What it costs to sell and ship a vintage T-shirt

On a $40 vintage tee, Depop takes $1.77 (no selling fee, just processing), TikTok Shop $2.00, Mercari $4.00, eBay $5.84 and Poshmark $8.00, before shipping. A tee in a poly mailer up to 8 oz ships by Ground Advantage for $7.33 to $8.95 at USPS commercial prices (Zones 1-8); clothing can't go by Media Mail.

For mailer sizes and Ground Advantage Cubic prices, see the cheapest way to ship clothes. This page covers fees at $15, $40, $100 and $350, Etsy's vintage rule and the cases that come up with rare tees.

Here the buyer pays the commercial Ground Advantage price for 8 oz to Zone 4 and all of it goes on the label. eBay, Mercari, Etsy, Amazon and TikTok Shop take their percentage from buyer-paid shipping too, and Whatnot's and Depop's processing fees cover it; Poshmark buyers pay Poshmark's own label instead.

  • $100: with buyer-paid shipping, Depop leaves $95.99 and Poshmark $80.00, a gap of $15.99.
  • $350: with buyer-paid shipping, Depop leaves $337.74 and Poshmark $280.00, a gap of $57.74.
  • eBay: Clothing isn't on eBay's list of categories with their own rate (only athletic shoes and women's bags are, within Clothing, Shoes & Accessories), so a tee pays the most-categories rate (eBay fee page; details on eBay fees for clothing).
  • TikTok Shop: TikTok Shop lists Pre-Owned Menswear and Pre-Owned Womenswear at 5% (TikTok Shop Academy).
  • Etsy: “Reselling is not allowed on Etsy except for the following items that are handpicked or sourced by sellers” (Etsy, as checked Oct 14, 2026), and vintage means “handpicked items that are over 20 years old”. A vintage tee made in the last 20 years can't be resold there, so the Etsy row applies to vintage pieces only.
  • Amazon isn't in the table: this site tracks Amazon's media fees only. Amazon's pricing page lists Clothing and Accessories at 5% at a total sales price of $15 or less, 10% over $15 up to $20 and 17% over $20, with a $0.30 minimum (Amazon, saved copy Oct 14, 2026), and “A product's fee category may not be the same as the category that appears to customers in the Amazon store”. Whether a used vintage tee can be listed there depends on Amazon's own condition and category rules, which this page doesn't cover.
  • eBay's rule for this category word for word, the price where its rate changes, and a worked example with shipping and sales tax are on eBay fees for clothing; this page covers the other platforms and the shipping.
  • eBay also charges its percentage on sales tax, which the tables leave out: eBay fees on sales tax.
  • Whatnot's commission falls at higher four-week sales tiers; the tables use the standard tier, 8% in every category except Coins (Whatnot's fee page as checked Oct 14, 2026).
  • § Depop, Etsy and Whatnot: the rates, and the Depop, Etsy and Whatnot rules quoted on this page, are from each platform's own help pages as checked Oct 14, 2026. Those help centers block automated checks, so we couldn't re-check them for this update; confirm on the platform before you price around them. Etsy, Inc.'s annual report for 2025 gives the same $0.20 listing fee and 6.5% transaction fee on item plus shipping (Form 10-K, filed Feb 19, 2026). On Depop's selling fee, the same report says “In 2024, Depop removed seller transaction fees for sellers based in the U.K. and the U.S.” (Etsy, Inc. Form 10-K); the 3.3% + $0.45 processing fee is from Depop's page. Since then “Etsy completed the previously announced sale of Depop to eBay Inc.” on July 30, 2026 (Etsy, Inc. Form 8-K, filed Jul 30, 2026), so Depop's own fee page is the one that counts.

Shipping a vintage T-shirt: USPS prices by weight

Media Mail is limited by what's inside, not by size: “Only these items may be mailed at the Media Mail prices” (DMM 173.4.1). The list is books, 16 mm films, printed music, test materials, sound and video recordings, playscripts and manuscripts, printed educational charts, medical loose-leaf pages and computer-readable media. Anything else pays parcel prices, and “If you try to include anything that's not allowed, you (or your recipient) will have to pay higher postage rates” (USPS). USPS can check: “the mailing of articles at Media Mail or Library Mail prices constitutes consent by the mailer to postal inspection of the contents” (DMM 173.2.2).

That leaves USPS Ground Advantage as the tracked option: packages up to 70 lb, with USPS Tracking and up to $100 of insurance included (USPS).

Clothing isn't on that list.

USPS Notice 123 effective Oct 4, 2026. Each weight is "not over". Commercial prices are USPS's published prices for labels bought online; retail is the Post Office counter. Platform labels

A label bought through a selling platform follows that platform's price list. These are the label prices on our change tracker for the platforms above, from each platform's own page; each note says when that page was checked if it wasn't re-checked for this update.

  • Whatnot. Since Jul 31, 2026, Whatnot's default label is Ground Advantage: $4.47 under 4 oz, $4.85 under 8 oz, $5.25 under 12 oz, $6.75 under 16 oz, and $7.75 for 1-5 lb at any distance (Whatnot's help page as checked Oct 14, 2026; tracker entry). Over that, Whatnot says “Packages over 5 lbs use zone-based Ground Advantage commercial pricing” (Whatnot, as checked Oct 14, 2026), and it warns: “Using Priority Mail or Flat Rate packaging with Ground Advantage labels may result in returned packages and USPS fees of approximately $20 per package”. Buyers usually pay Whatnot shipping.
  • Mercari. Since Oct 19, 2026, Best-rate Ground Advantage labels cost $7.99 at 1 lb (was $7.48) and $13.99 at 3 lb (was $12.83). Packages over 1 cu ft or longer than 22 in. pay Standard rates: 1 lb goes from $7.59 to $8.99 (tracker entry).
  • Poshmark. Buyers pay for Poshmark's standard label, which covers packages up to 5 lb. Heavier packages need an upgrade that you pay: $5.00 for 5.01-10 lb and $10.00 for 10.01-15 lb. From Oct 26, 2026, Poshmark deducts the upgrade even if you ship on the standard label (Poshmark; tracker entry). Every package on this page is 5 lb or less.
  • eBay Labels and other label services use their own prices; this page uses USPS's published prices so every platform is compared on the same postage.

Insurance and signature on a vintage T-shirt

“Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, and USPS Ground Advantage include $100.00 of insurance coverage” (DMM 503, Exhibit 1.4.1); Media Mail isn't on that list and includes none. Beyond that, “additional insurance may be purchased for no more than a maximum coverage of $5,000.00” (DMM 503.4.2), and “Insurance coverage only covers the actual value of mail contents” (USPS). “Insurance fees are based on the item's declared value” (USPS). “An item insured for more than $500.00 receives a delivery scan ... and USPS provides a signature as the delivery record to the mailer electronically” (DMM 503.4.3.1). Under that, Signature Confirmation costs $4.15 online or $5.15 at the counter (Notice 123).

USPS insurance fees for insuring the full sale price, Notice 123 effective Oct 4, 2026 (fee for the coverage amount; $2.80 for up to $50, then by band; $9.05 plus $1.50 per $100 over $600). Registered Mail is a separate service that includes insurance up to $50,000.
Declared value Ground Advantage insurance fee Registered Mail fee Delivery signature
$15 included (up to $100) $21.50 Signature Confirmation, $4.15 online
$40 included (up to $100) $21.50 Signature Confirmation, $4.15 online
$100 included (up to $100) $21.50 Signature Confirmation, $4.15 online
$350 $6.05 $25.00 Signature Confirmation, $4.15 online
  • Insured for more than $500, the buyer “may be required to show an acceptable primary ID before USPS will deliver the mailpiece” (USPS).
  • Etsy: for cases opened from May 7, 2026, Purchase Protection pays up to $250 of an eligible order's refund and the seller is charged the rest; Etsy suggests shipping insurance for orders over $250 (Etsy's help page as checked Oct 14, 2026; tracker entry).

Platform rules that apply to vintage T-shirts

Etsy: the age counts, not the word in the title

“Reselling is not allowed on Etsy except for the following items that are handpicked or sourced by sellers” (Etsy, as checked Oct 14, 2026), and vintage means “handpicked items that are over 20 years old”. A recent reprint of an old tour design isn't vintage there; sold in October 2026, a tee has to be made before October 2006. A qualifying $100 tee pays $9.95 on Etsy before shipping.

Poshmark's $15 line

Poshmark charges $2.95 flat under $15 and 20% from $15. A $14 tee pays $2.95 and keeps $11.05; a $15 tee pays $3.00 and keeps $12.00. Buyers pay for Poshmark's label.

Depop: processing only

“In 2024, Depop removed seller transaction fees for sellers based in the U.K. and the U.S.” (Etsy, Inc. Form 10-K for 2025). What Depop does charge, per its own fee page (see the § note under the tables): 3.3% + $0.45 payment processing on the item, shipping and tax, and 12% on sales Depop credits to an optional Boosted Listing. A $40 tee with $7.86 of shipping pays $2.03.

TikTok Shop: 5% for pre-owned clothing

TikTok Shop lists Pre-Owned Menswear and Womenswear at 5% (TikTok Shop Academy), and “The Referral Fee calculation base includes the shipping fee paid by the customer” (TikTok Shop Academy). A $100 tee pays $5.00; listed outside Pre-Owned at 6% it would be $6.00.

Packing a vintage T-shirt

From USPS's packaging standards (DMM 601.3) and its packing steps (USPS: How to send a package):

  1. A poly mailer is fine for a tee. DMM 601.3.9 covers soft goods: “Boxes containing soft goods (e.g., textiles, clothing, linens, or draperies) weighing up to 5 pounds must be filled to capacity” (DMM 601.3.9), and “Shrinkwrapping is not acceptable as the only packaging” (DMM 601.3.9).
  2. Fold it flat so the mailer doesn't bulge: USPS says to “use packaging that doesn't bulge and is strong enough to protect what you're sending” (USPS).
  3. Reusing a mailer or box? USPS says to “make sure all old logos, barcodes, shipping labels, and addresses are covered or blacked out” (USPS).
  4. Seal it fully: “Use enough 2-inch-wide packing tape to close and secure all seams” (USPS).

Edge cases

A tee as a large envelope

A folded tee in a flat envelope looks like a large envelope, but a flat must be “Not more than 15 inches long, or more than 12 inches high, or more than 3/4 inch thick” (DMM 101.2.1), and also “uniformly thick so that any bumps, protrusions, or other irregularities do not cause more than 1/4-inch variance in thickness” (DMM 101.2.4). A tee folded thicker than that is “considered parcels and must pay the applicable parcel prices” (DMM 101.2.5).

Poly mailers and Cubic pricing

Notice 123 has a second commercial Ground Advantage table, Cubic, priced by the package's size tier instead of its weight (Notice 123). Under 1 lb, the weight price is lower in every zone: Cubic's smallest tier starts above it. A bundle over 1 lb in a small poly mailer can come out lower at Cubic prices. Sizes, tiers and prices: the cheapest way to ship clothes.

Bundles add nothing until 1 lb

Under 1 lb, commercial Ground Advantage charges one price: $7.33 to $8.95 for a tee up to 8 oz and the same for two or three up to 15.999 oz. At 1 lb it's $8.01 to $11.22, and at 2 lb $8.39 to $13.42.

A $350 tee and insurance

Ground Advantage covers $100. Full-value insurance on $350 costs $6.05 (Notice 123), and “Insurance coverage only covers the actual value of mail contents” (USPS).

Questions

$2.95 on a sale under $15, 20% from $15: $3.00 on a $15 tee, $8.00 on $40 and $20.00 on $100. Buyers pay for Poshmark's label.

Can I sell vintage band tees on Etsy?

Yes, if they're over 20 years old: Etsy allows reselling only for a few kinds of items, including “handpicked items that are over 20 years old” (Etsy, as checked Oct 14, 2026). Newer tees and reprints aren't allowed.

How much does it cost to ship a T-shirt?

One tee in a poly mailer up to 8 oz: $7.33 to $8.95 by commercial Ground Advantage (Zones 1-8), $8.40 to $10.20 at the Post Office. Under 1 lb that weight price is lower than any Cubic price; for a bundle over 1 lb, compare Cubic in the cheapest way to ship clothes.

Can a T-shirt go by Media Mail?

No: “Only these items may be mailed at the Media Mail prices” (DMM 173.4.1), and the list is books, recordings and a few printed items (DMM 173.4.1). Clothing pays Ground Advantage or First-Class prices.
