What it costs to sell and ship a watch
On a $1,500 watch, eBay takes $182.90 (15% of the first $1,000 and 6.5% of the rest), TikTok Shop $75.00 for a pre-owned watch, Mercari $150.00, Whatnot $163.80 and Poshmark $300.00, before shipping. A boxed watch under 1 lb ships by Ground Advantage for $7.33 to $8.95 at USPS commercial prices (Zones 1-8), insuring $1,500 adds $22.55, and a watch that runs on a lithium coin cell falls under USPS's lithium battery rules.
eBay's three-step watch schedule is worked through on eBay fees for watches. Below: fees at $50, $300, $1,500 and $8,000 on six apps, postage, insurance and Registered Mail, what Publication 52 says about coin cells, padded mailers, smartwatches and buyers abroad, and the authentication and price limits on each platform.

Here the buyer pays the commercial Ground Advantage price for 1 lb to Zone 4 and all of it goes on the label. eBay, Mercari, Etsy, Amazon and TikTok Shop take their percentage from buyer-paid shipping too, and Whatnot's and Depop's processing fees cover it; Poshmark buyers pay Poshmark's own label instead.

- eBay: “Jewelry & Watches > Watches, Parts & Accessories” has its own schedule on eBay's fee page, separate from jewelry (eBay fee page).
- Whatnot: Jewelry & Watches is on Whatnot's list for 0% commission above $1,500 (Whatnot, as checked Oct 14, 2026).
- TikTok Shop: TikTok Shop lists Pre-Owned Watches at 5%; Fashion Watches & Accessories outside Pre-Owned are 6% (TikTok Shop Academy).
- Etsy: “Reselling is not allowed on Etsy except for the following items that are handpicked or sourced by sellers” (Etsy, as checked Oct 14, 2026), and vintage means “handpicked items that are over 20 years old”. A watch made in the last 20 years can't be resold there, so the Etsy row applies to vintage pieces only.
- Amazon isn't in the table: this site tracks Amazon's media fees only. Amazon's pricing page lists Watches at 16% of the total sales price up to $1,500 and 3% of any part above, with a $0.30 minimum (Amazon, saved copy Oct 14, 2026), and “A product's fee category may not be the same as the category that appears to customers in the Amazon store”. Whether a used watch can be listed there depends on Amazon's own condition and category rules, which this page doesn't cover.
- eBay's rule for this category word for word, the price where its rate changes, and a worked example with shipping and sales tax are on eBay fees for watches; this page covers the other platforms and the shipping.
- eBay also charges its percentage on sales tax, which the tables leave out: eBay fees on sales tax.
- Whatnot's commission falls at higher four-week sales tiers; the tables use the standard tier, 8% in every category except Coins (Whatnot's fee page as checked Oct 14, 2026).
- § Whatnot and Etsy: the rates, and the Whatnot and Etsy rules quoted on this page, are from each platform's own help pages as checked Oct 14, 2026. Those help centers block automated checks, so we couldn't re-check them for this update; confirm on the platform before you price around them. Etsy, Inc.'s annual report for 2025 gives the same $0.20 listing fee and 6.5% transaction fee on item plus shipping (Form 10-K, filed Feb 19, 2026).

Shipping a watch: USPS prices by weight
Media Mail is limited by what's inside, not by size: “Only these items may be mailed at the Media Mail prices” (DMM 173.4.1). The list is books, 16 mm films, printed music, test materials, sound and video recordings, playscripts and manuscripts, printed educational charts, medical loose-leaf pages and computer-readable media. Anything else pays parcel prices, and “If you try to include anything that's not allowed, you (or your recipient) will have to pay higher postage rates” (USPS). USPS can check: “the mailing of articles at Media Mail or Library Mail prices constitutes consent by the mailer to postal inspection of the contents” (DMM 173.2.2).
That leaves USPS Ground Advantage as the tracked option: packages up to 70 lb, with USPS Tracking and up to $100 of insurance included (USPS).
Watches aren't on that list.

Platform labels
A label bought through a selling platform follows that platform's price list. These are the label prices on our change tracker for the platforms above, from each platform's own page; each note says when that page was checked if it wasn't re-checked for this update.
- Whatnot. Since Jul 31, 2026, Whatnot's default label is Ground Advantage: $4.47 under 4 oz, $4.85 under 8 oz, $5.25 under 12 oz, $6.75 under 16 oz, and $7.75 for 1-5 lb at any distance (Whatnot's help page as checked Oct 14, 2026; tracker entry). Over that, Whatnot says “Packages over 5 lbs use zone-based Ground Advantage commercial pricing” (Whatnot, as checked Oct 14, 2026), and it warns: “Using Priority Mail or Flat Rate packaging with Ground Advantage labels may result in returned packages and USPS fees of approximately $20 per package”. Buyers usually pay Whatnot shipping.
- Mercari. Since Oct 19, 2026, Best-rate Ground Advantage labels cost $7.99 at 1 lb (was $7.48) and $13.99 at 3 lb (was $12.83). Packages over 1 cu ft or longer than 22 in. pay Standard rates: 1 lb goes from $7.59 to $8.99 (tracker entry).
- Poshmark. Buyers pay for Poshmark's standard label, which covers packages up to 5 lb. Heavier packages need an upgrade that you pay: $5.00 for 5.01-10 lb and $10.00 for 10.01-15 lb. From Oct 26, 2026, Poshmark deducts the upgrade even if you ship on the standard label (Poshmark; tracker entry). Every package on this page is 5 lb or less.
- eBay Labels and other label services use their own prices; this page uses USPS's published prices so every platform is compared on the same postage.
Insurance and signature on a watch
“Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, and USPS Ground Advantage include $100.00 of insurance coverage” (DMM 503, Exhibit 1.4.1); Media Mail isn't on that list and includes none. Beyond that, “additional insurance may be purchased for no more than a maximum coverage of $5,000.00” (DMM 503.4.2), and “Insurance coverage only covers the actual value of mail contents” (USPS). “Insurance fees are based on the item's declared value” (USPS). “An item insured for more than $500.00 receives a delivery scan ... and USPS provides a signature as the delivery record to the mailer electronically” (DMM 503.4.3.1). Under that, Signature Confirmation costs $4.15 online or $5.15 at the counter (Notice 123).
| Declared value | Ground Advantage insurance fee | Registered Mail fee | Delivery signature |
|---|---|---|---|
| $50 | included (up to $100) | $21.50 | Signature Confirmation, $4.15 online |
| $300 | $4.55 | $25.00 | Signature Confirmation, $4.15 online |
| $1,500 | $22.55 | $31.20 | included with insurance over $500 |
| $8,000 | over the $5,000 limit | $49.80 | included with insurance over $500 |
- Insured for more than $500, the buyer “may be required to show an acceptable primary ID before USPS will deliver the mailpiece” (USPS).
- Over $5,000, regular USPS insurance stops: “additional insurance may be purchased for no more than a maximum coverage of $5,000.00” (DMM 503.4.2). Registered Mail goes further: “Postal insurance is included in the fee for articles with a value of at least $0.01 up to a maximum insured value of $50,000.00” (DMM 503.2.1.1). It has its own rules: you “present Registered Mail items for mailing to a Postal employee” (USPS); USPS won't register a piece “Presented for mailing in a padded envelope; envelope or mailer manufactured of spun-bonded olefin, such as Tyvek; plastic envelope or mailer” (DMM 503.2.1.1); “Packages must be sealed with mucilage or glue or with plain paper or cloth tape” (DMM 503.2.3.3); and jewelry and merchandise are declared at “Market value or cost” (DMM 503.2.2.1).
- Etsy: for cases opened from May 7, 2026, Purchase Protection pays up to $250 of an eligible order's refund and the seller is charged the rest; Etsy suggests shipping insurance for orders over $250 (Etsy's help page as checked Oct 14, 2026; tracker entry).
- With batteries in the box, USPS says “combining multiple extra services (e.g., signature confirmation and insurance less than or equal to $500) is prohibited when mailing hazardous materials” (Publication 52, 323.2).
Batteries: what USPS Publication 52 requires
Quartz watches and coin cells
Pub 52 defines a button cell as a small round battery “typically used in devices such as watches, calculators, and hearing aids” (Publication 52, 349.2), and says “Mailable button cell batteries must contain no more than 0.3 grams of lithium for lithium metal types and must not exceed 2.7 watt-hours for lithium-ion types” (Publication 52, 349.2). These rules apply only when the cell is lithium; the type is printed on the cell. A mechanical or automatic watch has no battery, and a watch shipped without its cell isn't a lithium battery shipment.
No lithium mark for an installed coin cell
“Mailpieces containing button-cell batteries installed in equipment (including circuit boards) or no more than four lithium cells or two lithium batteries installed in the equipment they operate are excepted” (Publication 52, 349.221(d)). A new watch with its cell installed needs no lithium battery mark. Most lithium battery packages must go in a rigid box, but Publication 52 makes an exception for this case: “The use of padded and poly bags as outer packaging is permitted only when the mailpieces contain button cell batteries” (Publication 52, Packaging Instruction 9D), and only when “the batteries are properly installed in the equipment they are intended to operate, and the batteries are afforded adequate protection by that equipment” (Packaging Instruction 9D). A quartz watch with its coin cell in place fits that wording, so a padded mailer is allowed; a smartwatch's battery isn't a button cell, so it isn't.
A used watch with a lithium cell
Pub 52's definition of a used electronic device covers any device with lithium cells that “Is not new in original packaging; Is not manufacturer-certified new or refurbished; and/or Has some form of damage or defect” (349.21(e)), and it makes no exception for watches. Those packages “must be marked with "Restricted Electronic Device" and "Surface Transportation Only" on the address side of the mailpiece” (Publication 52, 349.221(e)), and “Used, damaged, or defective electronic devices are prohibited from air transportation” (Publication 52, 349 (Domestic Lithium Battery Mailability)); “Mailable hazardous materials that are prohibited from air transportation may not be sent as Priority Mail Express or Priority Mail” (Publication 52, 327.11). A used quartz watch running on a lithium cell fits that wording, so send it by Ground Advantage, not in a Priority Mail box, and declare it when you buy the label: “Mailers must identify whether a shipment contains hazardous materials when generating the label” (Publication 52, 323.1).
Smartwatches
A smartwatch runs on a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, so the device rules apply in full: “Cells must not exceed a 20 Wh rating” (Publication 52, 349.241); “Batteries must not exceed a 100 Wh rating”; “Mailpieces containing lithium batteries must be packaged in rigid outer packaging unless excepted under 339.4” (Publication 52, 349.221(c)); and a used one goes by ground with the two marks above.
If a package isn't declared
- USPS charges $50 on a commercial-price package when it finds hazardous materials that weren't declared and labeled (Notice 123: HAZMAT Noncompliance Fee; tracker entry). The Ground Advantage HAZMAT Handling Fee is $0.00.
- Mercari: for packages postmarked from Sep 1, 2026, Mercari pays $25 of that fee and takes $25 from the seller (tracker entry).
- Poshmark: since Oct 19, 2026, sellers pay the full $50 from their earnings when USPS flags a package (tracker entry).
Platform rules that apply to watches
Whatnot: 0% commission above $1,500
“Whatnot charges 0% base commission on the portion of a sale above 1,500” (Whatnot, as checked Oct 14, 2026), and “Sellers will still be charged the payment processing fee for the full transaction value”. An $8,000 watch pays $352.30 in Whatnot fees instead of $872.30.
Mercari: authentication and price limits
Watches are one of Mercari Authenticate's categories: “When you list a handbag, wallet, jewelry, watch, glasses, or pair of shoes over $100, authentication is completely optional unless you list over the required Authentication dollar amount for that category and brand of item” (Mercari). “We charge a flat $5 for each designer item you submit for authentication” (Mercari), and “Jewelry and watches are not eligible for a certificate” (Mercari). “When you purchase or list on Mercari, there's usually a $2,000 price limit” (Mercari); “When you want to list or purchase items verified with Authenticate at up to $5,000, we'll ask you to complete an additional identity verification”. An $8,000 watch can't be listed there.
Posh Authenticate
“Only select luxury items sold for $500 or higher qualify for Posh Authenticate. All categories qualify, except for Electronics, Home, Pets, Toys, and Games” (Poshmark). “Posh Authenticate is a free service for qualifying orders for both sellers and buyers” (Poshmark), and “Authenticating usually takes 1-3 business days once the item arrives at Poshmark” (Poshmark).
TikTok Shop and Etsy
TikTok Shop's Pre-Owned Watches rate is 5% of item plus buyer-paid shipping: $75.00 on $1,500. Etsy takes vintage watches only, “handpicked items that are over 20 years old” (Etsy, as checked Oct 14, 2026).
Packing a watch
From USPS's packaging standards (DMM 601.3) and its packing steps (USPS: How to send a package):
- Wrap the watch so the crystal and case can't rub: USPS doesn't pay claims for “Damage by abrasion, scarring, or scraping to articles not properly wrapped for protection” (DMM 609.4.3).
- “Package contents so they do not shift within the mailing container” (DMM 601.3.1.1).
- With a lithium cell inside: “Batteries installed in equipment must be protected from damage and short circuit” (Publication 52, 349.221(f)).
- Registered Mail over $5,000 has its own packaging rules: no padded or plastic mailers, and seals of glue or paper or cloth tape (see the insurance notes).
- “Use enough 2-inch-wide packing tape to close and secure all seams” (USPS).
Edge cases
Whatnot's line sits at $1,500 exactly
Whatnot's 0% commission (its help page as checked Oct 14, 2026) covers only the part above $1,500, so a $1,500 watch pays the usual $163.80. At $3,000 it's $207.30 instead of $327.30.
Above $5,000: Registered Mail
Regular USPS insurance ends at $5,000. Registered Mail includes insurance up to $50,000: $49.80 on an $8,000 watch, on top of postage, handed to a Post Office employee.
Box and papers
Commercial Ground Advantage charges one price under 1 lb, so a watch alone in a padded mailer and a boxed watch under 1 lb both cost $7.33 to $8.95. At exactly 1 lb it's $8.01 to $11.22; double-boxed with box and papers up to 2 lb, $8.39 to $13.42.
A used watch to an APO address or abroad
Pub 52's international rules are stricter. Used, damaged or defective electronic devices with lithium batteries “are prohibited and may not be mailed internationally or to, from, or between APO, FPO, or DPO locations under any circumstances” (Publication 52, 622.5). A used quartz watch on a lithium cell fits that definition, so it can't go to an APO, FPO or DPO address or overseas with its cell in. A new one can go with the battery installed, where the destination country or APO/FPO/DPO ZIP Code doesn't bar it, and “Mailpieces must not display markings or labels identifying the contents as lithium batteries” (Publication 52, 622.5).
If an insured watch is lost
USPS pays only with proof of value: “Either the mailer or the addressee must submit acceptable proof to establish the cost or value of the article at the time it was mailed” (DMM 609.3.2). USPS's examples include “A sales receipt, paid invoice or bill of sale, or statement of value from a reputable dealer”, and, for a sale paid through an online payment account, a printout showing buyer, seller, price, date and item (DMM 609.3.2). File a lost-package claim no sooner than 15 days and no later than 60 days after mailing (DMM 609.1.4).
Signature and the battery rule
“combining multiple extra services (e.g., signature confirmation and insurance less than or equal to $500) is prohibited when mailing hazardous materials” (Publication 52, 323.2). A watch with a lithium cell counts, so on a declared package insured for $500 or less, pick insurance or Signature Confirmation, not both. Over $500 insured, the signature comes with the insurance.
Questions
Can I mail a watch in a padded envelope?
A quartz watch with its coin cell installed, yes: “The use of padded and poly bags as outer packaging is permitted only when the mailpieces contain button cell batteries” (Publication 52, Packaging Instruction 9D), when the cell is installed and protected by the watch (Packaging Instruction 9D). A smartwatch needs a rigid box: “Mailpieces containing lithium batteries must be packaged in rigid outer packaging unless excepted under 339.4” (Publication 52, 349.221(c)). Either way, wrap it: USPS doesn't pay claims for “Damage by abrasion, scarring, or scraping to articles not properly wrapped for protection” (DMM 609.4.3).
Can I ship a used watch overseas or to an APO address?
Not with a lithium cell inside: used devices with lithium batteries “are prohibited and may not be mailed internationally or to, from, or between APO, FPO, or DPO locations under any circumstances” (Publication 52, 622.5). A mechanical or automatic watch has no battery, so the battery rules don't apply to it.
Can I ship a watch with the battery in it?
Yes. A coin cell installed in the watch needs no lithium battery mark: “Mailpieces containing button-cell batteries installed in equipment (including circuit boards) or no more than four lithium cells or two lithium batteries installed in the equipment they operate are excepted” (Publication 52, 349.221(d)). If the cell is lithium and the watch is used, Pub 52's used-device rule applies: ground only, with the two marks on the address side.
How do I ship a watch worth more than $5,000?
By Registered Mail: “Postal insurance is included in the fee for articles with a value of at least $0.01 up to a maximum insured value of $50,000.00” (DMM 503.2.1.1). On an $8,000 watch the fee is $49.80, and you “present Registered Mail items for mailing to a Postal employee” (USPS).
Can I sell an $8,000 watch on Mercari?
No: “When you purchase or list on Mercari, there's usually a $2,000 price limit” (Mercari), and items verified with Mercari Authenticate can go up to $5,000 after an identity check.
Does Poshmark authenticate watches?
For select luxury items sold for $500 or more: “Posh Authenticate is a free service for qualifying orders for both sellers and buyers” (Poshmark). Electronics are excluded, so a smartwatch listed under Electronics doesn't qualify.
What does an $8,000 watch cost to sell on each app?
Before shipping: TikTok Shop $400.00 (Pre-Owned Watches), Whatnot $352.30, eBay $587.90, Poshmark $1,600.00 and, for a watch over 20 years old, Etsy $760.45. Mercari can't take it: its limit is $2,000, or $5,000 for an item verified with Mercari Authenticate (Mercari).

Poshmark stops covering USPS's $50 hazmat fee: sellers pay it all from Oct 19
Poshmark paid all of USPS's $50 hazmat noncompliance fee through July 31, 2026, then charged sellers $5 for each flagged package from August 1. From October 19, 2026, sellers pay the full $50 from their earnings if USPS flags their package. Poshmark says the usual trigger is an old hazmat label on a reused box, including the small 'Limited Quantity' diamond.

Mercari splits USPS's $50 hazmat fee: sellers pay $25
Since July 12, 2026, USPS has charged a $50 HAZMAT Noncompliance Fee on commercial packages when it detects hazardous materials that weren't declared and labeled. Mercari's help page describes it as the fee USPS charges when a non-hazardous item ships in a box that still shows a HAZMAT label. For Mercari packages postmarked from September 1, 2026, Mercari pays $25 and takes $25 from the seller's earnings; earlier packages are exempt from the seller share. To avoid it, remove or fully black out old hazmat labels.

USPS adds a $50 fee for undeclared hazmat; platforms warn that old labels on reused boxes trigger it
Since July 12, 2026, USPS charges a $50 HAZMAT Noncompliance Fee on commercial-price competitive packages (Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, Ground Advantage, Parcel Select and others) when it detects hazardous materials that weren't declared and labeled. Poshmark says the most common cause is reusing a box that still has old hazmat labels or markings, and Mercari tells sellers to remove or fully black out old hazmat labels on reused boxes. Notice 123 doesn't list the fee for Media Mail or for retail counter prices.

A penalty, not a per-sale fee: $50 for each flagged commercial-label package. Mercari pays $25 of it (since Sept 1), and Poshmark pays none from Oct 19. eBay's notice on the July 12 USPS changes, which covers eBay Labels, says a $50.00 fee will be charged for every Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express and Ground Advantage package that doesn't meet USPS hazmat requirements, and tells sellers to remove or cover old markings on reused packaging (per the saved copy of Oct 14, 2026).

Etsy Purchase Protection now pays up to $250 on any eligible order
For cases opened from May 7, 2026, Etsy Purchase Protection pays up to $250 of the refund on an eligible order, even if the order total is higher, and the seller is charged the rest. Etsy suggests buying shipping insurance for orders over $250. To qualify, you must ship within your processing time with valid tracking or an Etsy label and reply to the buyer's Help request within 48 hours. A damaged item is covered only the first time it happens in a calendar year.

A rule, not a fee. On an eligible order over $250 that ends in a refund, you pay everything above $250 unless you have insurance.
