What it costs to sell and ship comic books

On a $20 comic, eBay takes $3.05 (its 13.25% rate for Comic Books & Memorabilia), Mercari $2.00, Whatnot $2.48 and TikTok Shop $1.00 for a pre-owned comic, before shipping. Single issues with paid ads don't qualify for Media Mail, so one comic in a rigid mailer goes by Ground Advantage for $7.33 to $8.95 at USPS commercial prices (Zones 1-8); a graphic novel with no ads can go by Media Mail from $4.39.

Below: fees at $5, $20, $75 and $400, buyer-paid shipping, postage for a single, a slab and a box of books, the large-envelope rule, and insurance on a key issue.

Here the buyer pays the commercial Ground Advantage price for 8 oz to Zone 4 and all of it goes on the label. eBay, Mercari, Etsy, Amazon and TikTok Shop take their percentage from buyer-paid shipping too, and Whatnot's and Depop's processing fees cover it; Poshmark buyers pay Poshmark's own label instead.

  • $400: with buyer-paid shipping, TikTok Shop leaves $379.61 and eBay $345.56, a gap of $34.05.
  • eBay: eBay's fee page lists “Select Collectibles categories: Comic Books & Memorabilia” at the 13.25% rate it also uses for trading cards (eBay fee page).
  • Whatnot: Comics & Anime is on Whatnot's list for 0% commission above $1,500 (Whatnot, as checked Oct 14, 2026).
  • TikTok Shop: TikTok Shop lists Pre-Owned Collectible Comic Books at 5% (TikTok Shop Academy).
  • Etsy: “Reselling is not allowed on Etsy except for the following items that are handpicked or sourced by sellers” (Etsy, as checked Oct 14, 2026), and vintage means “handpicked items that are over 20 years old”. A comic book made in the last 20 years can't be resold there, so the Etsy row applies to vintage pieces only.
  • Amazon isn't in the table: Amazon's media category covers “Media - Books, DVD, Music, Software, Video” at 15% plus a $1.80 closing fee (Amazon), the math in our Amazon media calculator, which applies to collected editions sold as books.
  • eBay's rule for this category word for word, the price where its rate changes, and a worked example with shipping and sales tax are on eBay fees for comic books; this page covers the other platforms and the shipping.
  • eBay also charges its percentage on sales tax, which the tables leave out: eBay fees on sales tax.
  • Whatnot's commission falls at higher four-week sales tiers; the tables use the standard tier, 8% in every category except Coins (Whatnot's fee page as checked Oct 14, 2026).
  • § Whatnot and Etsy: the rates, and the Whatnot and Etsy rules quoted on this page, are from each platform's own help pages as checked Oct 14, 2026. Those help centers block automated checks, so we couldn't re-check them for this update; confirm on the platform before you price around them. Etsy, Inc.'s annual report for 2025 gives the same $0.20 listing fee and 6.5% transaction fee on item plus shipping (Form 10-K, filed Feb 19, 2026).

Shipping a comic book: USPS prices by weight

A comic counts as a book for Media Mail only if it meets DMM 173.4.1a: “Books ... of at least eight printed pages, consisting wholly of reading matter or scholarly bibliography, or reading matter with incidental blank spaces for notations and containing no advertising matter other than incidental announcements of books” (DMM 173.4.1a). And “Advertising includes paid advertising and the publishers' own advertising in display, classified, or editorial style” (DMM 173.4.1a). A single issue that carries paid ads doesn't meet that standard; a collected edition or graphic novel with no ads beyond announcements of other books can.

USPS can check: “the mailing of articles at Media Mail or Library Mail prices constitutes consent by the mailer to postal inspection of the contents” (DMM 173.2.2), and “If you try to include anything that's not allowed, you (or your recipient) will have to pay higher postage rates” (USPS). Comics that don't qualify go by Ground Advantage, with USPS Tracking and up to $100 of insurance included.

In practice: a modern single issue with ad pages goes by Ground Advantage; a trade paperback or hardcover collection without ads can go by Media Mail. If you're not sure a book qualifies, Ground Advantage avoids postage due.

USPS Notice 123 effective Oct 4, 2026. Each weight is "not over"; Media Mail is priced by the pound, rounded up. Commercial prices are USPS's published prices for labels bought online; retail is the Post Office counter. Ground Advantage prices include USPS's temporary holiday add-on until Jan 17, 2027; Media Mail has none. Weights are examples: weigh your packed item.

Platform labels

A label bought through a selling platform follows that platform's price list. These are the label prices on our change tracker for the platforms above, from each platform's own page; each note says when that page was checked if it wasn't re-checked for this update.

  • Whatnot. Since Jul 31, 2026, Whatnot's default label is Ground Advantage: $4.47 under 4 oz, $4.85 under 8 oz, $5.25 under 12 oz, $6.75 under 16 oz, and $7.75 for 1-5 lb at any distance (Whatnot's help page as checked Oct 14, 2026; tracker entry). Over that, Whatnot says “Packages over 5 lbs use zone-based Ground Advantage commercial pricing” (Whatnot, as checked Oct 14, 2026), and it warns: “Using Priority Mail or Flat Rate packaging with Ground Advantage labels may result in returned packages and USPS fees of approximately $20 per package”. Buyers usually pay Whatnot shipping.
  • Mercari. Since Oct 19, 2026, Best-rate Ground Advantage labels cost $7.99 at 1 lb (was $7.48) and $13.99 at 3 lb (was $12.83). Packages over 1 cu ft or longer than 22 in. pay Standard rates: 1 lb goes from $7.59 to $8.99 (tracker entry).
  • Mercari Media Mail. Since Oct 19, 2026, Mercari's prepaid Media Mail labels cost $4.47 for 1 lb, $5.22 for 2 lb, $5.97 for 3 lb, against USPS's own $4.39, $5.13, $5.86 (tracker entry).
  • eBay Labels and other label services use their own prices; this page uses USPS's published prices so every platform is compared on the same postage.

Insurance and signature on a comic book

“Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, and USPS Ground Advantage include $100.00 of insurance coverage” (DMM 503, Exhibit 1.4.1); Media Mail isn't on that list and includes none. Beyond that, “additional insurance may be purchased for no more than a maximum coverage of $5,000.00” (DMM 503.4.2), and “Insurance coverage only covers the actual value of mail contents” (USPS). “Insurance fees are based on the item's declared value” (USPS). “An item insured for more than $500.00 receives a delivery scan ... and USPS provides a signature as the delivery record to the mailer electronically” (DMM 503.4.3.1). Under that, Signature Confirmation costs $4.15 online or $5.15 at the counter (Notice 123).

USPS insurance fees for insuring the full sale price, Notice 123 effective Oct 4, 2026 (fee for the coverage amount; $2.80 for up to $50, then by band; $9.05 plus $1.50 per $100 over $600). Registered Mail is a separate service that includes insurance up to $50,000.
Declared value Ground Advantage insurance fee Media Mail insurance fee Registered Mail fee Delivery signature
$5 included (up to $100) $2.80 $21.50 Signature Confirmation, $4.15 online
$20 included (up to $100) $2.80 $21.50 Signature Confirmation, $4.15 online
$75 included (up to $100) $3.50 $21.50 Signature Confirmation, $4.15 online
$400 $6.05 $6.05 $25.00 Signature Confirmation, $4.15 online
  • Insured for more than $500, the buyer “may be required to show an acceptable primary ID before USPS will deliver the mailpiece” (USPS).
  • Etsy: for cases opened from May 7, 2026, Purchase Protection pays up to $250 of an eligible order's refund and the seller is charged the rest; Etsy suggests shipping insurance for orders over $250 (Etsy's help page as checked Oct 14, 2026; tracker entry).

Platform rules that apply to comic books

eBay: the collectibles rate, not the general one

Comics pay 13.25% on eBay, not the 13.6% most-categories rate: $10.34 on a $75 comic against $10.60. eBay's wording, the per-order fee and a worked example with shipping and sales tax are on eBay fees for comic books.

Whatnot: 0% commission above $1,500 on Comics & Anime

Comics & Anime is on Whatnot's list: “Whatnot charges 0% base commission on the portion of a sale above 1,500” (Whatnot, as checked Oct 14, 2026), and “Sellers will still be charged the payment processing fee for the full transaction value”. A $2,000 key issue sold there pays $178.30 instead of $218.30; Whatnot says “This is a limited-time promotion”.

TikTok Shop: 5% for pre-owned comics

TikTok Shop lists Pre-Owned Collectible Comic Books at 5% (TikTok Shop Academy), and “The Referral Fee calculation base includes the shipping fee paid by the customer” (TikTok Shop Academy). A $400 book pays $20.00 before shipping.

Etsy: comics over 20 years old

“Reselling is not allowed on Etsy except for the following items that are handpicked or sourced by sellers” (Etsy, as checked Oct 14, 2026), and vintage means “handpicked items that are over 20 years old”. Sold in October 2026, a book has to be from before October 2006; a recent issue can't be resold there.

Packing a comic book

From USPS's packaging standards (DMM 601.3) and its packing steps (USPS: How to send a package):

  1. Bag and board the comic, then use a rigid mailer or a box: “Mailers must package mailpieces to withstand normal transit and handling without breakage or deterioration of content” (DMM 601.3.1.1).
  2. Pack a graded slab so a drop can't reach it. USPS doesn't pay claims for “Damage caused by shock, transportation environment, or x-ray, without evidence of damage to the mailing container” (DMM 609.4.3), so a slab that cracks inside an undamaged box falls under that exclusion.
  3. Several books in one box: “When multiple items are inside a single mailing container, mailers must cushion items to protect them from each other as well as from external forces” (DMM 601.3.13).
  4. Collected editions are books under DMM 601.3.8: printed matter “more than one inch thick or one pound must not be accepted in letter-style non-reinforced flat envelopes or without packaging” (DMM 601.3.8).
  5. “Use enough 2-inch-wide packing tape to close and secure all seams” (USPS).

Edge cases

Single issues and the advertising rule

The Media Mail book standard allows no advertising other than incidental announcements of books, and “Advertising includes paid advertising and the publishers' own advertising in display, classified, or editorial style” (DMM 173.4.1a). Most modern single issues carry paid ad pages, so they fail it even with 8 or more pages. Postage due can then fall on your buyer: “If you try to include anything that's not allowed, you (or your recipient) will have to pay higher postage rates” (USPS).

A single comic as a large envelope

A First-Class Mail large envelope costs $2.56 at 4 oz (Notice 123), well under a parcel. It has to stay a flat: “Flat-size pieces must be flexible” (DMM 101.2.3), and pieces that fail the flexibility or thickness tests are “considered parcels and must pay the applicable parcel prices” (DMM 101.2.5). A comic in a stiff board or rigid mailer won't bend, so it pays parcel prices, and a large envelope has no tracking (USPS).

Graded slabs

A boxed slab under 1 lb costs $7.33 to $8.95 at commercial prices. At exactly 1 lb it's $8.01 to $11.22, and once the box passes 1 lb it pays the 2 lb price, $8.39 to $13.42, so weigh it packed. A $400 slab is past the $100 included with Ground Advantage; full-value insurance costs $6.05.

A box of comics

At 25 lb, Ground Advantage runs $26.37 to $79.94 at commercial prices, Zones 1-8. Media Mail is $22.07, but only if every book in the box qualifies, and single issues with ads don't.

Questions

Can you ship comic books by Media Mail?

Only comics that meet the book standard: “Books ... of at least eight printed pages, consisting wholly of reading matter or scholarly bibliography, or reading matter with incidental blank spaces for notations and containing no advertising matter other than incidental announcements of books” (DMM 173.4.1a). Single issues with paid ads don't; collected editions with no ads can. Otherwise use Ground Advantage: $7.33 to $8.95 for one comic up to 8 oz at commercial prices.

What does a $20 comic cost to sell on each app?

Before shipping: eBay $3.05, Mercari $2.00, Whatnot $2.48, TikTok Shop $1.00 (Pre-Owned) and, for a comic over 20 years old, Etsy $2.35. eBay's rate alone is worked through on eBay fees for comic books.

Can I mail a comic in a regular envelope with stamps?

Only if it stays flexible and evenly thick: “Flat-size pieces must be flexible” (DMM 101.2.3), and pieces that fail are “considered parcels and must pay the applicable parcel prices”. A comic in a stiff board or rigid mailer doesn't qualify. A 4 oz large envelope is $2.56, with no tracking.

How much does it cost to ship a CGC slab?

A boxed slab under 1 lb costs $7.33 to $8.95 by commercial Ground Advantage (Zones 1-8); over 1 lb it pays the 2 lb price, $8.39 to $13.42. Insuring a $400 slab adds $6.05.

Do Whatnot fees drop on expensive comics?

Above $1,500: Comics & Anime pays 0% commission on the part of an order above that, with processing on the full amount (Whatnot, as checked Oct 14, 2026). A $2,000 book pays $178.30 instead of $218.30.
