy suggests shipping insurance for orders over $250 (Etsy's help page as checked Oct 14, 2026; tracker entry).
Platform rules that apply to jewelry
Whatnot: 0% commission above $1,500
“Whatnot charges 0% base commission on the portion of a sale above 1,500” (Whatnot, as checked Oct 14, 2026), and “Sellers will still be charged the payment processing fee for the full transaction value”. A $6,000 piece pays $294.30 in Whatnot fees instead of $654.30.
Mercari: authentication, no certificate, a price limit
Jewelry is one of Mercari Authenticate's categories: “When you list a handbag, wallet, jewelry, watch, glasses, or pair of shoes over $100, authentication is completely optional unless you list over the required Authentication dollar amount for that category and brand of item” (Mercari). “We charge a flat $5 for each designer item you submit for authentication” (Mercari), but “Jewelry and watches are not eligible for a certificate” (Mercari). On price, “When you purchase or list on Mercari, there's usually a $2,000 price limit” (Mercari), and “When you want to list or purchase items verified with Authenticate at up to $5,000, we'll ask you to complete an additional identity verification”. A $6,000 piece is over both limits.
Posh Authenticate
“Only select luxury items sold for $500 or higher qualify for Posh Authenticate. All categories qualify, except for Electronics, Home, Pets, Toys, and Games” (Poshmark). “Posh Authenticate is a free service for qualifying orders for both sellers and buyers” (Poshmark). If the piece can't be verified, “the order is cancelled and a full refund will be immediately processed. The item will then be returned to the seller and it won't be eligible to be relisted” (Poshmark).
Etsy and TikTok Shop
Etsy takes vintage jewelry only: “Reselling is not allowed on Etsy except for the following items that are handpicked or sourced by sellers” (Etsy, as checked Oct 14, 2026), and vintage means “handpicked items that are over 20 years old”. TikTok Shop's rate depends on the material: 5% for gold, diamond and the other fine-jewelry subcategories it lists at 5%, 6% for silver, pearl and costume jewelry (TikTok Shop Academy).
Packing jewelry
From USPS's packaging standards (DMM 601.3) and its packing steps (USPS: How to send a package):
- Wrap each piece: USPS doesn't pay claims for “Damage by abrasion, scarring, or scraping to articles not properly wrapped for protection” (DMM 609.4.3).
- Several pieces in one package: “When multiple items are inside a single mailing container, mailers must cushion items to protect them from each other as well as from external forces” (DMM 601.3.13).
- Not in a plain paper envelope: DMM 601.3.3 says small odd-shaped items are “not permitted in letter-size or flat-size paper envelopes unless they are wrapped within the other contents of the envelope” (DMM 601.3.3).
- Registered Mail over $5,000 has its own packaging rules: no padded or plastic mailers, and seals of glue or paper or cloth tape (see the insurance notes).
- “Use enough 2-inch-wide packing tape to close and secure all seams” (USPS).
Edge cases
Above $5,000: Registered Mail
Regular USPS insurance ends at $5,000. Registered Mail includes insurance up to $50,000, on top of postage: $43.60 for a $6,000 piece, $56.00 for $10,000, $102.50 for $25,000 and $180.00 for $50,000 (Notice 123). It can ride on Priority Mail, First-Class Mail or Ground Advantage (DMM 503, Exhibit 1.4.1), and you have to hand it to a Post Office employee.
If an insured piece is lost or damaged
USPS pays only with proof of value: “Either the mailer or the addressee must submit acceptable proof to establish the cost or value of the article at the time it was mailed” (DMM 609.3.2). Its examples include “A sales receipt, paid invoice or bill of sale, or statement of value from a reputable dealer”, and “For Internet transactions conducted through a Web-based payment network that offers payment services through a stored value account”, it asks you to “provide a computer printout of the online transaction identifying the purchaser and seller, price paid, date of transaction, description of item purchased” (DMM 609.3.2). For damage, “the addressee must retain the mailing container, including any damaged articles, all packaging, and any contents received” (DMM 609.2.0), and “customers should file a claim immediately but must file no later than 60 days from the date of mailing” (DMM 609.1.4). A lost insured package can be claimed from 15 days to 60 days after mailing (DMM 609.1.4).
A ring in a plain envelope
A ring in an envelope with stamps fails the flat rules: a flat must be “uniformly thick so that any bumps, protrusions, or other irregularities do not cause more than 1/4-inch variance in thickness” (DMM 101.2.4). As a padded Ground Advantage parcel up to 4 oz it costs $7.33 to $8.95 at commercial prices and $8.40 to $10.20 at the counter, with tracking.
Signature and ID over $500
“An item insured for more than $500.00 receives a delivery scan ... and USPS provides a signature as the delivery record to the mailer electronically” (DMM 503.4.3.1), and the recipient “may be required to show an acceptable primary ID before USPS will deliver the mailpiece” (USPS). Under $500, Signature Confirmation is $4.15 online.
Questions
What does a $200 piece cost to sell on each app?
Before shipping: TikTok Shop $10.00 (gold, diamond and the other 5% fine-jewelry rows), Mercari $20.00, Whatnot $22.10, Etsy $19.45 (vintage only), eBay $30.40 and Poshmark $40.00. eBay's rate and its $5,000 line: eBay fees for jewelry.
What proof do I need if an insured ring is lost?
Proof of what it was worth: “Either the mailer or the addressee must submit acceptable proof to establish the cost or value of the article at the time it was mailed” (DMM 609.3.2). USPS's examples include “A sales receipt, paid invoice or bill of sale, or statement of value from a reputable dealer”, and, for a sale paid through an online payment account, a printout showing buyer, seller, price, date and item (DMM 609.3.2). File a lost-package claim no sooner than 15 days and no later than 60 days after mailing (DMM 609.1.4).
How much does it cost to ship a ring?
In a padded mailer up to 4 oz: $7.33 to $8.95 by commercial Ground Advantage (Zones 1-8), with tracking and $100 of insurance included. Insuring a $1,000 ring for full value adds $15.05.
How do I insure jewelry worth more than $5,000?
With Registered Mail: “Postal insurance is included in the fee for articles with a value of at least $0.01 up to a maximum insured value of $50,000.00” (DMM 503.2.1.1). The fee for a $6,000 piece is $43.60. You “present Registered Mail items for mailing to a Postal employee”, declare its “Market value or cost” (DMM 503.2.2.1), and avoid padded or plastic mailers.
Can I sell jewelry over $2,000 on Mercari?
Up to $5,000 if the piece is verified with Mercari Authenticate and you complete an identity check: “When you want to list or purchase items verified with Authenticate at up to $5,000, we'll ask you to complete an additional identity verification” (Mercari).
Can I sell vintage jewelry on Etsy?
Yes, if it's over 20 years old: Etsy allows reselling of “handpicked items that are over 20 years old” (Etsy, as checked Oct 14, 2026). Newer pieces you didn't make aren't allowed.
