What it costs to sell and ship a designer handbag

On a $1,200 bag, eBay takes $180.40 (15% for women's bags up to $2,000), Poshmark $240.00, Mercari $120.00, Whatnot $131.10 and TikTok Shop $60.00 for a pre-owned bag, before shipping. Shipping is small next to that: a 3 lb boxed bag costs $9.04 to $16.30 by Ground Advantage at USPS commercial prices (Zones 1-8), and insuring $1,200 adds $18.05.

Three things move the numbers: eBay's women's-bag rate falls to 9% of the whole total above $2,000 (eBay fees for handbags works through that line), Poshmark sends select luxury bags sold for $500 or more through Posh Authenticate, and Mercari caps most listings at $2,000. Below: fees at $150, $500, $1,200 and $2,500, insurance and what USPS needs to pay a claim, and box-size postage.

Here the buyer pays the commercial Ground Advantage price for 3 lb to Zone 4 and all of it goes on the label. eBay, Mercari, Etsy, Amazon and TikTok Shop take their percentage from buyer-paid shipping too, and Whatnot's and Depop's processing fees cover it; Poshmark buyers pay Poshmark's own label instead.

eBay: eBay's rate covers “Clothing, Shoes & Accessories > Women > Women's Bags & Handbags” (eBay fee page); a men's bag pays the most-categories rate.
Whatnot: Bags & Accessories is on Whatnot's list for 0% commission above $1,500: “Starting at 12:00am EST on June 4th, 2026, Whatnot extended this promotion to include individual orders in Bags & Accessories and Jewelry & Watches” (Whatnot, as checked Oct 14, 2026).
TikTok Shop: TikTok Shop lists Pre-Owned Bags at 5% (TikTok Shop Academy).
Etsy: “Reselling is not allowed on Etsy except for the following items that are handpicked or sourced by sellers” (Etsy, as checked Oct 14, 2026), and vintage means “handpicked items that are over 20 years old”. A designer bag made in the last 20 years can't be resold there, so the Etsy row applies to vintage pieces only.
Amazon isn't in the table: this site tracks Amazon's media fees only. Amazon's pricing page lists Backpacks, Handbags, and Luggage at 15% with a $0.30 minimum (Amazon, saved copy Oct 14, 2026), and “A product's fee category may not be the same as the category that appears to customers in the Amazon store”. Whether a used designer bag can be listed there depends on Amazon's own condition and category rules, which this page doesn't cover.
eBay's rule for this category word for word, the price where its rate changes, and a worked example with shipping and sales tax are on eBay fees for handbags; this page covers the other platforms and the shipping.
eBay also charges its percentage on sales tax, which the tables leave out: eBay fees on sales tax.
Whatnot's commission falls at higher four-week sales tiers; the tables use the standard tier, 8% in every category except Coins (Whatnot's fee page as checked Oct 14, 2026).
§ Depop, Whatnot and Etsy: the rates, and the Depop, Whatnot and Etsy rules quoted on this page, are from each platform's own help pages as checked Oct 14, 2026. Those help centers block automated checks, so we couldn't re-check them for this update; confirm on the platform before you price around them. Etsy, Inc.'s annual report for 2025 gives the same $0.20 listing fee and 6.5% transaction fee on item plus shipping (Form 10-K, filed Feb 19, 2026). On Depop's selling fee, the same report says “In 2024, Depop removed seller transaction fees for sellers based in the U.K. and the U.S.” (Etsy, Inc. Form 10-K); the 3.3% + $0.45 processing fee is from Depop's page. Since then “Etsy completed the previously announced sale of Depop to eBay Inc.” on July 30, 2026 (Etsy, Inc. Form 8-K, filed Jul 30, 2026), so Depop's own fee page is the one that counts.

Shipping a designer handbag: USPS prices by weight

Media Mail is limited by what's inside, not by size: “Only these items may be mailed at the Media Mail prices” (DMM 173.4.1). The list is books, 16 mm films, printed music, test materials, sound and video recordings, playscripts and manuscripts, printed educational charts, medical loose-leaf pages and computer-readable media. Anything else pays parcel prices, and “If you try to include anything that's not allowed, you (or your recipient) will have to pay higher postage rates” (USPS). USPS can check: “the mailing of articles at Media Mail or Library Mail prices constitutes consent by the mailer to postal inspection of the contents” (DMM 173.2.2).

That leaves USPS Ground Advantage as the tracked option: packages up to 70 lb, with USPS Tracking and up to $100 of insurance included (USPS).

Bags aren't on that list.

USPS Notice 123 effective Oct 4, 2026. Each weight is "not over". Commercial prices are USPS's published prices for labels bought online; retail is the Post Office counter. When the box costs more than the designer bag

For Ground Advantage, a parcel “exceeding 1 cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches) is based on the actual weight or the dimensional weight ... whichever is greater” (DMM 283.1.4). USPS rounds each side up to a whole inch, multiplies them, and if the result is over 1,728 cubic inches, says to “divide the result by 139 and round up ... to the next whole number to determine the dimensional weight in pounds”.

Example: a 3 lb bag in an 18 x 14 x 8 in. box. 18 x 14 x 8 = 2,016 cubic inches, so it bills as 15 lb instead of 3 lb. At commercial prices that's $16.28 instead of $9.04 to Zone 1, $18.72 instead of $10.07 to Zone 4, $34.66 instead of $16.30 to Zone 8. A box cut down to fit, or a smaller carton, can get under 1 cubic foot: 1,728 cubic inches is 12 x 12 x 12 in.

Platform labels

A label bought through a selling platform follows that platform's price list. These are the label prices on our change tracker for the platforms above, from each platform's own page; each note says when that page was checked if it wasn't re-checked for this update.

Whatnot. Since Jul 31, 2026, Whatnot's default label is Ground Advantage: $4.47 under 4 oz, $4.85 under 8 oz, $5.25 under 12 oz, $6.75 under 16 oz, and $7.75 for 1-5 lb at any distance (Whatnot's help page as checked Oct 14, 2026; tracker entry). Over that, Whatnot says “Packages over 5 lbs use zone-based Ground Advantage commercial pricing” (Whatnot, as checked Oct 14, 2026), and it warns: “Using Priority Mail or Flat Rate packaging with Ground Advantage labels may result in returned packages and USPS fees of approximately $20 per package”. Buyers usually pay Whatnot shipping.
Mercari. Since Oct 19, 2026, Best-rate Ground Advantage labels cost $7.99 at 1 lb (was $7.48) and $13.99 at 3 lb (was $12.83). Packages over 1 cu ft or longer than 22 in. pay Standard rates: 1 lb goes from $7.59 to $8.99 (tracker entry).
Poshmark. Buyers pay for Poshmark's standard label, which covers packages up to 5 lb. Heavier packages need an upgrade that you pay: $5.00 for 5.01-10 lb and $10.00 for 10.01-15 lb. From Oct 26, 2026, Poshmark deducts the upgrade even if you ship on the standard label (Poshmark; tracker entry). Every package on this page is 5 lb or less.
eBay Labels and other label services use their own prices; this page uses USPS's published prices so every platform is compared on the same postage.

Insurance and signature on a designer handbag

“Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, and USPS Ground Advantage include $100.00 of insurance coverage” (DMM 503, Exhibit 1.4.1); Media Mail isn't on that list and includes none. Beyond that, “additional insurance may be purchased for no more than a maximum coverage of $5,000.00” (DMM 503.4.2), and “Insurance coverage only covers the actual value of mail contents” (USPS). “Insurance fees are based on the item's declared value” (USPS). “An item insured for more than $500.00 receives a delivery scan ... and USPS provides a signature as the delivery record to the mailer electronically” (DMM 503.4.3.1). Under that, Signature Confirmation costs $4.15 online or $5.15 at the counter (Notice 123).

USPS insurance fees for insuring the full sale price, Notice 123 effective Oct 4, 2026 (fee for the coverage amount; $2.80 for up to $50, then by band; $9.05 plus $1.50 per $100 over $600). Registered Mail is a separate service that includes insurance up to $50,000.

Insured for more than $500, the buyer “may be required to show an acceptable primary ID before USPS will deliver the mailpiece” (USPS).
Etsy: for cases opened from May 7, 2026, Purchase Protection pays up to $250 of an eligible order's refund and the seller is charged the rest; Etsy suggests shipping insurance for orders over $250 (Etsy's help page as checked Oct 14, 2026; tracker entry).

Platform rules that apply to designer handbags

Posh Authenticate from $500

“Only select luxury items sold for $500 or higher qualify for Posh Authenticate. All categories qualify, except for Electronics, Home, Pets, Toys, and Games” (Poshmark). “Posh Authenticate is a free service for qualifying orders for both sellers and buyers” (Poshmark). The order goes to Poshmark first, and “Authenticating usually takes 1-3 business days once the item arrives at Poshmark” (Poshmark). If Poshmark can't verify the bag, “the order is cancelled and a full refund will be immediately processed. The item will then be returned to the seller and it won't be eligible to be relisted”.

Mercari Authenticate and the $2,000 limit

“When you list a handbag, wallet, jewelry, watch, glasses, or pair of shoes over $100, authentication is completely optional unless you list over the required Authentication dollar amount for that category and brand of item” (Mercari). “We charge a flat $5 for each designer item you submit for authentication” (Mercari), and “You can pay $10 for your very own certificate of authenticity” (Mercari). “While items are pending review, they will not be live on the Mercari marketplace and will not appear in the search results” (Mercari). On price: “When you purchase or list on Mercari, there's usually a $2,000 price limit” (Mercari), and “When you want to list or purchase items verified with Authenticate at up to $5,000, we'll ask you to complete an additional identity verification” (Mercari). The $2,500 column is only possible with an authenticated bag and that identity check.

Whatnot: 0% commission above $1,500

“Whatnot charges 0% base commission on the portion of a sale above 1,500” (Whatnot, as checked Oct 14, 2026), and “Sellers will still be charged the payment processing fee for the full transaction value”. A $2,500 bag pays $192.80 in Whatnot fees instead of $272.80; Whatnot calls it a limited-time promotion.

TikTok Shop and Depop

TikTok Shop's Pre-Owned Bags rate is 5% of item plus buyer-paid shipping: $125.00 on a $2,500 bag. Depop charges no selling fee in the US, only 3.3% + $0.45 processing on item, shipping and tax (Depop's fee page as checked Oct 14, 2026): $82.95.

Packing a designer handbag

From USPS's packaging standards (DMM 601.3) and its packing steps (USPS: How to send a package):

Box it: “Mailers must package mailpieces to withstand normal transit and handling without breakage or deterioration of content” (DMM 601.3.1.1). Stuff the bag so it keeps its shape and put it in its dust bag.
“Package contents so they do not shift within the mailing container” (DMM 601.3.1.1).
Right-size the box: a parcel should be “Sized based on the contents (rightsized) to maintain integrity during processing” (DMM 601.3.1.2). A box over 1 cubic foot bills by size (example above).
Wrap hardware and leather: USPS doesn't pay claims for “Damage by abrasion, scarring, or scraping to articles not properly wrapped for protection” (DMM 609.4.3).
Don't use a free Priority Mail box with a Ground Advantage label: “if you use a Priority Mail box, you have to pay for Priority Mail service” (USPS).

Edge cases

If an insured bag is lost or damaged

Insurance pays only with proof of what the bag was worth: “Either the mailer or the addressee must submit acceptable proof to establish the cost or value of the article at the time it was mailed” (DMM 609.3.2). USPS's examples start with “A sales receipt, paid invoice or bill of sale, or statement of value from a reputable dealer”, and “For Internet transactions conducted through a Web-based payment network that offers payment services through a stored value account”, it asks you to “provide a computer printout of the online transaction identifying the purchaser and seller, price paid, date of transaction, description of item purchased” (DMM 609.3.2), so save the order page. For damage, “the addressee must retain the mailing container, including any damaged articles, all packaging, and any contents received” (DMM 609.2.0), and “customers should file a claim immediately but must file no later than 60 days from the date of mailing” (DMM 609.1.4).

A box that bills by size

The 18 x 14 x 8 in. box above bills as 15 lb: $18.72 to Zone 4 instead of $10.07. A 16 x 12 x 8 in. box (1,536 cubic inches) pays by weight.

Insurance, signature and ID over $500

“An item insured for more than $500.00 receives a delivery scan ... and USPS provides a signature as the delivery record to the mailer electronically” (DMM 503.4.3.1), and the recipient “may be required to show an acceptable primary ID before USPS will deliver the mailpiece” (USPS). Coverage tops out at $5,000; insuring $2,500 costs $37.55 (Notice 123).

Men's bags on eBay and TikTok Shop

eBay's bag rate covers “Clothing, Shoes & Accessories > Women > Women's Bags & Handbags” only, so a men's bag pays 13.6% plus the per-order fee: $163.60 on $1,200, against $180.40 for a women's bag. TikTok Shop's 5% Pre-Owned Bags row has no men's or women's split (TikTok Shop Academy).

From October 26, 2026, if you ship a package over 5 lb on the standard label without upgrading it, Poshmark takes the upgrade cost from your earnings. Poshmark used to absorb this cost. The upgrade is $5.00 for 5.01-10 lb and $10.00 for 10.01-15 lb. A package over 15 lb on one label costs $15.00 at 15.01-25 lb, or the full USPS price over 25 lb.

Temporary prices on Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, Ground Advantage and Parcel Select until 12 a.m. CT on Jan 17, 2027. A 0-3 lb Ground Advantage parcel costs $0.40 more at commercial prices in Zones 1-4 ($0.55 in Zones 5-9) and $0.50 more at retail ($0.75). Heavier parcels rise more, up to $7.70 at commercial prices ($7.50 retail) for 26-70 lb to Zones 5-9. Media Mail and First-Class Mail are not affected.

USPS dimensional weight now divides by 139, not 166, and rounds sides up

Since July 12, 2026, Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, Ground Advantage and Parcel Select boxes over 1,728 cubic inches (1 cubic foot) are billed at the greater of actual weight or dimensional weight, and dimensional weight is now length x width x height divided by 139 instead of 166. Each side is also rounded up to the next whole inch instead of to the nearest inch. A 16 x 12 x 12 in. box now bills as 17 lb instead of 14 lb.

Etsy Policy Effective May 7, 2026

Etsy Purchase Protection now pays up to $250 on any eligible order

For cases opened from May 7, 2026, Etsy Purchase Protection pays up to $250 of the refund on an eligible order, even if the order total is higher, and the seller is charged the rest. Etsy suggests buying shipping insurance for orders over $250. To qualify, you must ship within your processing time with valid tracking or an Etsy label and reply to the buyer's Help request within 48 hours. A damaged item is covered only the first time it happens in a calendar year.

Depop: 12% boosting fee for new US listings from March 23, 2026

For new US and UK listings from March 23, 2026, Depop's Boosted Listings fee is 12% of the item price (plus shipping if you arrange your own). It applies only when a buyer interacted with the boosted listing and bought within 28 days. Australia is 8%. Depop's page doesn't say which rate applies to listings created before then. US sellers still pay no Depop selling fee; processing is 3.3% + $0.45.
